“None of us are that stupid” .... Then how do you explain believing in some mythical sky fairy watching over everything you do?

Expand full comment

Beyond the religion, the person is evidently "that stupid" in the sense of believing the teen artist is part of some vast anti-Christian cponspiracy instead of believing the teen artist drew symbols she thought were inclusive, but which the commenter does not.

“When adults pretend things that are like real life, it’s a mental illness,” says Danielle Beight. “We need counselors, we need medication that’s going to help bipolar disorder, fix their brains.”

I couldn't agree with you more Ms. Beight....

Oh, you were talking about the fact that LGBTQ people exist and not the made up bs about a sky daddy who impregnated a teenager to give birth to himself so he could 'sacrifice' himself and rise from the dead to sit in the kingdom of heaven. I think maybe you are the one that needs help dear.

They went full Goebbels.

Never go full Goebbels.

Expand full comment

These people are so objectively DUMB. Calling transgender people mentally ill and then saying they’re bipolar... clearly they have no idea what bipolar disorder is because it is completely unrelated to being transgender. It’s so frustrating - they say the stupidest things with absolute undeserved confidence.

All of this controversy over a child’s painting... it’s just so ridiculous.

Expand full comment

The sad fact is that most if not all the people who attack the LGBTQ+ community care little about the details of who we are. All they're interested in is a target to spew their venom at. They want someone they can be better than and dismiss and/or assail as they please.

They've taken what was originally perceived as a religion of love and turned it on its head.

Expand full comment

You can feel it, see it:

"Man, can't we all, you know, like, be nice to each other? Wouldn't that be, like, cool?"

"Dude, that's the greatest idea ever! We will proclaim you the Son of God and Good Teacher and go around the world spreading this idea... err... though... we don't really have to be nice to THESE people, do we? You know: THEM."

Expand full comment

That is one reason why I can't really hate believers. They have become twisted in their belief. If by some means they could become untwisted, obviously, things would be considerably different.

The trick of course is how to untwist them. No easy task.

Christian parents going after a child's mural.

How brave they are. They love punching down, don't they? Do they put this much energy into going after the child molesters of their clergy? Or are they too busy vilifying drag queens?

These folks are cracking ridiculous, everyday there’s another new demonic influence. The Lilith imagery in the KFC ad campaign makes eating the chicken a portal to your soul. Yoga Barbie, Hamsa Hand, this game character or that cartoon, or anything that doesn’t come from the Bible must be a demon. Ironically, the only place demons exist are in the Bible (and they’re imaginary just like the rest of it), claiming another person’s religious imagery is demonic, even if it is specifically a symbol of peace, is what’s divisive and hateful.

These folks are like the man-o-sphere with finding anything they can claim is either unmanly or “gay”. You see these morons claiming washing your ass or penis is gay because a man is touching a man’s asshole or penis. They’ve even claimed having sex with women is gay if she has any sort of “body count” because the sperm supposedly changes her DNA makes it more manly. And the Venn diagram of these two groups overlaps a great deal.

I just can’t with these people! How exhausting living like this must be. It’s certainly tiring trying to deal with them when they enter my life. Get a grip people, you don’t matter enough for Satan to care if you get to heaven.

All of this over a kid's picture (which I personally find charming and reflective of no small amount of talent). I suppose it's a fact that deluded people will find any evil thing they want to find if they try hard enough. As for modifying the pic, were I the artist, I'd take it down before ever yielding to such a demand. I couldn't draw anything that good if my life depended on it. The kid should be proud. As for the bent-out-of-shape parents? Well, there's still this:

It's no wonder all our houses are brown and all our cars are black, white or grey. I wouldn't have even noticed the colors on the shirts of the kids in the drawing if I wasn't trying to figure out what the bigots are going on about. I mean, it's bad enough that they are now afraid of rainbows* but now they can't have blue with lavender, tan with pink or even grey if it's paired with purple. Christ on a cracker people! At this point, I'm going to say that the real objection to this mural was simply that it doesn't appear to have had a Christian cross anywhere, so it wasn't Jesus-y enough. After all, if there's no Jesus, it must be Satanic, right? (eyeroll)

Don't even get me started on the way the alleged 'Christian adults' apparently made the teenage artist leave in tears. Christian love at its finest is worse than a case of rabies, seems like.

As for this being an example of why liberals so often think conservatives are just in it to inflict pain, well, I don't know if that's really the case or not. I know my parents would have had a fit at the accusation, and insisted it was about 'tough love' and making people better, but it's hard to argue that the result here isn't worse for the entire local community. They'd have also said these locals weren't very good Christians, but we all know No True Scotsman around here when it appears. Funny how so many conservative arguments fail when examined carefully, isn't it?

founding

Whitney, you have some good points, but I think the absence of a cross in the mural is not important to these folks. They don't want to be included in an inclusive community; they want to be supreme in a completely EXclusive community, one that has entirely eliminated all other religious viewpoints and all other social attitudes. They want absolute conformity to their ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

With respect, Whitney, it's not about presence/absence of the cross. It's about their goddamned vindictive political agenda. LGBT churches and LGBT-friendly churches all have crosses (along with all the other usual christian images), yet these people loathe them quite unanimously.

So what are their own children going to do, now? Just go without the services the health center provided, I guess. Must've seemed worth the sacrifice to them, but I can't see it. If they're too goddamned stupid to have figured out, after all that time, that being LGBT is part of nature, then they might at the very least have decided that their "omnipotent" god must be okay with it.
