These people can talk about their loving Jesus and the glorious after life from now on, but it's power and control over people on this earthly plane they value most. I hope she wins, and is awarded a hefty judgment as well.
Just one of several TAX-FREE hate groups proclaimig their hatreds are holy because they clauim some goddy thing told them Well, Oingo says kkkristers, muzies and jews are hate groups and they will end up in Oingo's hell for their hatreds.
I’m sure Jeebus is quite proud of the school given how often he called out the gays in the Bible. Evangelical xtianity has gone through a phase transition where they no longer respect the teachings of their savior. I’m sure they will be rewriting their Bible with the teachings of rethuglican Jeebus.
Both Jesus and the Bible are nothing, if not flexible. The staggering number of Christian sects should be a bigger problem for believers than it is. It speaks to a divine being who supposedly willed the universe into existence, but when it came to the most important message imaginable, couldn't make himself understood.
Good question. Here are some more questions. Why did he choose a backwater of the Roman Empire rather than a towering civilization like China? Why did his messenger fail to write anything down, and only manage to tell a handful of illiterate peasants about the message? Why is it no contemporary historian noticed Jesus?
You mean because he really wasn’t there at all? There is speculation in the Mythicist community that the Jerusalem Church was founded 100 years before the time of Jeebus (the reign of Pontius Pilate). That would account for how there could be so very many different sects of xtianity running about so early. Paul was inveighing against false preachers and ‘Christ mongers’ in his epistles written in the 40s and 50s. All those ‘gospels’ excluded from the canon were evidence of too many non-orthodox sects.
The 'mysterious ways' bit isn't an explanation, it's an excuse used by apologists to explain their God's countless failures. 'Divine inspiration' is another excuse they use to try to explain away the near total lack of objective evidence supporting Christianity.
The first Amendment does not apply to private institutions, which this school is. They have a legal right to prohibit certain speech as long as they don’t run afoul of any particular federal, state or local laws.
Ok. I hear what you're saying that the school can enact rules to limit free speech. But would that apply in this case, given that the speech occurred not on school grounds, not on school-owned or school-provided devices and not on a school-administered forum.
You seem to know about this (I am neither a lawyer nor American), could you please comment as regards what rights the school has in this situation?
Yes, I’m a lawyer. The school has a legal right to proscribe, limit, prohibit, etc. certain kinds of speech (in this case, that which they deem offensive or disparaging to their school or students) on or off campus.
In general, as a private organization (school) they can require students to conform in just about any manner they choose, again, as long as they don’t run afoul of any laws, like, for example, anti-discrimination laws, and as long as what they require or prohibit is not “unconscionable” (unconscionable provisions in a contract are not enforceable).
I haven’t read this particular lawsuit, but it seems that their cause of action (what they’re suing for) is breach of contract.
There's something which I find a bit troubling, you write 'the school has a legal right to [...] limit [...] speech [...] on or off campus'. Surely there are limits to that? Surely there are limits as to what extent a school can govern private conduct or speech OFF campus?
To explain - I am European. And for the last few decades the ECHR (European Convention of Human Rights) has provided strong protections. To my mind this just smacks of egregious overreach by the school.
Well, it’s a private school so what they can or can’t do is only limited by the contract between the school and the parents. In that contract, the students are required to abide by the rules and policies of the school. If they don’t like those rules and policies, they can go to public school or another private school.
As far as I know the only limitation on what they can require of the students are the normal limitations on contracts in general: Criminal behavior, things against public policy, unconscionable requirements (those that severely favor one side or the other), and provisions which violate state or federal law.
Slander? Really? First of all, she never mentioned the school when calling out the bigots for their hate. Second, it isn't slander if it's true. If the school thinks the anti-bigotry posts are directed at them, them they are openly admitting to be hateful bigots.
This school is threatening this child’s future! Why? Her sexual preference? She dared to mention the bigotry of her trump supporting acquaintances? That’s all folks. This radical cabal of self righteous religious zealots want to have total control of our nation, government. It has never been about true Christianity (does true Christianity still exist), only power and control. Powered by ignorance. Russell Vought and the Heritage Foundation, J D Vance and his Tech Bros espousing their new found Opus Dei religion are working day and night to implement this theocratic form of government. They are pandering to the modern day Catholics and Protestants to pave their way. They have stated the Protestants would be used as the foot soldiers to get the vote to bring their theocratic government to power. Hence the worship of trump as their savior. Hence the ignorance of the religious zealots falling in line with Russell Vought, J D Vance, Tech Bros and the billionaire class. But will there be a place at their table for the foot soldiers? I think not.
YESSSSSS! Too few people are able to wrap their heads around what's really going on, but you summarized it spectacularly! Thank You! The billionaires ar laughing all the way to the bank while the jebus lovers are worrying about transgender people and woke ideology. We are in very real danger!
It's always helpful when the 'ruthless trump supporting "jesus" mfs' self identify. In this case, they're not only petty enough to prevent Morgan from attending graduation and receiving her diploma, but they're also threatening to do reputational damage to her going forward. That sounds pretty ruthless and mf'y to me.
I do have to give Morgan props for putting "jesus" in quotes. She's clearly pointing out the phoniness of people who hide their bigotry behind their religion. And right on cue, her "christian" school proves her correct.
I hope she wins her lawsuit and forces the 'ruthless trump supporting "jesus" mfs' at her "christian" school to pay through the nose. Best of luck to Morgan. Stay true to yourself!
Is anyone, except at a Christian college, in a college admissions board not going to see this for the petty revenge for being visible and gay that it is.
Strikes me as petty, mean-spirited, and entirely out of proportion to a statement not even directed at them - until they stood up and ID'd themselves. It wasn't enough to deny Morgan the chance to take her finals, graduate with her class and receive her diploma, they've vowed to trash talk her to any college she applies to. All on a the basis of a private social media post.
Sounds like the definition of 'ruthless and mf'y' in my dictionary.
"... also i’m kinda scared about the facebook comments bc i have some ruthless trump supporting ‘jesus’ mfs on there.”
The school administrators overstepped their boundaries because this was about people on facebook, not about school. That's why the administrators proved that they were also ruthless trump supporting ‘jesus’ mfs.
She also didn't call anyone out by name, or accuse anyone of anything specific, so there'd be no credible claim of slander or libel here even if she 𝘸𝘢𝘴 talking about the school.
This is why it's always worth it to push back against bullies. I identify as a follower of Christ but I am no longer affiliated with any church, because of the culture of bullying that is pervasive in U.S. Christianity. It will be interesting to watch how this "Christian" school defends its bullying of someone who Christ would surely have identified as a vulnerable person.
I stand with the Armstrong family. Also, good for them for defending their daughter. No matter what happens with the school, she will never forget their fierce loving action to protect her.
This is beyond transparent- the school officials are only using this other bullshit as a smokescreen so they don't have to say what their actual motives are. Anyone with two functioning brain cells and a synapse to fire between them could tell that she's on their shitlist for being gay (and also likely for kissing and holding hands in public, because that's probably tantamount to publishing a sex tape to these puritanical weirdos).
Good on Morgan's parents for having her back, though! I was dreading that part, because it far too often goes very differently in these kinds of stories, and it's good to be pleasantly surprised sometimes. I hope they've learned their lesson about sending their child to Christian schools, though. Send that young lady to a 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 college, please!
OK, so I just woke up a little while ago, I’m on my 1st cup of coffee, and I may not be entirely clear.
First, I’ve been a gay rights activist, as most of you know, for longer than 50 years. I suspect I’ve been at it longer than Morgan‘s parents have been alive. Second, I am 100% of in support of Morgan’s right to live her life as she sees fit, and therefore, ofwhat Morgan and her family are doing. We gay people have been standing up to this bigotry for decades, going back to the late 1880s and John Addington Symonds. That’s the only way to deal with it. Stand up to it, because if you don’t, the mofos are absolutely certain that their God agrees with their assholery, and so will continue with it. This story demonstrates that clearly.
The first “problem” I note— this is intended as no blame to Morgan or her family— is “social media”. Everyone puts everything online for all the world to see. And then they are surprised that people see it. This is the modern equivalent of living in a small town where everyone is up into everyone’s business. Everybody knows your business, and all it takes is one person to make it difficult for you. One of the reasons I left Honolulu 50 years ago was because despite it being the largest city in between Los Angeles and Australia, it was still a very small town mentality, and everyone was up into everyone else’s business. I suspect that was one of the reasons my teaching contract was not renewed, although no one said so. It was impossible that people not know that I was gay, and this was 50 years ago. And this is why I got rid of my Facebook account some years ago, not that I used it for much. I had already been doxxed once, and not through Facebook.
The second thing I see here is the absolute obsession of Christian fundamentalists with anything even remotely homosexual in nature. This is not a new observation, of course. We all know it, because we are outside the bubble looking in. But I suspect that it’s very difficult for those on the inside of that obsession to see exactly how obsessed they are with the subject, far more so than they are obsessed with anything heterosexual in nature— and they are plenty obsessed with that.
We must frighten them very badly.
But why is that? One easy answer is that this is a very ancient, vicious, and durable prejudice, one that has “informed”— yet ironically, the opposite of being truly informed— western civilization, such as it is, for nearly 2000 years. It is so deeply ingrained in our culture that fathers are afraid to kiss their sons lest someone get the wrong idea— or the right one. It is so deeply ingrained that virtually everything they think their Lord and Savior has to say on the subject of sin is canceled by the very existence of gay people. It is so deeply ingrained that conservative religion is infested with homo hating homos, desperate to deflect attention from themselves, desperate to appear heterosexual even though they are not and are never going to be.
And desperate to inflict whatever harm they can on gay people, especially those within their own ranks, who dare to expose the fear and the lies that are at the very bottom of all bigotry. part of it, of course, is simply fear of exposure. But part of it is a defense mechanism, defending themselves against something that they know that is true about themselves, just as they know that they cannot change it.
And this is why we frighten them so very much, both the homo hating homo that infest organized religion and society, and the people who may not be homo hating homos, but nevertheless spend so much of their time and energy obsessed with gay people, whatever they imagine our sex lives to be, and their entirely self obsessed thinking that God actually endorses their completely imaginary fears.
We stand as a refutation of everything that they are desperate to believe about sex, gender, their God, what he wants of people, and his message to the world. This scares the crap out of them, because if they are wrong about this, what else are they wrong about?
All of that just strengthens my view of love, life and sex - I'll just mind my own business about what adult and consenting people get up to. That's it. I'll reserve my anger for situations where participants are not adult/consenting.
Agreed. I believe they are life-hating or life-denying people. They hate to see other people with any sort of joy living their lives as their true authentic selves. It’s powerful to live freely and they are oh so weak. Time to form the herd and retrieve the sense of power they feel that they have lost. Also, if they have no one to hate, how will we sort out who the chosen ones are when the time comes? Desperate, pathetic, waste of what could have been a great life.
The majority of those who watch gay porn live in the bible belt. I suspect people who are openly gay cause them to feel shame over their viewing habits (or books they read or personal thoughts) and they lash out.
This sort of issue is one of the major reasons I want religion out of education and medicine both. If we're being brutally honest here, the school is trying to define behavior for the rest of Morgan's life here, not just these few years at while she's a school. Considering just how aggressive the school is being over this, it's pretty clear to me they ARE the sort of Trump supporters Morgan mentioned in her post. If that weren't bad enough, the school may well be able to get away with it right now, thanks to a court system that isn't doing its job the way it should.
Doubtless many Christians would stand up here and claim 'that isn't what Christianity is about!' but the reality is that so few other Christians would stand up for Morgan or another LGBTQ+ person, that yes, this sort of bigotry is exactly what Christianity is about. If nobody ever does anything to stop it, then that tacit endorsement is the official position.
I have a 20-something trans son. So far I have not had to do anything like Morgan’s parents have. And I hope my son is never put into a situation like this. But my son knows my bride and I have his back.
There’s a Barney Miller episode where Barney says “Millions for defense. Not one cent for tribute.” (Or something close to that.) That’s my motto!
Anytime I see people post and says xtians are NALT, I SMFH. This is exactly what xtianity has always been like. It was used to justify the oppression of women, to support slavery, the genocide of native peoples, the burning of women accused of made up crimes, the inquisition, the crusades and on and on.
Oppression is the norm for xtianity, not the exception. Religion of love it is not.
I’m rooting for Morgan to win her lawsuit and move on with her life. I hope it’s rich and fulfilling. Can’t say the same for the “friend” that leaked her private message.
These people can talk about their loving Jesus and the glorious after life from now on, but it's power and control over people on this earthly plane they value most. I hope she wins, and is awarded a hefty judgment as well.
Let's not kid ourselves. Most of these people would happily give up their 'afterlife' for the chance to stick it to somebody in the here and now.
Absolutely. If you want to see what genuine persecution looks like . . . hand power to the preachers.
Just one of several TAX-FREE hate groups proclaimig their hatreds are holy because they clauim some goddy thing told them Well, Oingo says kkkristers, muzies and jews are hate groups and they will end up in Oingo's hell for their hatreds.

How come Jeebus doesn’t just put it into everyone’s head correctly so they wouldn’t risk Hell by holding their butts slightly wrong?
Good question. Here are some more questions. Why did he choose a backwater of the Roman Empire rather than a towering civilization like China? Why did his messenger fail to write anything down, and only manage to tell a handful of illiterate peasants about the message? Why is it no contemporary historian noticed Jesus?

He prefers his "mysterious ways." I guess that makes it sound more goddish or something.
The 'mysterious ways' bit isn't an explanation, it's an excuse used by apologists to explain their God's countless failures. 'Divine inspiration' is another excuse they use to try to explain away the near total lack of objective evidence supporting Christianity.

It's important to note, that even if she had non-disparaged bigots or disparaged non-bigots, she would have been entirely within her rights to do so.
First amendment and all that.
Or is it a case 'free speech for me but not for thee'?
The first Amendment does not apply to private institutions, which this school is. They have a legal right to prohibit certain speech as long as they don’t run afoul of any particular federal, state or local laws.
And we have the freedom to criticize and call out the school for its treatment of this student.
Freedom of speech is not only applies to MAGAS (although they think that civil liberties and human rights only apply to them) but to everyone.
Of course.

WAY too few, WAY too quiet. It is blanket encouragement of bigotry in the name of a jesus claiming unconditional love.*

Great parents, she has.
People, refusing to support their kids in such a situation are not worth to be honored with the title "parents".
Ms Armstrong's parents are supporting her. They get that honor.
Just take a look at what the Conquistadors and the convert-or-die missionaries did in the "New" World.
But jesus loved all those people his followers committed genocide against.

Stolen. BUT I upvotted it first cuz I got manners and shit. 8^)
You don't have to lie, we're all depraved here, ask any religionist.
So true.
I’m rooting for Morgan to win her lawsuit and move on with her life. I hope it’s rich and fulfilling. Can’t say the same for the “friend” that leaked her private message.
