This is about as compelling an argument as could be made for keeping religion out of government. Once the true-believer becomes convinced they are operating under divine sanction, they are capable of any horror imaginable.

True believers can be found in every religion, ideology or mass movement. They are willing to do horrible things because they know they are right and want to impose their views upon everyone else. That's why the separation of church and state is a good thing.

That's part of it. They also wished to preserve power in the "right" hands. At least in the beginning. I cannot know the minds of dead men except for their written words. Maybe they would've thought a voting woman would've been a good idea. But an Indigenous Person - that's going to far!

They had no comeback.

> " was told by Christians that he was never a true Christian"

I find it so very strange that their patter NEVER varies, not the least little bit. It seems to me that if they really were inspired by Yahweh, or the Holy Spirit, or whoever the fuck, they'd be at least a bit more interesting to listen to. (Just look at all the ancient writers inspired by the Muses.) But no, it's always the same damn thing, over and over again. A truly benevolent God would have handed down a commandment against being a bore.

No. They may be believers whose lives don't match up with their faith in my opinion. It's not deflecting to point out that true believers are a threat to the rest of us regardless of the basis for their belief. Those killed by the true believers in Communism are just as dead as those killed by the true believers in Christianity.

They are believers whose lives don't match up with *your* faith. Their lives match up to their own faith just fine. And while fascist racist Nazism is a 20th century invention, it is arguably the case that Isaac's Christianity matches up with the European Christianity of 300s-1700s more than yours does. After all, the crusaders, Torquemada, Martin Luther....these were not equality-promoting guys.

Expand full comment
David Graf's avatar

It may match up better but are you saying that it has to be that way?

Expand full comment
ericc's avatar

Of course it doesn't have to be that way. MLK was Christian. Isaac Anderson is Christian. By all means you go out there and try and change all the Isaac Anderson Christians into MLK Christians. But until you accomplish that, don't claim "their life matches their Christian faith" is only MLKs and not Isaac Andersons. It's both.

And yeah lots of people were killed by true believing bolsheviks. But bolsheviks aren't a threat to the freedom of gays and blacks in 2023 America. Isaac Anderson Christians are.

David, you and I would agree on this. Those killed by the true believers and communism are just as dead as those killed by the true believers in Christianity.

But there is a MORAL difference, and that's why I prefer the true believer communists to the true believer Christians, although that is a bit like saying that I prefer cyanide to strychnine. Communists of that sort represent the supremacy of the power of the state, where the state becomes just like God, except for the magic and the myths and the miracles. Christians of that sort represent the power of the state fornicating with the moral authority of the loving, incredibly moral, infinite creator of the entire infinite universe. A Communist would never say "I am torturing you and murdering you because I love you so much and morality, nay, righteousness, dictates that I do this." That type of Christian also represents the supremacy of the power of the state, but with an extra dollop of God loves you.

Anderson: Nazis we’re doing the right thing

Also Anderson: the Holocaust didn’t happen, the Nazis couldn’t possibly have cremated all those Jews.

Anderson Jr: there’s nothing wrong with being a Nazi. Genocide is a good thing. I’m a good person. I only want to to kill people my genocidal god tells me to.

Anderson Sr: it’s unfair to attack my son who’s advocating murdering people for inherent traits.

On the TBT forums, a guy would frequently make racist comments and then deny he is a racist when called on it. One time, after I called him out on it, he replied, "I'm not a racist because I have never 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 discriminated against anyone." Which I seriously doubt. That's when I realized racists define racism in such a way that their racism isn't racist.

They also recognize that racists/bigots are bad people, and since they are a "good person," they can't be a racist or a bigot.

Take it a step further, it makes me wish that homeschooling were under SOME kind of government supervision, which of course would go over with people like the Anderson's like the proverbial lead balloon.
