Things this monumentally stupid do not fill me with hope for the future of our species. I don't know which is worse, the argument itself or the expectation it might actually be believed. I live in Texas. Greg Abbott and his fellow Republicans never stop pandering to the religious right, while viewing human decency as a character flaw. It's all theater with Abbott. One stunt after another, with cruelty being the only point, and all of it served up with his big sloppy smile.

You're too kind to our 'dear' governor. I'd like to treat him the way he treats trans kids, specifically, but as he treats those he considers 'undesirables' in general.

"It’s even more disturbing that they’re citing the Old Testament."

I’ve long been astonished that Christians can claim with a straight face that, yes, the Yahweh of the Old Testament was a petty, vengeful, murderous jerk, but that everything was set right by Jesus (according to the fanfic of his most devoted followers, known as the New Testament). But that’s got it exactly backwards.

Sure, if you did something that pïssed off the easily irritated Yahweh, he’d smite you where you stood, plus your family and half the innocent bystanders in the surrounding county as collateral damage. But that was it. Dead. Done. Finito. Period. Game Over. Sayonara. Hasta la vista. It wasn’t until Jesus came along that they invented the concept of “No no no, my friend, we’re gonna fry your sorry äss FOREVER! And not just for the actions you actually performed but for some of those naughty little THOTS you’ve been having!”

Think about it. Which of these 2 arrogant, flaming sadists was actually worse?

A divine being who could will the universe into existence, couldn't come up with a better way to deal with the mistake he had to know he was making when he made it, than drowning nearly everyone on earth. This man is a monster. The people of this country need to hold him accountable. Not just Texans, the entire country. He’s a genocidal maniac parading as a patriot. He’s disgusting.

And he was just re-elected last year. The majority of voters in this state like the cruelty.

Expand full comment

I’m not so sure, there is a great deal of GOP election shenanigans involved in Texas politics. Not the least of which is gerrymandering.

There is too large a population there that do like the cruelty though.

But like I said, the rest of the country are affected by this and do not abide his actions.

Expand full comment

Gerrymandering doesn't affect state-wide elections. It's strictly majority voters. There may be a large percentage of people who don't like the cruelty, but they don't care enough to go to the polls. So, no gerrymandering doesn't explain Abbot, Patrick, Paxton, Cruz and Cornyn. The voters *wanted* them.

Expand full comment

Voter purges and modern poll taxes (voter ID laws) and many other tactics do. Voter apathy is an element, but more and more it’s disenfranchisement.

I wonder if the Republicans are working against themselves with some of these stunts. I'm thinking particularly about my own home state of Ohio and what happened with Issue One there. They thought they could slide something in on the Q.T., with no one noticing ... except that this is the age of the internet and the 24-hour news cycle, and EVERYONE noticed. They wound up with over three million people voting in an irregular and off-year election ON ONE ISSUE, and they got their asses handed to them with a 14-point defeat of their precious issue.

What used to work back when may not work as well now ... and indeed, it may not work again, at least not for a while.

Expand full comment

They complained that there shouldn’t be August elections and tried to eliminate them, until they decided that they wanted to sneak an issue past voters in an August election.

GOP policy is wildly unpopular with all demographics and yet they still push it, finding any way to get it passed, legal or illegal, rather than adjusting the policies.

Scarier still will be the day they figure out that if they change their policies to get elected then change them once they’re in and fix the government so that they remain in power, just like the Nazis did in the 40s.

Expand full comment

More they tried it after it failed spectacularly in Kansas.

I'm not sure voter ID laws make that big a difference. I find it hard to believe there are that many citizens or resident aliens who don't have IDs or can't get the free one offered by the Election boards. I don't doubt there are some, and they should be allowed to vote, but I'm not convinced there are enough of them to affect the outcome of an election. At least one of the same IDs is required to get even a McJob or government assistance.

As to voter purges, I've gotten into the habit of double-checking my registration before every election and I vote in most if not all elections, so they have no excuse to purge me.

There may be states where the margins are close enough that these tactics make a difference, but I don't believe Texas is one of them. 52% for Trump in 2020. It wasn't even close.

Expand full comment

Okay, you convinced me, the people in Texas are all shitty fucking people bent on genocide.

Still, I’ll be Pollyanna and not act that way.

Anyway the USA is not a majority Republican and aren’t supportive of this. Folks who know it’s happening are appalled by it and speak out and the rest are ignorant of the situation because it’s not being reported. And none of us deserve public servants like Abbott no matter where they’re getting elected.

Expand full comment

If you already have a drivers license its fine. But many elderly and disabled people don't have one. 20% of voters in their teens and twenties don't have one. If you want an official ID you need a birth certificate to apply. When I got one it cost me $30. Then you need to go to the dmv on a weekday and wait in line for hours. In TX, the nearest DMV can be as far as 170 miles away. When I lived in New Hampshire, the nearest one was 35 miles away. So if you want an id and don't have a license, you have to take a day out of work and pay for transportation to get something you'll almost never use.

It doesn’t matter though. The GOP and the religious right bathe in hypocrisy and are never harmed by it being pointed out. The rubes that follow them are willing to make excuses for every single instance of hypocrisy. It’s not a lie if it’s for Jesus. God is allowed to murder people because god is good, or god created us he can kill us as he pleases. Trump says what I think, and I think it’s okay to dehumanize vilify and destroy someone I don’t like. If there’s a hypocrisy there’s an excuse.

It never ceases to amaze me how the modern Christian power machine just doesn't care when something they do causes death, but claims to have cornered the market on 'family values'. Clearly, that last bit must not have ever meant what I thought it did; I'm just glad I got out.
