I wish the irrational right could bring itself to care as much about assault rifles and the carnage they create, as they do pride flags. We are treated to daily dosses of outrage over gay people and 'woke.' A concept that seems to be a blanket term for everything conservatives hate. What we're really witnessing is the death rattle of a dying religion, and the gnashing of teeth over a culture war they know they have lost.

XJC's avatar

Christianity isn't dying...it's dividing the human world into believers (delusional) and non-believers--most of whom believe in other delusional religions. Sane people (atheists) remain an enlightened minority. The minority is growing, but it's far from being the majority. Sorry, that's reality. (On the positive side, no non-humans have professed to be Christians, though I expect that to change. That's when we'll know it's really dying.)

The fight for the rights of minorities has a long and storied history. The fact that we seem to be moving backward now is what scares me. This country has built law after law on the rights of these minorities. Housing, discrimination, labor, and even divorce law have all benefited from an attitude of the general population to protect the under-represented and the downtrodden. Christians becoming upset because a subset of the human population simply exists is counterproductive to a future of a nation that is better together.

People crying because The US is not one culture goes against every idea I grew up with. We were taught in school and mass media that the US was a 'melting pot' of cultures. When I was a kid, the USSR was our biggest boogeyman and Nazi Germany was only one generation removed from the collective consciousness of our people. These are two examples of societies that tried to become one homologous society and failed because of it. The attitudes of these so-called Christians is closer to the idea of communism than of the America I grew up with.

jomicur's avatar

"So-called christians"? What they are is christians, period. Every last thing they advocate--subjugation of women, vilification of LGBT people, violence (up to and including mass murder), loathing for pluralism, and on and on--is perfectly consistent with the doctrines and behavior of the christian church for two millennia. Anything enlightened or progressive in christianity is a recent development and, being dyed-in-the-wool reactionaries, American christers despise every bit of it. Equally alarming is the clear fact that the purportedly enlightened, progressive christians NEVER speak out or ACT in opposition to the regressive ones. Christianity, at least in America, is fully a lost cause, and any hope anyone feels for it is sorely misplaced.

MalibuMan's avatar

I'm not so sure about that. I think Christ would disavow them.

jomicur's avatar

I'm not talking about Christ, I'm talking about christianity. The two have conspicuously little to do with one another.

MalibuMan's avatar

No doubt they are "true" Christians. In fact they embody what it is to be a Christian.

Lynn James's avatar

Christ, if He ever existed, seems to have a rather dark side Himself.

I agree....the Jesus grew up with, was taught about, believed in, etc., is what I now think of as "Hippie Jesus." I came across this moniker from another comment section for another blog somewhere (can't remember exactly) but it perfectly summed up the version I believed in. The one who defied social customs to speak with the Woman at the Well. The one who told the Pharisees seeking to execute the adultress, "Let he who Is without sin cast the first stone." The one who told the rich young ruler to sell all he had and give to the poor. The one who told Simon Peter, "Feed my lambs." The one who healed the sick. The one who delivered the Sermon on the Mount, championing those who were meek, merciful, or in mourning. The one who hung out with the publicans, the sinners, and other marginalized groups, and referred to the haughty religious overlords of his day as "whited sepulchers."

The first Bible verses I was taught in my four-year-olds' Sunday School class were "Be ye kind one to another," and "God is love." As a teenager, I participated in youth group fundraisers to help the poor, the elderly, and the shut-ins in our town.

To make a long story short, I discovered little by little how this version I held in my head was not the case if one looked closely at Scripture, or took numerous classes in history and literature that gradually erased my belief in any tangible evidence that he even existed. Still, I believed, because that was the very essence or "faith" as I knew and understood it -- to trust that there was a God and a Jesus no matter what "the world" had to say about it. "Faith is walking to the edge of all the light that you have and taking one more step."

When the vile hatefulness of Pat Robertson, Jim Bakker, et al came to light, I defaulted to the "no true Christian" mantra, but the revelations just kept coming year after year, month after month, and finally, day after day, hitting closer and closer to home.

It was a slow unraveling process, because I clung very hard to my beloved Hippie Jesus belief; but ultimately, every last shred of it slipped away.

What people do "in the name of Jesus" today is terrifying.

Zorginipsoundsor's avatar

"Let he who Is without sin cast the first stone."

That episode never happened, it was added to the bible sometime around the third century.

Lynn James's avatar

As a child, I was supposed to know this?

There's no evidence I'm now aware of that any of it happened, but that's not the point I was trying to make here.

I was attempting to sketch out what I was taught and what I believed, and why I thought for so long that Jesus was a benevolent and loving being who championed the vulnerable and was a friend to the homeless, the hungry, the sick, the outcast, and the destitute; and why, after having these images of love and compassion ingrained in my psyche for so long, I found them so hard to let go of.

Christians push:

1. Assault rifles and weapons

2. Pseudo-science

3. Anti-intellectualism and Irrationality at its finest

4. Hate, bigotry and boycott

5. Marginalization of immigrants and the eradication of women's bodily autonomy rights.

6. A love for Donald Trump more than Jesus Christ.

7. Cherry pick the bible with verses taken out of context because they don't even understand the book they extol but rarely if ever read. And if they read, they simply don't have the education to grasp concepts like manners and customs of the Bible, figures of speech, dispensationalism.

You cannot argue with stupid for they will bring you down to their level and beat you with years of experience.

Any questions?

Stop arguing the point, get out and vote. Vote against the bigotry, vote against the pseudo-science, vote against the anti-intellectualism. Keep voting so these things stay out of government. Don't give up. Don't give in. Vote.

NOGODZ20's avatar

I vote in every and all election(s), no matter how big or small, be it federal, state or local.

MalibuMan's avatar

I do early voting sister unless the conservatives start banning that.

Lynn James's avatar

I relied on early voting, because it was so difficult to get enough time off on Election Day. I lived in an urban area where lines were always several hours long. It almost no longer exists in the city where I used to live.

Ditto ballot drop boxes. I welcomed those, but the one I used to use no longer exists.

The repugs want only the leisure class able to vote. Because guess which party they tend to favor.

As for those of us working multiple jobs with no paid time off and caring for elderly relatives, we're screwed, unless we just find a way to lose an entire day's pay without consequences.

Once again, evangelical Christians demonstrate just how ouch-cube intolerant snowflakes they can be, and yeah, it is downright laughable. What is almost as ridiculous is what I presume to be The Chosen's production supervisors, jumping through hoops, trying to explain why that flag was there, et cetera. One more fact that evangelicals either cannot or will not acknowledge is that the LGBTQ+ community is EVERYWHERE, and if they can't live with that, it is THEIR problem and NOT OURS

Had I been asked to make any kind of statement regarding said flag, I think it would have been something like: WE'RE HERE, WE'RE QUEER, 𝗚𝗘𝗧 𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗜𝗧!!!

Zorginipsoundsor's avatar

Or as Will and Jack put it, " WE'RE HERE, WE'RE QUEER, GIVE US A LIGHT BEER!!!

Dude I love Guinness and also the British creamy ale in a yellow can. (Boddington's)

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Never had Boddington's, but if it's a malty brew and not horribly bitter, I'm all for it!

MalibuMan's avatar

Almost buttery...Just so creamy. It is what I would call dangerously delicious.

Cobb coon cup.. (Told you guys I am learning Thai)

Black Hole and DM mourner's avatar

You will eat a cobb salad and a maine coon stew in a cup ?

MalibuMan's avatar

In Thai, "cup" is a form of politeness and also an acquiesce of sorts.

Edit: not acquiesce (wrong word since that implies reluctant agreement). It is more in line if you say something that I agree with, I may be inclined to simply say "cup"

Khob Khun Krup (Sounds like Cobb coon cup) is literallly a polite way for a guy to say "thank you"

Old Man Shadow's avatar

You can tell it's not about theology or doctrine because they can't even tolerate the existence of a Pride flag. They hate the LGBTQ community. They hate them with a passion and would happily pass a law here mandating capital punishment for LGBTQ people if they could.

cdbunch's avatar

And did in Uganda.

Bagen Onuts's avatar

They hate us so vehemently because they are fighting their own same sex desires within themselves. The louder they scream the stronger their desires.

NOGODZ20's avatar

So sick and tired of the incessant whining of Christians over every tiny little thing.

What was it their Jesus told them? Something about plucking their eyes out if they saw something that offended them. Why aren't homophobic xtians blind by this time?

So much for their claims of following their savior. Even Jesus asked why people called him Lord when they didn't or wouldn't do what he told them.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

Well, they’re supposed to pluck out their eye if it caused them to sin, not if they were offended. But I get your drift.

NOGODZ20's avatar

I accidently briefly upvoted myself. Fortunately, I don't have to worry about taking out an eye or two no matter how offensive I find upvoting myself, even accidentally. :)

cdbunch's avatar

Ah, it's officially Pride Month. Christians are whining about it.

MalibuMan's avatar

I was going to say "Let the whining begin for the Christian", but they have literally never stopped whining, so it is kind of pointless.

"Waldo" was one of Robert Heinlein's most brilliant stories.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

I’m not convinced that this isn’t a publicity stunt like last year’s. Sure, they’re losing the right wing lunatics, but they are hoping to gain the saner folks. Even with Bud Light and Target, the initial reaction is RWNJs flip their shit, stock market value drops, the left fights back for LGBT rights by spending their cash, the product/brand shows record growth and the stock prices go right back up. The folks affecting stock prices are known to be very conservative and they might be trying to use their influence to bankrupt the companies that are doing the Pride capitalism as their part in the culture wars, but the majority of people really are not on board with the right’s agenda. Coming back to this particular controversy, the producers might have caught on to the pattern and decided to use it to their advantage. Taking granted that the pro-LGBT folks will fight for the underdog and realizing that even the right wing loonies eventually go back to their ways and forget that they were outraged a minute ago. (I mean, really, how many times have they boycotted Target and Disney and others over essentially the same issue, and still need to call for a new boycott every year.)

Black Hole and DM mourner's avatar

If it's, like you said, a publicity stunt, it failed with me. Not interested to watch it when there is so much books to read.

I know we should believe people when they say who they are, but when what they say they are is not in line with the other things they say or do, can we acknowledge that maybe they aren’t who they say they are. Who is not convinced of someone’s identity on this thread? I mean, there’s only a few comments and they’ve already given away their game.

Black Hole and DM mourner's avatar

I am sorry Val I don't understand your comment.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

There’s a person on this thread claiming to be one thing but then his comments seem to be supportive of the opposite. I feel like they might be trying to act like they fit with the community to get a little farther in their argument against the values supported here than if they were honest about themselves.

larry parker's avatar

But, but... he has "atheist friends".

NOGODZ20's avatar

Bet they're the same thing as his black friends, his Jewish friends, his "fill in the blank" friends...
