Okay, I'll bite. HOW is having an Autism Awareness Week raising anything above their putative savior? Is he going to say the same thing about Black History Month or any other holiday or event which notes an issue worthy of our attention? I should note that christers have both Lent and Advent, leading up to Easter and Christmas, respectively, so it's not as though their boy J isn't getting a considerable degree of notice on the calendar, never mind the other media means evangelists use to jawbone people into joining their ranks.

I should mention, too: I have friends who are on the spectrum, and they're good people. What Baker is doing here is what his kind do entirely too often: PUNCH DOWN, something those people do not deserve. Sadly, it seems as though that, if ANYTHING gets attention that evangelicals aren't getting, they have to feel aggrieved and they have to lash out ... which strikes me as pretty juvenile behavior.

WWJD? Supposedly, he would heal people with various afflictions. Sounds like that ain’t happening.

Expand full comment

You should consider that many people with autism are not afflicted. They have a different way of seeing and experiencing things than we do, but it's not wrong. Just different.

A friend who is autistic and a writer says it's like different operating systems for a computer. I thought that was a perfect way of looking at it.

Expand full comment

I suspect we already know his thoughts on Black History Month. I also suspect his true beliefs about autism and other "special needs" people involves demonic possession.

Expand full comment

So if they develop a test that would recognize autism in a fetus, would he support aborting a demonically possessed fetus?

Expand full comment

Good question. One you'll never hear him answer.

Expand full comment

It may be related to their shrinking numbers. Evangelical proselytization functions like a pyramid scheme: the 'senior sellers' like this Pastor are always encouraging their 'junior sellers' (the teachers, parents, etc) to spend every living breathing second selling the product. It's not in their self-interest to recognize or validate their 'junior sellers' may have other ways to spend their time.

Punching down is what a certain class of so-called Christian simply loves to do. Its intent is to make the puncher greater than he is.

It's sort of like the Christian passion for sin leveling. The point is not to bring your minor sins up to the level of my great ones, but my big sins down to the level of your minor ones.

"If Jesus Christ led Trinity. would HE have an Autism Awareness Week? Of course not!"

Hey, P-ass-tor Blockhead: The distinct developmental disorder that's now recognized as autism wasn't known in the 1st Century CE. You know. Back when your imaginary savior was casting demons into pigs. Autism as we now know it was officially recognized in the 1940s (though Eugen Bleuler was the first to use the word in 1911).

And I just love the arrogance of Christians who seem to think they somehow know the mind of a person who allegedly lived 2000 years ago and can speak for them.

Period.”

Individuality is demonic. Conform, or else.

β€œ"The word 'Christian' means 'Like Christ,' and it was given to the followers of Christ because they acted just like Jesus.β€œ

Yup, that’s what Jesus did. He went around telling people they were demons because they were different. He hid away the folks who didn’t comport themselves exactly like the majority.

You provide accommodations for the students , and yet you refuse to educate the rest of the school about those students needs. Autism awareness week is not about identity for the children with autism, it’s education for those who do not have autism. If you feel this way, then don’t have honors society or graduation or sports or anything at all the encourages the students to achieve anything. None of that stuff has anything to do with Jesus.

I hope the school loses lots of families, not just the school but the church as well.

Of course they don't.

But this jackass is perfectly happy to punch down on people with autism or mental health issues.

I don't have autism, but I do have depression and anxiety and was told by pastors that depression was a sin. I was told I should have the "joy of the Lord" and if I didn't have that joy, then something was wrong with my "spiritual life". It was my fault I was depressed. I was letting God down in some way either through neglect or sin which made me feel worse. A rather vicious spiral of depression leading to guilt and shame leading to more depression.

I don't know if that's the cause or result of this culture's dismissal of mental illness as not a 'real' illness. We constantly treat mental health as different from physical health, especially insurance companies. It's disgusting.

My psychiatrist gave me TMS treatment pro-bono. I don't know why and I don't think it was fair to all those people who had to pay for it, but I am grateful ze did. It's the closest thing to a miracle I've ever seen. Certainly more than I've ever seen prayer accomplish.

Some really quick Google research shows me that it may be that 1 in 36 people are on the spectrum, yet people with autism are more under-represented than atheists are. This is not really a surprise as those with autism are unlikely to excel as politicians due to the nature of autism. There are way too many politicians who want to legislate against anything they find is different, most of the time while using their religion as justification for their bigotry. The good news is that many of the kids coming up to take over are much more open to the differences that made the United States united. Until we get rid of religion altogether, these people are still going to exist. Right now the single most important thing we can do is vote blue!
