Here we have yet another Christian claiming she's being persecuted for her faith, while making it clear she feels she has some kind of right to persecute a group she disapproves of. I have no sympathy for her. The world is moving on from the worn-out religious doctrines she clings to. Paying the victim here doesn't resonate with anyone who doesn't already agree with her. Mutual reinforcement is kind of what organized religion is all about. The approval of the herd constitutes some kind of truth with them.

It's not christianity if there's no hypocrisy involved. Of course it's okay for her to persecute people she hates, the Supreme Court decided christians could.

Several decades ago when a new christ movie came out - Passion of the Christ maybe? - xtains were outraged. A comic strip came out about how to combat it:

Step 1: DON'T WATCH THE MOVIE. It's best to talk about something you know nothing about and take the word of others as gospel.

The same applies here: DON'T READ THE BIBLE, just believe what you are told.

The thing that gets me about these people is just the nastiness and sheer meanness. One of my Mom's pet peeves that she always brought up when I was a kid was people who can't even make a tiny little effort when it comes to interacting with the other people we share the planet with. Return a smile or say hi when you see another parent you see around at the school, hold a door, that kind of stuff. And if it's important to a person to be referred to by a certain pronoun, it's really going to kill them to make that tiny effort? But no, they aren't going to budge even one millimeter, despite the fact that it could make another person's day better with no effort on their part. I wonder how a christian would view the same issue of disrespect but without it being specific to gender identity. For example, new employee meets Rob, one of his co-workers. One day new employee looks in the company directory and sees that Rob is his middle name and Frank is his first. New employee then insists on calling Rob Frank, even though Rob insists that he really doesn't like Frank and would prefer to be called Rob. Ok, that is completely toxic behavior and not the kind of person you want on the team. So after enough of it, you fire this person because they can't get along with their colleagues. So why should it be different because the perp is claiming religion as his reason for being as asshole? Accommodating religion is fine, but if you have an employee disrespecting other employees and potentially customers, you can't run a business that way. Are they supposed to shut the entire franchise down because they lucked into hiring a christian who can't respect the people around her?

Expand full comment

"I wonder how a christian would view the same issue of disrespect but without it being specific to gender identity. "

Oh, they'd absolutely flip a sh*t. My grandma, bless her backwards 1920s West Virginian soul, used "negro" until the day she died. It's what she grew up with. Didn't mean anything by it. But I can guarantee you Ms. Trice would not have stood for it, and frankly, had they ever met, Ms. Trice would've been absolutely in the right to not stand for it. In that hypothetical exchange, my grandma is in the wrong. And grandma's age, culture, etc. is no excuse. Yes, us old dogs sometimes need to learn new tricks. Because what counts as polite talk and appropriate ways to address people does indeed change over decades. And Christian dogs are in the same boat as old dogs.

In school, that's called bullying, and yes, that creates a toxic environment as well. Case in point: my dad had a French name. He was constantly bullied, both by other kids and by his teachers, for his name. This involved calling him by a girl's name and referring to dad as "she." A wierd experience for a straight white guy. Finally, when he was about 13, he'd had enough and demanded he be called by a nickname. Apparently got into some playground fights to enforce that. I didn't know til about 6th grade what dad's birth name was, or that he'd changed it to a nickname, or why he was always referred to by his first and middle initials in documents. So that trauma was, for dad, lifelong. Even when he was elderly (in his 80s) he hated going to the doctor because he'd always get the question, "What's your *real* name?" He didn't live long enough to even hear about the bits of trans acceptance we have now, but he'd likely empathize about names and pronouns, at least.

These are breaks in the social contract, and this is what leads to holocausts, not people living authentically. Her comment was like telling Jewish people that they’re causing the Holocaust. Christians aren’t dying from this culture war, LGBTQ people are, black people are, women are. I was a conservative, fundamentalist Evangelical for the first 19 of my working years. Not once was I ever fired for being a Christian.

Do you know why?

Because I wasn't an unprofessional asshole.

I was being paid by my employer to do a job. I agreed to do that job. Doing a job required showing basic human respect and decency to coworkers and clients. It did not require me to insult LGBTQ coworkers. It expected me to be a goddamned adult, keep my controversial opinions to myself, and work with everyone regardless of religion, orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, etc. to ensure that clients were happy and the company was successful. It required me to make sure my subordinates felt valued and respected.

So that's what I did. And it was remarkably easy to do so. I just treated other people the way I wanted to be treated. Funny how that works.

Of course, once I treated folks like I wanted to be treated, I became friends with a gay coworker, discovered that they weren't god-hating abominations like I'd been taught and that started my process of deconverting away from being an Evangelical fundamentalist asshole, so I'm sure these types of fundie Christians are deathly afraid of that.

That's not quite what we're talking about. Both Hitchens' and Springsteen's very professions are about social commentary. So "shut the fuck up and do your job" for them IS to do social commentary. What we're talking about is more like if Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa started yelling at each other about Chinese foreign policy and refused to practice together for the upcoming concert. In such a case, Bruce would have to tell them to knock it the fuck off and focus on the music.

And indeed many good rock acts have been brought down due to internal unprofessional conduct. It's not a good thing, even for "companies" whose job it is to comment on tendentious social issues.
