Phenomenal. Whatever Micah Young and Sandi Walker thought to accomplish with their surreptitious actions of bringing not just an uncleared film crew but one whose politics were questionable at best, all they managed to do was to force themselves to update their respective resumes. I'm not even certain that, if the crew had been neutral, the result would have been any different. Seriously, why even attempt to bring a film or video team to a school WITHOUT THE SCHOOL'S APPROVAL?!? All this demonstrates to me is that Young and Walker are either utterly daft and without even a scintilla of discriminatory facilities or they are so full of themselves that they thought, "Oh, it's for JEEEZUS, so it's okay."

If the hubris were any thicker, you could swim in it.

oraxx's avatar

Slap the word Christian on something, and it's instantly okay with these folks.

NOGODZ20's avatar

When it should be just the opposite.

oraxx's avatar

Indeed, but if these were rational people we wouldn't be dealing with the problem.

Bagen Onuts's avatar

Does religion cause irrationality? Or does irrationality pedispose one to religion?

My very Mormon visiting nurse was here and he prattled on about some new Kennedy conspiracy book. Is he religious because? Or does religion create this obsession with conspiracy theories?

Grant Jackson's avatar

I think it is time in our lives for us to get very blunt and in these people's faces. We need to ask whether they believe this shit and if they say they do we need to tell them how fucking ignorant they are.

oraxx's avatar

Good question. In any event it is a symbiotic relationship.

Harry M's avatar

I used to use a mobile vet who was a Mormon. She was a good person, and clearly educated, but occasionally she would say crazy things. And after a while, she'd kind of catch herself, as if she was aware that what she was saying was nuts, and say something to the effect that she didn't understand it, but it was in the book of Mormon, so they must have been on to *something* or else it wouldn't have been written there. Kind of the same "if there is smoke there is fire" reasoning that people apply to things like the pyramids when speculating about ancient Egyptians and engineering chops. It was a great example of just how good the brainwashing was. She was an intelligent, otherwise rational person. The brainwashing provided the bucket of "extra-rationality" she could put things into in order to avoid the conflict of knowing she was spouting B.S.

Zorginipsoundsor's avatar

Or is it a vicious circle, with one amplifying the other?

Grant Jackson's avatar

Well it's not like there are any dangerous activities happening in schools to where we need to worry about strangers coming into the schools and harming the students-right?

Grant Jackson's avatar

lBut they got some points on jeebus' scoreboard and that's all that matters to evangelical idiots.

oraxx's avatar

Maybe it's going to take raising proselytizing in the public schools to a criminal offense to keep the preachers out of the public schools, paid for with everyone's tax dollars. They will scream bloody murder about how they're being persecuted, but they will do that anyway so let them. These are the people who would go out of their tiny little minds at the mere suggestion some non-Christian group might be allowed to talk to their children.

Bagen Onuts's avatar

That is not really unusual. If I had a dollar for every time some religionut wished me dead for being Gay I would have a new Mercedes. AND a mansion bigger than osteen's shack.

Len Koz's avatar

The problem is that all of Jesus' various followers think what they would do IS what Jesus would do.

And the contradictory messages in their book really doesn't contradict that mindset.

Rickey Woody's avatar

True to point. I will, however, point to the difference of the actual teachings and then those in the Epistles as the real problem.

Len Koz's avatar

Which ones are the actual teachings and which ones are stuff people made up later?

Jarred Harris's avatar

Perhaps rather than books, we should start banning Christians from schools for the safety of students.

Unbelievable. Well, maybe not, as these deluded evangelicals will break every rule, trample on procedures and engage in deceptive practices at will. That film crew didn't have permission to film the students; it's standard procedure to get signed releases from anyone being filmed. When my wife and a film partner were shooting a documentary in Afghanistan and Iraq, that's what they did. This mess makes me wonder if there isn't a lawsuit coming down soon.

oraxx's avatar

True believers have never had a problem justifying their behavior, no matter how awful. It certainly isn't limited to Christianity.

Bagen Onuts's avatar

Though their godthing certainly is insecure enough to tell them to break laws in its name, then claim they are "persecuted" when they get arrested.

Harry M's avatar

I live pretty close by to there (~50 miles). Keller ISD was also one of the only school districts in TX to vote to allow chaplains into the school in place of real counselors.

oraxx's avatar

I'm in the neighborhood as well. Even members of the clergy were opposed to Abbott's plan to bring chaplains into the public schools. They were at least smart enough to realize they're not remotely qualified to fill the role of a school counselor.

RegularJoe's avatar

I suspected the community leaned that way. Not solidly, as the perps did act surreptitiously, but enough so that they thought they'd get away with it, then an insincere asking for forgiveness was all they felt they should put out.

...if it wasn't for you meddling kids (and parents)!

Harry M's avatar

It's red, but not bright red. Voter registration is 55-44 in favor of the republicans, and Tarrant county, to which is belongs, went D by a small margin last elections. But that's TX - it's a purple state where the far right has a death grip on the leadership positions. This school board is a microcosm of that.

RegularJoe's avatar

Iowa is like that, too.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

The entire country is like that.

RegularJoe's avatar

Well, there are Blue states.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

Yeah, and they’re really purple too, it’s just the GOP hasn’t been able to cheat in them yet.

OT sort of, I saw a bumper sticker at the clinic today that said “I’m not rich enough to vote Republican”. I thought it was clever, but I’d add I’m not stupid enough to it.

Zorginipsoundsor's avatar

What surprises me about the narrative is the fact that there is robust pushback, ... in Texas

ericc's avatar

I chalk that up to sectarian conflict more than secularism. IOW the Board member and film crew were some different sect than most of the parents, and the parents are upset at the attempt at poaching, rather than being upset at the idea of religion in school.

Of course, "upset at the attempt at poaching" is probably how the 1st amendment's religious clauses got started, so even if my cynicism is correct, that sort of response is at least secularism-adjacent.

SeekingReason's avatar

When we get a more representative Congress, or perhaps I should say if, we must stop ignoring the abhorrent danger of subsidizing religion! It is based on a made up fantasy of pre-science men. Religion must NEVER be given tax money from the government! Looking the other way for decades on end is no longer acceptable. The explosion of people saying they do not have religion is showing what a mighty group we are. We need to come together and be sure to put open atheists and those supporting separation of State/church in office! Even many progressive politicians are spewing religious talk from their offices, attending absurd government or public business, or school prayer sessions! These Substack writings are very important. Join religion free groups or start one! Look into FFRF.org. (Over 40,000 members!) They fight our legal battles.

I am thankful that I can still get honest news.

Read this story and thought of the following about the Dutch righties:

"For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as the apostles of Christ."

-- 2 Corinthians 11:13

also...

"The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful; they fail to act wisely or do good."

-- Psalms 36:3

and...

"No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in my presence."

-- Psalms 101:7

One last one...

"For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people."

-- Romans 16:18

Got that, EO? Your own holy book condemns your tactics.

A commandment that appears nowhere in the "real" Ten Commandments found in Exodus 34 and actually called the 10 Commandments in Verse 28. The set most people think of are found in Exodus 20. Not only are they never called the 10 Commandments, they were smashed and broken by Moses. Never used.
