When the Congressional Freethought Caucus first premiered, I wrote all my congresspeople about it. Predictably, the ONLY rep who wrote me back was Sherrod Brown, and obviously, he is not yet a member.
larry parker is wrong. The second name I searched for is married. I havenot searched the rest. One is enough to conclude that larry parker made a statement without knowlegde about the topic.
Of course, we've known for a long, long time that “The most formidable weapon against errors of every kind is reason. I have never used any other, and I trust I never shall.”
—Thomas Paine (1737-1809) American revolutionary, pamphleteer, and atheist, "The Age of Reason" (1794)
More members? Terrific, especially Swallwell, who has been a gadfly on clueless Republicans since I first became aware of him. I wasn't aware that he was initially problematic about Church / State issues, but it's good to know he's gotten past that.
Welcome, Representatives Balint and Swallwell! We're glad you're on board!
Good for them. We need all the help we can get, and really, it's about time the US congress openly recognizes the need for reason-based decision making.
"Florida may be exactly right about the nature of the ideas it targets," Grant wrote. "Or it may not. Either way, the merits of these views will be decided in the clanging marketplace of ideas rather than a codebook or a courtroom."
Grant's opinion was joined by U.S. Circuit Judges Andrew Brasher and Charles Wilson. Grant and Brasher are appointees of Republican former President Donald Trump, while Wilson was appointed by Democratic former President Bill Clinton.
“By limiting its restrictions to a list of ideas designated as offensive, the act (the Florida law) targets speech based on its content,” said the opinion, written by Judge Britt Grant and joined by Judges Charles Wilson and Andrew Brasher. “And by barring only speech that endorses any of those ideas, it penalizes certain viewpoints — the greatest First Amendment sin.”
Hey conservashits ? Remember the law who allow employers to not cover contraception in insurance plans in the name of freedom of opinion ? How do you like it now ?
We need more news like this! We can only get back to the founders’ intention of a secular government if we have people like these two step forward. I am an admirer of E. Swallwell because of his straightforward grilling of the republicans. He calls out their hypocrisy with the best of them! And now this. 🥰🥰

Great news, but I’m a little disappointed in Swalwell. I didn’t know this about him (he was never my congressperson). That was a pretty cheap shot against Stark. Glad that he’s improved his stance.
OT: Re: today's Supreme Court decision: um, where exactly, does it say, in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment that ONLY Congress can enforce it, not a state's SOS?
Yes, most in this group still identify with a religious group or claim to have religious beliefs. I would suspect some are closet atheists given the vitriol they would receive to admit it. Yet happy to have allies in this battle against Christian nationalism. Here is a link to a faith-based group that is part of this fight as well...https://faithfulamerica.org/
Not a single Republican. Sigh.
You don't find alligators in a litter of puppies either and that's more likely.
It’s almost like Republicans don’t support free thought!
They're in the No Thought club. They meet every Sunday morning.
And running scared – don't forget their base.
Sadly, I wouldn't hold my breath about any rep with an (R) next to his or her name joining the Caucus, at least not for a while. [sigh]
I'm happy to see a Floridian on the list.
I'm surprised to see a Texan on the list. I'm debating saying something to my Rep.
When the Congressional Freethought Caucus first premiered, I wrote all my congresspeople about it. Predictably, the ONLY rep who wrote me back was Sherrod Brown, and obviously, he is not yet a member.
But at least he's responsive!
I hope he becomes one, maybe after his reelection
Hey, I beat you to this thought by an hour. How come you got 6 more likes than I did? :D
Not any married ones either. ; )
Really? — not having done even a smidgen of research.
larry parker is wrong. The second name I searched for is married. I havenot searched the rest. One is enough to conclude that larry parker made a statement without knowlegde about the topic.
Eric M Swalwell has ben married with Brittany Watts since 2016. I haven't looked up the others .. yet.
Not a surprise.
Not a single Republican on the list. Freethought? The GQP are too busy moving in lockstep...and marching backwards.
We want free thought... Republicans want to be free 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 thought.
Republicans would charge you to think if they could figure out a way to do it.
They'll charge you 𝑓𝑜𝑟 thinking.
Haven’t they already? “Here, buy this junk and you’ll be a lifetime member!!!!”
If you wait long enough it is going to happen.

What's this? 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 news? What was 𝘪𝘯 that shit I smoked last night?
And now back to our regularly-scheduled shitshow.
A chocolate tart from IKEA ?

Afghan and Saudi women are raped too. Do they show too much ankle ?

Well said.
Tempted to join them.
It's bad to restrain yourself so go ahead.
As time goes on this will become normal behavior and the need for a separate caucus will fade. Good to see this though, much needed.
Dammit, I keep reading Falwell for Swalwell. Which gives me false hope. :)

Good. Because we’re well behaved individuals.
Yes.

You have to read between the lines!

...oh, you thought I meant the lines of 𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵. I meant the lines of coke the Justices snorted off the Constitution before they made their ruling.
Amy Cokehead Barrett *smiles*
In the same part that allow injustices to lie about precedents before they swear their oaths ?
The worst part is that it was unanimous, I was holding out hope that the more moderate justices were trying to keep the institution in check, alas.
“Jerry Falwell’s God”
An amusing song.
