I saw "A Haunting in Venice" this afternoon. The famed fictional detective Hercule Poirot, rationalist and atheist, must solve two seemingly impossible murders that appear to have supernatural trappings. I won't give anything away, but I found this far more satisfying than I ever would some film that purports to be a true story, yet is steeped in lies.

Would you say they Scooby Doo'd that shit?

To say anything would give away how it all shook out.

If you get the chance (and you're an Agatha Christie fan), see this one. It's a goody.

Scooby believed in ghosts. It was Velma who never did. I haven't seen her new show, but I wonder if it explains why she kept the others around.

Not in the first season, Fred is a spoiled mama's boy. Shaggy is level headed until the last episode. I'll give you the spoiler, if you want it.

As far as Fred. The ascot kinda gave that away. The thought of a level-headed Shaggy is out there. Was he sober for a change?

If I sign up for Max again (I want to, but the annual cost is a bit of sticker shock), I plan to watch it.

Totally agree! It was rational all the way to the end, when a lot of movies feel obliged to throw in a little sop to the woo crowd by suggesting that just MAYBE there was something spooky going on after all. Not this time!

The Pale Horse is another good book by Agatha Christie (it's a "standalone" book from her...no Poirot, Marple, etc.) that has some occult/supernatural elements to it.

Been a busy couple of days. Yesterday it was shopping and a VA appointment. Today it was to pick up two new books (one I wasn't expecting) as well as the movie.

Tomorrow, it's comics and more shopping. Friday sees another VA appointment. Never rains, but it pours.

Poirot atheist ? That must be from the screenwriters or director. In all the versions I saw he is catholic.

Not that it's not a good change.

Kenneth Branagh's Poirot eloquently gives his reasons for rejecting gods, ghosts and the supernatural. He has simply seen too much to ever make him believe in such nonsense.

(Branagh was also the film's director and co-producer)

“Hollywood always takes liberties with films “based on true stories,” and they routinely overlook facts in order to tell a more idealized tale.“

And the right wing takes liberties with the box office numbers to pretend their movies are more popular than they really are. Corporate donors buying out theaters to simultaneously brag about selling out packed theaters and complain there’s a conspiracy at the theaters keeping people from watching the movies. They’re bragging online it has beat all kinds of flicks box office, the same way their apologetics books make the best sellers lists. Individuals are not purchasing tickets or books, but churches and religious groups buy up the tickets/books in bulk to store away.

The lies regarding the box office lead me to believe there might be lies in the movie as well.
