Big-time kudos and congrats to the founders of the Genders and Sexualities Alliance ... and an equally sized Bronx Cheer to the parents and faculty who were trying to stop them.

We're talking about kids who are discovering their sexuality here. In multiple cases, that discovery may be of something that doesn't fall inside Β±3 Sigma, and in an environment that generally expect conformance, that can be damned hard. To be able to get together with others of one's own age and be able to discuss experiences and feelings in an accepting group would, to my mind, be hugely beneficial. Meanwhile, the grownups are worrying about ORGIES???

One has to ask: just who here is the more adult?

When Christian Nazionalists buy goalposts, they get them factory equipped with wheels. Their actual goal here was to erase LGBTQ kids, and every time the kids proved unerasable, they tried something else to erase them.

What you have here are parents who sure as hell seem to be afraid of their own children, of their maturity and their desire to understand exactly who it is that they are. As I suggested elsewhere, the kids are behaving better than those who are supposed to be their help and guidance.

Which is one hell of a note.

Age appropriateness? My mother told me she knew I was gay by the age of 4... Did I really choose that early. I surely don't remember doing so. I grew up in 60s and 70s KY... nobody ever explained 'gayness' to me. There are differences in brain architecture between gays, trans, and straights visible on MRI and PET scans. Part of the conservative madness is their ability to deny that anything they disapprove of has any legitimacy or relevance.

They're also afraid of π—¦π—˜π—«. My own parents barely scratched the surface with the Baby Boomer typing here, and one would HOPE that the sexual revolution would have done at least a little bit to take the shame and the hesitance out of the topic.

Yet it's 70+ years later, and apparently, sex discussions are still a problem. It's like we've gone NOWHERE in all that time.

It's not surprising that we have gone nowhere. After all, the fundies have been doing their damndest to pull us backwards.

3) Losing the Civil War

SeekingReason's avatar

Really happy to hear these results. The school board should be disbanded. Imagine trying to make middle school children feel bad about themselves!! The β€œage-appropriateness” takes the cake. Yet they allowed Fellowship of Christian Athletes. If anything, religious divisive groups like that should be banned. They should play sports for their churches if they want religious associated sports. On top of that, those beliefs are based on fairytales. Inappropriate!

I would not be surprised if the kids have to restart the application process, and I would also bet that the district will try to go around any protections the kids have by dragging out the approval for at least the remainder of the school year. Possibly a summer reassignment of the faculty sponsor so the club has to start again after that.

Stephen's avatar

There is a lot to be enraged about here, but what I find most appalling is that the faculty member who originally agreed to sponsor the club was doxxed and called a groomer. Kudos to the kids and the parents who stood up to this discrimination and faux outrage.

NOGODZ20's avatar

They want groomers? They need look no further than public school classrooms where prayer, 10 Commandments imagery, etc. are being pushed.

Stephen's avatar

If they fear that a teacher is a groomer for sponsoring a club for kids, but ignore what is happening in churches, youth sports and online on TikTok and Roblox then they are a special kind of stupid.

Boreal's avatar

You just know this school board is full of 'god fearin christians' who 'love their neighbors*'.

*neighbors must be straight, white, christian nationalists.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Pretty obvious when Christian kids wanted to form a club and were told they couldn’t because of the rule changes, those very same goalpost-moving board members tried to get THEM in.

Colleen Corrigan-Watson's avatar

Congratulations to those students/tweens/young adults for standing strong and knowing their rights !!! Maybe I’m mistaken, but I believe middle school might be the most appropriate age group for this alliance to exist in as that’s when kids are going through puberty, dealing with bullies, and figuring out just who the hell there are 🀷🏻

They keep using those terms β€œage-appropriateness,” β€œparental transparency,” & β€œdevelopmentally ready.”

I don’t think they mean what the KGSB think they do.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

They're trying to relegate young, becoming adults back into childhood, I suspect because they're not prepared to face the questions they are asking, never mind provide intelligent answers!

Richard S. Russell's avatar

I'm reminded of the now-adults who were students at schools that got shot up by crazy people who went on, while still quite young, to be national leaders in the movement to infuse some sanity into our gun laws. Perhaps some of these kids from King George will also turn into the same kind of leaders; they sure showed their mettle, dedication, and organizational skills in this one.

Bensnewlogin's avatar

On my 1st cup, I got an appointment that I gotta leave for shortly, and now I have to deal with more assholes. Not my dear tribe here, not the kids at the school, but THOSE PEOPLE!!!!

Here is what stuck in my mind immediately: β€œ That became an issue when a β€œFellowship of Christian Athletes” club tried to form but couldn’t because of the new rules, and yet the administrators attempted to justify approval of the FCA by saying it was about leadership, which would make it β€œcurricular.” (Bullshit.)

They wanted to make the GSA into an orgy club, but the kids weren’t having it. Because in fact, kids that get together and decide that their lives are every bit as valuable as straight kids’ lives are demonstrating a very particular quality which we will call…

…. Wait for it!..

LEADERSHIP!!!!

They are learning to stand up in world that tells them to sit down and shut up. That’s called leadership. They are organizing and demanding the right to be themselves in the world that wants them to sit down, shut up, and be someone elseβ€” OR ELSE!!! that is also called leadership. They are speaking up when the alleged the adults in the room are acting like children, lying about them, who they are, and what they.

What would we call that? My guess is… LEADERSHIP!!!

A few days ago, I was slumming at HUFFPOST and one of the school board members, his cousin, or his twin, or is sister motherβ€” I wasn’t really very clear about the relationshipβ€” was busy putting down gay people amd their courage in standing up to this garbage. Here is the conversation;

β€œPoor Kevin. Poor poor Kevin. Thank you for illustrating exactly what I was talking about.

What are you terrified of, Kevin?

Get over myself? What is there to get over, Kevin? Have I claimed that I am a better man than you are? I don’t think so. I mean I am, but I haven’t said so. Have I called heterosexuals inferior? I know I didn’t.

So what are you afraid of, Kevin?

I’ll tell you something, Kevin. Two things actually. One I already said: it takes a great deal of courage to be yourself in a world that tells you to be someone else. Especially when your world that tells you that they will do everything they can to destroy you For the crime of being different.

And the other one, poor persecuted Kevin?

It takes far more courage for a man to walk down the street Holding the hand of the man he loves than it takes to be a member of the group of thugs that want to beat the crap out of them or murder them for doing it.

Something to think about, Kevin.

So this club at the school is very much about courage, leadership, and honesty.

Maybe the school board members can join the club and learn something about it from the kids.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

LEADERSHIP?!? EEEEK! Next thing you know, the kids will be talking about [ohmygoodness!] SELF-OWNERSHIP and AGENCY!

Whatever shall the parents do THEN??? 😱
