I think this is a great idea but I think an even better idea would be to mobilize secular adults with some qualifications to teach critical thinking and study skills to middle school kids so it had a chance to soak in and take effect before they start high school.

Zorginipsoundsor's avatar

Nazi Moms would scream their heads off and make death threats to any school board that did that.

Matri's avatar

As if they aren't already doing that?

WOKEISM!!!! SOSHULISM!!!

Good thing this school isn't in Floriduh. DeSepsis would have the state police shoot the recipient of the professorship.

NOGODZ20's avatar

There are idiots screaming WOKEISM!!!! over the new MCU movie "The Marvels."

Unbefreakinglievable.

Alverant's avatar

Is anyone surprised? An MCU movie with three women leads, two of them are PoC.

NOGODZ20's avatar

And don't forget Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, a powerful PoC.

XJC's avatar

SLJ will always be Jules Winnfield, infamous for this powerful biblical quote and preamble https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2WK_eWihdU which pretty much sums up the Judeo-Christian world view.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Turns out he's a good Catholic in real life.

You know. Like Joe Biden. ;)

cdbunch's avatar

I don't know if I'd call Ms. Marvel a woman yet. At least not from the couple of episodes I saw. She's a girl. :) But otherwise, spot on.

wreck's avatar

Screaming WOKEISM is way easier than thinking.

I must admit that I think Southpark's The Panderverse is funny.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Gods of Olympus, I haven't watched SP in decades. :)

Holytape's avatar

Well, the movie kept at least 80% of the audience awake. If that isn't wokism, I don't know what is.

NOGODZ20's avatar

FWIW, the movie won't even hit theaters until Friday.

These were just racist, misogynist bozos venting their spleens and having a case of the vapors over nothing.

They changed the actor who plays Goose!

Good on 'em. Hopefully many other institutions will follow suit.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

This is great news. I would just wonder if a program like this might attract butt-hurt believers who would attempt to challenge the principles being discussed in classes under the Secular Studies heading. I would also be interested in knowing if that was an issue at Pitzer College, and if so, how did they deal with it. Of course, the best way to counter would-be proselytizers is to confront them with the detailed truth about their belief systems, even though that information would clash with "their 'truth.'"

In any case, what this program needs is A LOT MORE LIKE IT!

Len Koz's avatar

I wonder if any young believer would think of himself as the student in "God's Not Dead".

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Ha ... in this day and age, that kid would get scrapped, three ways from Thursday, before he had a chance to even say, "Kalam!" Times have changed since that dreadful piece of celluloid was released, and NOT in favor of true believers.

Maltnothops's avatar

I feel like I should watch that movie if only to see for myself how awful it is.

OT. Rewatched Fifth Element yesterday!

Leeloo Dallas. Multipass.

Maltnothops's avatar

“Is Leeloo in trouble?”

“When is Leeloo not in trouble?”

NOGODZ20's avatar

No need to see God's Not Dead. It's basically based on the anti-evolution Jack Chick tract "Big Daddy?"

https://www.chick.com/products/tract?stk=0055

EDIT for clarity

Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuzz's avatar

I thought you meant the Fifth Element was based on a Chick Tract.

Black Hole and DM mourner's avatar

If it was from a jack chick itchy toilet paper Leeloo would have died less 5 minutes after her first apparition by missing the taxi and Corben Dallas would have received a message telling him Leeloo was one of Satan's agent and he would have converted on the spot.

Edit : NOGODZ guess what I am eating right now.

OwossoHarpist's avatar

O/T: Hey! Guess what? Despite the sign that says "No Solicitations" attached to the door of my house, two men from the Seventh Day Adventist cult unexpectedly came to my door to solicited SDA crappy books written by none other than the cult founder Ellen G. White responsible for inventing false visions of herself visiting God in Heaven. They advised me to download an app on my smartphone that would have allowed me to listen to all those Christian scummy ideological crud responsible for spawning young earth creationism so I can in their words "learn about Jesus" as if I didn't know Him.

Well, Here's what I did to them. Went to a nearby public dumpster and tossed them in the trash-- the proper way to handle religious books being solicited to me.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Ha! Never had any SDAs around here, only JWs ... and I have exactly ZERO problem letting them know where I stand.

Which is probably why, after one or two visits, they don't come around again! 😁

Zorginipsoundsor's avatar

I would be tempted to put up a sign that says, "Door to Door Jesus Sales People Will Be Shot On Sight." Which I'm sure would get me a visit from the SPPD.

Lynn James's avatar

This is a sign I had on my door back in the 90's, for all the good it did.

"Absolutely NO salesperson, peddlers, or solicitors whatsoever.

THIS! MEANS! YOU!"

I still had assholes knocking on my door, but at least I had an excuse to be curt and rude.

NOGODZ20's avatar

We had a NO SOLICITORS sign at the front door of my parents house. We still got JWs come calling.

I always answered the door. I told them I was an atheist. They left without a word.

Lynn James's avatar

Wow. That really worked? I tried that a couple of times and they just drilled down harder trying to convince me I needed Jesus. I was still on my long path to deconversion back then and found these conversations distressing.

The only effective measure, for me at least, was to just slam the door as soon as they mentioned Jesus or produced a Bible.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Different JW groups came around several times. Sometimes with kids (human shields), other times not. Apparently, there's no communication within the organization.

I was always polite and simply told them of my atheism. Each time they went away, no argument.

Guerillasurgeon's avatar

"No solicitations"? There's your problem right there. A big no proselytising! Probably would have done a lot better. 😁 Certainly in NZ where solicitation usually means active prostitution of some sort. Maybe they were missionaries from the Commonwealth. 😁

Bill Lawrence's avatar

This is very useful and long overdue. No one has to major in things like this; they just have to take the class. I predict that that class will be oversubscribed.

XJC's avatar

"I majored in Atheism with a minor in Women's and Gender Studies." Why won't anybody hire me?

NOGODZ20's avatar

"Why won't anybody hire me?"

Sounds like the lament of Liberty University grads.

XJC's avatar

Yes, there are only so many jobs available at Fox News and Breitbart. It's competitive and people tend to stay there their entire careers. Only a select few will leave to work in the Trump Administration, or for Speaker Mike Johnson or Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (<--see smile).

NOGODZ20's avatar

I imagine the vast majority of LU grads wind up working in an industry that can be summed up in 6 words: "Would you like fries with that?"

Holytape's avatar

Or "We don't talk about Pastor Mike"

Holytape's avatar

I majored in Christian Flood Geology and the Bible, why won't people hire me......

cdbunch's avatar

You don't want to live in Kentucky? Or just don't want to tithe your salary back to your employer?

Holytape's avatar

I am not from Kentucky, but how do you tithe three 'possum and a mason jar of moonshine, which I believe is the minimum wage in Kentucky.

cdbunch's avatar

I had a possum get into my bedroom about 11:30p a couple of months ago. Apparently 24-hour wildlife removal means you leave a voicemail and they get back to you after sunup. It took me 6 tries to get some one-man operation to come out at 1a to get the creature out of my bedroom so I could go to sleep.

Lynn James's avatar

Wow, I had forgotten about this incident... this was a loooong time ago....

A very small possum got into my house back in the 90's. At the time I had three cats, and they had cornered it in my bedroom. I work up to the low growling coming from the possum, and hissing and spitting coming from the cats. I grabbed a plastic mixing bowl from the kitchen, slapped it over him, and scooted the bowl along the floor to the back door, where I shoved it over the threshold and out into the yard, bowl and all. Of course, the damned thing had urinated during the process, so at 3 a.m., I was boiling bleach water and mopping the floor, then following up with lysol, then a hot water rinse.

Threw the mixing bowl away.

Yay, UW

I don’t know anyone in particular that attended or attends Whitewater, but I know all the branches through the state are just as highly regarded as the main campus.

This is important to study, not just because I’m part of the demographic being studied. Because all demographics ought to be understood in a profound way. Even if you don’t like the secular worldview, a deeper understanding will allow a more peaceful existence. And it works the other way around as well.

David Graf's avatar

My understanding is that Whitewater is not considered to be in the same group as the Madison or Milwaukee branches.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

You may be right, but I think it depends on the course of study.

Holytape's avatar

It is still decent. But it is second tier. The second level of UW schools used to be geared towards particular fields. Steven's Point was natural resources and forestry. Platteville was engineering. And Whitewater was geared more towards producing teachers. Or at least that was what it was thirty years ago.

RegularJoe's avatar

Linn-Mar school district in Eastern Iowa, the district that Mike Pence visited and name-dropped during the last GOP debate, just elected 4 decent people to our school board. The numbers weren't even close, the 4 theofascist candidates were trounced...in a field of 8 (vote for 4), the highest vote-getter of M4L-backed goons was surpassed by almost a thousand votes by the lowest vote-getter of the good guys.

There is reason to hope.

RegularJoe's avatar

I wouldn't put it past them to make such claims. They've been grousing for some time now about how a coalition of individuals and groups coalesced to recruit and support 4 good candidates for 4 seats, as if that was in any way illegal or unethical.
