To be expected, really. I have to wonder if Frankie has ever been part of a team or understands what it takes to make a group of people come together and excel and create the kind of image the USWNT has, over the last several World Cups.

And indeed, he and Trump are of a kind: two armchair quarterbacks who never played the game, yet think they know enough to critique women who play at a level neither of them has any idea about.

In other words, CLUELESS.

Expand full comment

Both Graham and Trump had their daddies start them on third base and then act like they hit a home run. 2 evil sons of evil men.

Expand full comment

The same can be said of military service. Neither Trump nor Graham served, and have no idea what it means to be a part of something far larger than themselves.

Expand full comment

Or, in simple terms, to SERVE.

Expand full comment

Trump has experience bringing a group together and make them excel at being the shittiest assholes around, then dumping all he has on them once they can no longer do anything for him. But definitely not making a world class team.

Lots of people can do positive entropy. Nowhere near as many can to NEGATIVE entropy, can build and inspire constructive action. Neither Trump nor Graham have any clue about genuine team-building or creating positive energy toward a shared goal.

For all his faults, Biden DOES know how, and he's been doing it for a while.

Franklin Graham is a remarkably stupid man who, had he not inherited the family business, is someone the world would have never heard of. Make no mistake, it is a business. Graham pays himself a million dollars a year to run his charity funded by gullible fools. His unconditional love for Donald Trump demonstrates what his two-bit religiosity actually translates to in moral terms.

Are Olympic athletes expected to sing? It's been a few years since I watched the Olympics, at least the award parts where they play the anthem, and I don't really remember. I do know that when they play the anthem to open a football game very few of the athletes are mouthing the words and I can often see some of them mouthing the wrong words. Many a game I went to did not have everyone in the stands singing along (it's been even longer though). Often times people can't sing along when the artist puts their own 'spin' on the song. Our national anthem is not a song that anyone CAN sing as evidenced by the multitude of times it was botched, badly. Just Google "National anthem fails". Rosanne was not the only one and the first page is loaded with lists of fails of OUR national anthem. (Yea, I know that Google probably biases my search from my IP but still).

I really think that if Graham wants to point fingers at the unpatriotic he should start with people who are actively fighting against the basic principles that founded the United States; democracy, religious freedom (real religious freedom not religious freedom for just Christians) and a willingness to work together to find solutions to our problems and our differences.

So he should start with himself.

OT- Hate crime victim sues fascist fuckheads: https://apnews.com/article/white-supremacist-assault-boston-lawsuit-5d30e75e6f35e84bf954bd37d9b1bfe1

Since the authorities still haven't charged anyone for assaulting him, Charles Murrell is suing "Patriot" Front, the white supremacist organization to which his attackers belonged (the attack occurred during one of their marches, and was caught on camera), from the top down. Hopefully, the suit gets some traction; since the group's Nazi-wannabe members cover their faces when they gather in public, this might be the only way to hold anyone accountable- because, y'know, the police didn't bother arresting anyone at the scene, despite multiple officers being present.

Here's hoping he takes these khaki-wearing kooks to the fucking cleaners. Just turn the whole bunch of 'em upside-down and 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘬𝘦. Don't even leave the pocket lint.

There was a meme going around yesterday or the day before that had a photo of five or six of the Swedish team players (all had blonde hair in long ponytails) and below that a photo of Rapinoe with colored hair and one other USA teammate, a black woman with a short haircut with shaved sides. The caption read something about the Swedish looks like real women compared to the USA team. Like they intentionally only used two players on the USA team because their hair is short and somehow that means the team isn’t real women. And the rest of the USA team has a bunch of women with long ponytails, besides hair does not make women women or feminine.

It really is about shitting on strong women and the LGBT community.

They don't care. Sweden isn't the United States, and Graham only cares about other countries when he can exploit them for his grift. What Graham hates the most here is the fact that the country is moving away from the straight white Christian hegemony he and his daddy promoted. He hates that he is losing power.

These men are upset about the women’s team, not for being silent during the national anthem, but because they actually accomplished a step toward equality by forcing the sport into pay equality. There was no excuse for the women’s team to be paid a tiny fraction of what the men’s team got, and it shouldn’t have had to been proven by the way it was, multiple championships, massive viewership, just overall having to be three times as good as the men.

When I was in the Army, I was always the butt of jokes about getting promoted or certain preferred details and other benefits because they assumed I was doing certain things, and not most of it was jokes on their part. Many times some dude said it to my face and plenty were saying behind my back. Then, my leadership would pass me over anyway, to avoid any appearance of special treatment, even though there was never anything going on. I did have to work harder and better than my male counterparts, just to get the minimum respect of being a soldier.

This team, Rapinoe especially, has done more for women’s sports simply because they were better than the men. Graham only cares about women’s sports when it is a cudgel to harm transgender people, not when it’s about taking care of women athletes. The whole controversy is about using women’s sports to beat down transgender athletes, that’s why women’s sports is still underfunded, under equipped, underpaid and under appreciated across the board. And the transgender athlete panic is just another tool to keep it that way and make it even worse.

Expand full comment

" Graham only cares about women’s sports when it is a cudgel to harm transgender people"

I disagree. Graham would care about women's sports regardless. He would oppose women sports professionals receiving equal pay and oppose the notion of women role models who show girls they don't have to be homemakers, even if there was no transgender rights issues involved.

Perhaps I should have said supports women’s sports. They are feigning support for women athletes as a cudgel to beat transgender people down.

"...when players think it is more about them than the nation they represent..."

It's a trucking game, stupid. Pretending that this team winning or losing says something substantial or important about the US makes no more sense than pretending a middle school tiddlywinks player's performance says something worthwhile about their school's academic record. Games are all well and good. Supporting a team is all well and good. Trying to convince people the team's record is about anything other than the game is just plain dumb.

The more Franklin Graham and Donald Trump talk, the more ashamed of my country I am. Their vision of what the United States should be strikes me as a post-apocalyptic disaster film narrative where the majority of the population is either dead or wishes they were.

The USWNT had a great run. Their protests are protected under the same Amendment Graham likes to abuse so often. If he can't say something nice, maybe he should just shut up and try pretending he's not a bully for a few minutes. (Trump has already proven he doesn't know how to shut up and that is very much is a bully, of course.)

I'm must admit I'm starting to wonder if Republicans should be allowed to speak in public after this and Casey DeSantis's comments about her husband yesterday. Apparently, when she had breast cancer, he was helpful by picking the kids up from school. (NBC Nightly News for 8/7) My poor other half had to listen to me completely lose composure over that one: I mean really, if the best that can be said of your husband is that he picked h̲i̲s̲ ̲o̲w̲n̲ ̲c̲h̲i̲l̲d̲r̲e̲n̲ up from their educational facility when their mother couldn't, I have serious questions about what the term "family values" means to you.
