I saw "A Haunting in Venice" this afternoon. The famed fictional detective Hercule Poirot, rationalist and atheist, must solve two seemingly impossible murders that appear to have supernatural trappings. I won't give anything away, but I found this far more satisfying than I ever would some film that purports to be a true story, yet is steeped in lies.
Totally agree! It was rational all the way to the end, when a lot of movies feel obliged to throw in a little sop to the woo crowd by suggesting that just MAYBE there was something spooky going on after all. Not this time!
The Pale Horse is another good book by Agatha Christie (it's a "standalone" book from her...no Poirot, Marple, etc.) that has some occult/supernatural elements to it.
Been a busy couple of days. Yesterday it was shopping and a VA appointment. Today it was to pick up two new books (one I wasn't expecting) as well as the movie.
Tomorrow, it's comics and more shopping. Friday sees another VA appointment. Never rains, but it pours.
Kenneth Branagh's Poirot eloquently gives his reasons for rejecting gods, ghosts and the supernatural. He has simply seen too much to ever make him believe in such nonsense.
(Branagh was also the film's director and co-producer)
I prefer Maigret, even though Simenon didn't have the best character. Particularly as played by Rowan Atkinson funnily enough. I thought he was the best out of the 3 that I've seen anyway.
A friend showed me an episode of Black Adder to try to get me into the show, 25-30 years ago. All I remember is that I thought it was absolutely abysmal.
I was struck by the fact he sent pictures in his underwear. Most sleezeballs won't wear that much when sexting (harassing) a woman. That's better, I guess?
Democrats using an elixer of youth? Have you seen Joe, Bernie and Diane? They look almost as bad as Pat Robertson did.
And of course he accuses his critics of pedophilia. Those are his enemies according to his legend, so of course anyone standing against the good fight, must be a pedophile.
As I have said before, this is getting boring in its frequency right? Seems to me if anyone is in the entertainment industry, and anyone who is a religious they should be treated with caution – as red flags for sexual abuse. Money and power just seem to turn guys into idiots.
“Hollywood always takes liberties with films “based on true stories,” and they routinely overlook facts in order to tell a more idealized tale.“
And the right wing takes liberties with the box office numbers to pretend their movies are more popular than they really are. Corporate donors buying out theaters to simultaneously brag about selling out packed theaters and complain there’s a conspiracy at the theaters keeping people from watching the movies. They’re bragging online it has beat all kinds of flicks box office, the same way their apologetics books make the best sellers lists. Individuals are not purchasing tickets or books, but churches and religious groups buy up the tickets/books in bulk to store away.
The lies regarding the box office lead me to believe there might be lies in the movie as well.
Well, unless she has kids. If she has kids, she should be able to work two jobs, care for them, and make enough money to provide housing, food, healthcare, and whatever else they need...
Meanwhile Florida is ranked 46th in Opportunity. Not a surprise, given the state's economic and historic inequities. Racial disparity in a part of the country that was built on slavery.
But DeSanitarium decides to go after drag shows. Nice set of priorities, eh?
He doesn't WANT to improve things for the citizens of the state. They exist for him to use as cannon fodder in his mad rush for the WH (Goddess forbid -- I'm sure Stephen King could get a decent novel out of that.)
That's only for KKKristian parents. Obviously, these two are in need of biblical guidance, so that negates their right to determine what's best for their child. /s

Would you say they Scooby Doo'd that shit?
To say anything would give away how it all shook out.
If you get the chance (and you're an Agatha Christie fan), see this one. It's a goody.
Waiting for it to arrive on streaming services.
Scooby believed in ghosts. It was Velma who never did. I haven't seen her new show, but I wonder if it explains why she kept the others around.
Not in the first season, Fred is a spoiled mama's boy. Shaggy is level headed until the last episode. I'll give you the spoiler, if you want it.
As far as Fred. The ascot kinda gave that away. The thought of a level-headed Shaggy is out there. Was he sober for a change?
If I sign up for Max again (I want to, but the annual cost is a bit of sticker shock), I plan to watch it.
Non-baked. How to Geek recommends rotating subscriptions on a monthly basis.

Sop to the Woo Crowd would be a cool band name. *smiles*
All hail the Manly Facial Hair!

So that's why you disappeared.

It's Seattle. :)
New York, Boston and Atlanta all get more rain than we do. The heavy stuff, too. :)
Man, I need a 28-hour day to get in all I need to accomplish. Who said retirement was boring?
Poirot atheist ? That must be from the screenwriters or director. In all the versions I saw he is catholic.
Not that it's not a good change.

Who is your favorite actor playing Poirot ?
So far, the only actor I've ever seen in the role is Branagh.
Have never seen Suchet, Ustinov, Finney (young Poirot) or any of the others,
Suchet was magnificent.
Speaking of Suchet did you saw Going postal (Discworld) he plays a great villain and his interactions with Vetinari (Charles Dance) are hilarious.
I seem to be in the minority on this, but I think Ustinov's Poirot is a lot of fun.
Ustinov being fluent in several languages helped him to reproduce Poirot Belgian accent from the novels.
You should try those with Ustinov.

2 Doctors and the son of a third. :)
I'm a fan of David Suchet's version.
I prefer Maigret, even though Simenon didn't have the best character. Particularly as played by Rowan Atkinson funnily enough. I thought he was the best out of the 3 that I've seen anyway.
I saw the first season. He is even better than in Black Adder 🥰
And I am not a Maigret fan.
A friend showed me an episode of Black Adder to try to get me into the show, 25-30 years ago. All I remember is that I thought it was absolutely abysmal.
Different tastes. You would probably hate Kaamelott too 🤣
Try Benny Hill or Mr Bean you will see the worst of English "humor".
Tried them as well, and was not amused.
How surprising that someone who grew up to consider women as objects harass women once adult 🙄
but they love you.... as long as you obedient to their religion and your husband.
I used to think soap operas weren't realistic because of all the drama. Now I just wish that were the case.
Anyone want to take bets that the real issue the LDS are having with Ballard is that he didn't send them their share?
Just as I mentioned the other day, I won't waste money on a bet for the Vatican to do the right thing. I feel the same way about the Mormons.
Don't forget the evangelicals.
Of course not. Even a halfway decent evangelical can't be counted on to do the right thing as our own Mr. Graf proves time and again.
I was struck by the fact he sent pictures in his underwear. Most sleezeballs won't wear that much when sexting (harassing) a woman. That's better, I guess?

Perhaps he sent pictures in his underwear because he is Mormon, and never takes them off?
If Mormons never take their underwear off, (ewww!) where do little Mormons come from? :)
Parthenogenesis.
There are videos of them taking their underwear off in art films. Yes, it's a subgenre.

Now be fair. Money and power could just turn them into people that get high on money and power.'
Or just who they really are.
You are so much more cynical than I am.😜😘
"The Church didn’t elaborate on what, exactly, was “morally unacceptable.”"
The "church" didn't get their cut.
It couldn't have been anything sexual, after all, they were founded by a pedophile.
Jim Caviezel. Funny way to spell Kevin Sorbo.
Caviezel ($28 million) is worth 2 Sorbos ($14 million).
I was thinking fanatical believing Christians making really bad Christian movies.
Has there ever been a good one?
$14 million? There's your proof there's no god. I mean that's first class money not private plane money, but still.

Considering the right-wing lives in fantasy, I'd only believe their claims if it was independently verified by an external third-party source.
Fantasies are supposed to be fun. I think they're having a bad acid trip.
Yep. Problem is, they're dragging us along with it.
I am sure the deep state is behind this smearing of Tim Ballard. They are responsible for everything that goes against ̶r̶e̶a̶l̶i̶t̶y̶ our narrative.
Big Adrenochrome.
The more virtuous the public persona, the more disgusting the laundry pile.

I'm pretty sure that's an insult to Mel Brooks.

OT : DM is a fighter. After several round of chemo she is not sick, she doesn't even need to take her anti nausea meds.
Good to hear.
"...but the girl actually rescued herself..."
Ironic, since conservatives/Republicans like Ballard are always touting self-reliance/self-independence.
Only for the males. According to their religion, females aren't allowed any of those.
Well, unless she has kids. If she has kids, she should be able to work two jobs, care for them, and make enough money to provide housing, food, healthcare, and whatever else they need...
All without one iota of assistance from anyone. Those kids are HER responsibility after all.
If anyone is using the blood of children to make a youth elixir, it's Tom Brady. Or maybe Elijah Wood.
Me precious.
it could be the coach of the seahawks Pete Carroll. he is 72 and looks to be in in his 50 and acts like he still in his 30's to 40's .
I'm 73, and I look just like Ryan Reynolds.
If you squint.
I look like Ryan Reynolds – in Deadpool.
I look like Cousin Itt from Addams family 😁
Well, that's better than I look. I look like Brenden Frazier in promo shots for 'The Whale'.
and have beer goggles?!!?!?!
Every little bit helps.
I look like Flo from the Progressive commercials...
The Auschwitz survivor I mentioned on the previous post looked like he was in his 50's when he was past 80.
With Dick Clark gone, Pete Carroll takes over as "The World's Oldest Teenager."
Maybe Aaron Rogers can borrow some.
No, that's just the sound of fucking dolphins.
some good new out of Floridaaaaaaaa

Drag shows distract from the fact he has no ideas of how to improve things for the citizens of the state.

After 2016, I won't say it can't happen. I can't decide which is worse, Ron or Don.
This kind of shit belongs in a horror novel.
Tell me again about parents rights ?
That's only for KKKristian parents. Obviously, these two are in need of biblical guidance, so that negates their right to determine what's best for their child. /s
It's always about projection. Always.
