So the kingdom is not of this world but these people desperately want power in this world. Got it. Jeez Louise, these people believe in “god” even less than Hitchens.

Why isn’t this glaringly obvious fact not discussed more openly?

They can talk about their loving Jesus and the glorious after-life from now on, but there is nothing the evangelicals crave more than power and control on this earthly plane. Power few groups would be more ill-equipped to exercise.

Utopia looks fine from the ivory tower. An applied utopia is successful when populated by volunteers. People who are inspired to be happy within the restrictions, defined as freedom, enforced via the utopian lens. Utopian systems that come into power through a political war against the genpop will end in violent revolution. As in the Tommy musical - https://youtu.be/hXp0O8TeowI?si=XY9K9gOo76ipzmz5

Woodland Park is a suburb (or bedroom community) of Colorado Springs. So, there’s going to be Focus on the Family and the Air Force Academy influence, Colorado Springs is known for being unduly biased toward Christianity.

The loss of teachers and other staff should have woken up the residents, maybe it has, but they might not be feeling the pinch yet. Are there other candidates running against them with decent morals and values? Talking with my mother this weekend about her recent primary and she complained that as a democratic voter in Tennessee, she had only two questions whereas the republican ballot was two sided. Meaning, there isn’t competition for the seats and that is why the Republicans have been able to take over. There needs to be people to run against these Christian Nationalist candidates. The solution to this problem has many prongs, but one important one is to give the voters an alternative. Hopefully Woodland Park has some.

Congrats, hopefully her experiences were positive. Has she made Eagle yet?

I'm getting a bit fed up with our troop. I have mixed feelings about scouting overall right now. I had a great time when I was in it and I know the Org has had lots of problems, but they do seem to be working on it. However, fees are through the roof, which is pushing out volunteers (at least in our troop) and the district only seems to be moving from one fundraiser to the next. The troop we're in now does a really good job with getting young scouts up to a certain point, then things seem to lose steam. I can't even count how many events they've had planned, then cancelled last minute (mostly camping, some weather related, but not always) My oldest got Eagle a while back, the youngest could by the end of the year. I can't say I'll miss it when we get out.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

She has not gotten her Eagle yet, she has a couple more merit badges and she’s working on a project idea still. I think she wants to make bee houses for a local park.

The day was good, she was excited when she got home and they gave her a personalized proclamation all framed and everything.

It’s tough with a troop and district that don’t step up. We have some cancelled events because of a lack of interest, either from the scouts or from adult volunteers. My hubs usually tries to fill in when there are gaps, but he is only one person and he’s trying to wean off since the kids are nearly done and no one seems to be stepping up.

Good luck with the final eagle. My daughter might be done by the end of the year also. She might stick around for the high adventures for the next couple years since her brother got to do all of them.

Wow. I knew there were insular communities like Woodland Park in the Deep South, but Colorado? Yeah, apparently so. The worst part about all of this is that, if Wommack gets his way, undoing that will be next to impossible, once he gets his hands on the controls. About the only thing I can think of to counter this would be a massive voter education drive to inform the people of Woodland Park that their rights are about to be usurped by a Christian radical.

The $64 question is: can those citizens be made to care?

Remember, this neck of the woods is the land of "Handsy" Bobert, Columbine, and Aurora. MRFF might not be based there but its president is a graduate of the AF Academy. Colorado is one of those states that is polka dotted. It's like Washington State, Seattle is a blue stronghold but Spokanistan is deep red.

Expand full comment
Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

What you need to remember is that in the USA, the rural areas are generally super conservative and the urban areas are liberal, and the burns are where the two mix and swing. Colorado Springs is not an urban city, mostly because it has two military bases. Spokane is similar even though it only has the one military base. Seattle is surrounded by urban areas, it’s a sprawling city that runs all the way to Tacoma and nearly Olympia, where Spokane is surrounded by farms and open spaces. Just like Denver sprawls across the front range, and Colorado Springs does not.

Anyways, all the states really are purple of some shade, where the population is more dense, it’s more blue and as it spreads out a bit it’s red.

Based on the people I've known personally who see Jesus as the answer to every question, the results here are entirely predictable. The Christo-fascist right never anticipates consequences, and simply assumes the public will passively submit to their rule. It is up to the people of this community to organize, and vote these people out. It's only going to be a matter of time before they begin losing teachers, which they will blame on everyone but themselves.

Wow, absolutely horrible. Christian Nationalism is a danger, not a help. This information needs to get a lot of publicity so voters will know what is going on. People just don't realize the importance of knowing the issues and getting out to vote in all elections. A religious group taking complete control of politics is totally a bad idea. They will force their religious views on everyone. Totally wrong.

Btw I had a close encounter of the worst kind with some LDS nut jobs yesterday. When they showed up, I mentioned that they ignored my no soliciting sign, they said they weren't soliciting (sure they were, soliciting religious nonsense) but wanted to talk to me about Jesus. I told them I was an atheist, there is no god and they were living a lie. As I was slamming the door, I could see one of them starting to argue. Ain’t got time for that nonsense.

And then they imposed a gag order and fired teachers who criticized the moves publicly."

That behavior right there is exactly the sort of thing I've come to associate with the current right wing Christian conservative: When the truth isn't working out, hide or lie about the actual situation as needed to gain power or accomplish whatever the goal du jour is. Truly, the sheer ruthlessness from a group of people claiming to be more moral and virtuous than most is breathtaking for its gall if nothing else. These are not the actions of a group of loving people attempting to do their best for their local community, these are the actions of a group of power-maddened fanatics looking for targets to destroy.

They clearly do not care one bit about promoting their brand of morals. They just want to see the world burn. Some of them are in it for the money, others have been sold a bill of goods that tells them the world is an evil place and ONLY through burning it down will anyone be 'saved'. The proof is in the fact that they take over school boards and city councils to de-fund as much as possible and then spend any money left on things to benefit only them.
