WE HEARD YOU THE FIRST TIME, JULIE!!!

Why is it that people like Hupp feel as though they can blatantly promote their religious hallucinations in public schools, and then, when they're called on it, act as though it never happened. Sorry [not sorry!], Julie, but that just don't work as well these days, not in the age of the internet, sure as hell not when the Freedom From Religion Foundation and American Atheists, never mind the ACLU and other organizations, work to keep our government and publicly funded operations SECULAR.

The way to beat this kind of crap is simple: COUNTER-PUNCH. Do it fast, as soon after the errant statement is made, and preferably from a LOT of counter-punchers ... because this noise has got to STOP.

ericc's avatar

I hope the 'counter-punch' is tons of nonchristian volunteers that make it a great year for all the kids.

Also, I hope that if she asks them why they signed up, they give the response "well we saw your notice asking for Christ-centered. This made us feel it was important that the entire community be represented."

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

Involuntary permanent vacation from the board.

ericc's avatar

That will have to wait until next election. My hope is for the current term and board to be supported by lots of Vishnu centered, Allah centered, Buddha centered, Humanist centered, etc. volunteers right now.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

They community is looking at a recall, which could happen as soon as November.

But, what you suggest couldn’t hurt either, and should happen whether she’s there or not.

Black Hole and DM mourner's avatar

And find candidates to run her ilk from your schools.

painedumonde's avatar

The point, the occult point that is, is the dismantling of the education system as a whole. Make no mistake, they, religionists, want your spawn dumb and accepting.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Sorry [not sorry!], mine is intelligent, questioning, and skeptical.

painedumonde's avatar

It's good to hear, mine likewise.

Dear Mrs. Hupp, I am writing to apply for a volunteer position as an advisor for your school board. I am a parent and retired licenced family therapist with a Master's degree in Educational Psychology, and also more than 25 years post-retirement experience educating children about science.

I'm also an atheist activist, a leader of a local atheist group, a life-long Democrat, and a decades-long member of the ACLU. I'm a supporting member of the NAACP and Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, (PFLAG) and a member of the American Library Association, actively resisting the banning of books in libraries and schools.

So I think my qualifications and experience will make me a very good fit for your school board's needs.

I await your response, but I won't be holding my breath.

Yours truly, Richard Wade (he, him)

Richard Wade's avatar

HAHAHAHAHA! Thanks, jomicur, that cracked me up. :D

Qualifications?

Rape, murder, arson and rape.

Are you Christ Centered?

Absolutely.

Kinky. Sorry Richard.

Whitney's avatar

Funny this should happen just as we're getting to Divine Command Theory in my ethics course.

Clearly, Mrs. Hupp is one of those Christians who firmly believes that not only are non-Christians wrong, they are willfully and intentionally wrong since they aren't following God the way they should be. From that position, an apology for her inability to include others outside her faith becomes impossible. In short, she's not going to apologize because in her mind, she'd be apologizing for not being willing to commit the "sin" of seeing things any other way.

She said what she intended to say, and now wants to try and sweeten it up a bit so she stays acceptable in the public eye. That won't work out, as we've already seen, the public has started figuring out how this works and isn't impressed. So they shouldn't be; we know this is just a verbal shells game attempting to keep only the 'right' sort of people in charge. Christian dominionism all the way down; really nothing more than a struggle for power wrapped up in Christian theology language.

I hope Mrs. Hupp resigns, but I'm not going to hold my breath too much on it. The truth is that currently, too many of us just don't vote and when we do, we haven't vetted local candidates for things like school board elections. Voter apathy is going to get us in a lot of hot water, since we know that this sort of white supremacist Christian near always votes, and they vote from the pulpit. That's how Trump won in 2016, and if we don't watch out, it'll happen again in 2024. Please, for pity's sake, prove me wrong on this one.

Richard S. Russell's avatar

Hey, Julie, would you be willing to settle for some "school centered" or "community centered" or "child centered" applicants instead?

NOGODZ20's avatar

"Christ-centered," Leavens-Hupp? Does that include Mormons? Catholics? Jehovah's Witnesses? The Salvation Army? Christian Scientists? Greek/Russian Orthodox? Unification Church? All of the sects of Christianity your religion deem "Not True Christians?

Joe King's avatar

Amazing how they manage to dog whistle with a set of bagpipes.

None of it matters to me. I prefer caramel-centered over any of them.

chocolate-centered is good too.

With sour cream.

Or skip whatever the sour cream was supposed to go on and just give me a spoon for the sour cream.

Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuzz's avatar

My dad told a story that he went to some work function that had a dinner buffet. One of his friends loaded up his baked potato with what he thought was sour cream,, turned out to be whipped cream from the dessert bar.

With or without garlic and chives ?

Rich Wilson's avatar

(according to a comment on her page she's a Mormon)

NOGODZ20's avatar

In that case, she may want to be careful what she wishes for. She would be in for a rude surprise from 'true' Christians.

Rich Wilson's avatar

Another Mormon called her out. I cited Santa Fe v Doe (plaintiffs were LDS and Catholic)

Honestly I think the notion that "Christ centered=moral is so engrained in her that she doesn't have the faintest clue what she did.

Grant Jackson's avatar

These people truly are insane They just can't function without their jebus. My sister and most of her children are like that. Prayers used to be a minute or two-now prayers are 15-20 minute ordeals. Everyday conversation is always full of "blessings" "Amens" Hallelujahs, etc. Every encounter with someone is very often a chance to "save" them.

XJC's avatar

Sounds like MAGA faithfuls.

Lynn James's avatar

I knew a lot of people like that in my old hometown in De Satan Land. There are a couple up here in Minnesota as well (surprised the heck out of me, as I was hoping to get totally away from that cray-cray, but there you are).

Old Man Shadow's avatar

In my experience, folks on the good side of Christianity don't go about using phrases like "Christ centered" because they want everyone to feel welcome and not excluded.

It's usually the language of the Dark Side to say, "white, conservative assholes like me."

ericc's avatar

Their pastor would in church. But the 'good side' recognizes that using public office to promote their own Christ-centeredness is kinda like the boss asking an employee out on a date; you don't use *that* position to do *that* thing.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

I didn’t want to exclude anyone, but if the candidates could all be Christian that would be great. Even better if they are republicans and ready to defund public schools altogether.

Sure Jan.

Rich Wilson's avatar

Unfortunately the criteria to sit on the K-5 science curriculum advisory board includes being a parent of a K-5 in the district, and also able attend meetings 8:30-3 on weekdays.

Ya, working parents need not apply.

The only reason this advisory board exists is because conservatives don't like the teacher supported curriculum.

jomicur's avatar

I'm not sure I see the need for a parents advisory board at all. What could it tell them that they couldn't hear from parents testifying at an open meeting? It just sounds like she wants someone to backstop her christian agenda for her.

Rich Wilson's avatar

Yep. A few years ago there was an update to some elementary/middle school curriculum, and it followed the requirements of SB48.

"51204.5. Instruction in social sciences shall include the early history of California and a study of the role and contributions of both men and women, Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, European Americans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans, persons with disabilities, and members of other ethnic and cultural groups, to the economic, political, and social development of California and the United States of America, with particular emphasis on portraying the role of these groups in contemporary society."

There was community push-back to the idea of mentioning that Alan Turing was gay. Teach about him sure, but just not the gay part. It came to a board meeting, and after several hours of community feedback (pretty divided) the board narrowly voted to accept that curriculum.

The board as it stands now would almost certainly reject that curriculum. You know, "don't say gay". Yeah California is blue but it has some DEEP red areas.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Why is Leavens-Hupp calling for people of her faith to occupy positions of power when their own scripture tells them to "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things" in Colossians 3:2? It's like she never read the bible.

There is an unfortunate tendency, especially with conservative Christians, to conflate their religiosity with morality. It is rarely the case. Some of the most mean-spirited and intolerant people I have ever known never missed church. History is full of examples of the horrors religious people, acting in the name of their religion have inflicted on their fellow humans. There is so much wrong with what she did, I don't even know where to begin. She needs to be recalled ASAP.

XJC's avatar

Sure, just like Trump who needed to be impeached twice and escaped with impunity. Ms. Jesus has job security and is using that to push her Jesus agenda.

"Hupp “has always been proud of the diversity of our community"

But she is, I am sure she shakes hands with people who follow a different christian flavor.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

They have both kinds, country and western.

That’s the kind of diversity she’s proud of.

Joe King's avatar

I wonder how she would react to finding out that the diversity in the area was much greater once upon a time.

cdbunch's avatar

It is diverse, it's got a black family and a couple of 'Mexicans'. /s

Just like my Lutheran church growing up. We were diverse. We had Germans AND Scandinavians!

RegularJoe's avatar

[When another parent asked if the board would accept an application from an atheist, Hupp—stripped of her characteristic suburban-mom-emoji- overload sentences—simply said “yes.”]

Would that application be dutifully filed without consideration with the rest of the applications from unacceptable applicants? Also "yes".

Black Hole and DM mourner's avatar

What a fancy way to say thrown in the nearest garbage bin or shredder.

RegularJoe's avatar

Oh, I believe they have to keep them on file, show how welcoming they are, yadda yadda.

Joe King's avatar

Keep them, yes. Consider them, Christian Fucking Privilege won't let them do that.

It's time for secular/atheist/agnostic "stealth campaigns."

During the Reagan/Bush Era, I was still nominally Christian - or at least still in the Church-0n-Sundays habit - and I recall hearing people discussing fellow Christians running for office without disclosing their religious agendas until after they were elected. These were referred to as "stealth campaigns" and were considered a very good way to fly under the "pinko-liberal-media radar" and get "good Christian people" into office.

Donrox's avatar

My wife would say she put it in the "circular file" (note Bhm: that's a euphemism for a waste basket or trash bin. You probably figured that out)

So that's what Warehouse 13 is about ?

cdbunch's avatar

Warehouse 13 is about collecting and storing artifacts with magical powers (described with pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo) so they don't fall into the wrong hands. It is the 13th such warehouse, this one has black-ops support of the U.S. government.

I enjoyed it but drifted away around season 3 or 4 waiting on new episodes.
