So the Christian community who, up to the above-cited announcement, were quite happy to support the Urban Christian Academy, show their true colors when confronted with a school that believes in diversity and support thereof.

And we have yet another day that ends in "Y".

StochasticTerrorist's avatar

You forget, it was that very same "Practice What You Preach" message that caused Jesus to come to a very sticky end, instead of Him just founding God's Kingdom on Earth, and making irrelevant all the dope-smoking, acid-dropping, subsequent, 'Elephant in the Room' apocalypses.

Maybe Christians HAVE learned, and just are keeping The Secret from the rest of us heathens?

Black Hole and DM mourner's avatar

You will recognize them by their hate. It's not like black children need an education after all 🙄

StochasticTerrorist's avatar

These are the same people who think a state that controls fiscal and monetary policy needs to have a balanced budget, with their own socialist programs being off-bounds for tinkering.

It's all a Zero Sum Game to these Middle Class drones (until it affects their perks), with education being something that would raise The Lower Classes expectations too high, at the expense of the Middle Class' privilege. That's too high as in far too close for comfort, in spite of the entire economy going knowledge-based, and with the Middle Class' existing perks being staffed and funded by that knowledge-based economy.

cdbunch's avatar

A balanced budget doesn't allow for a "rainy day" fund. Or a disaster relief fund. For that, they suck at the teats of the other states.

You can only borrow so much money until your revenue is completely consumed in making the minimum payments on your loans. And that's when the Universe gives you mold in your ductwork.

We keep coming back to this with christianity; the cruelty is the point.

StochasticTerrorist's avatar

It's the True Believers way of justifying a cull of the unprofitable members of the Tribe, based on what their god told them, mostly through 'rational' extension of their holy documents.

Now, it is possible the money withdrawn was repurposed to supporting an even more progressive program, like supporting an even more inclusive school, but what are the odds on that?

Especially now that their Tesla stock has tanked.

Len Koz's avatar

I'm sure it will happen. When the Greeks reckon time by the kalends.

Whitney's avatar

Well, I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise when the Christian community uses that 'cancel culture' thing to close a school, should it?

This is yet another reason why so many churches can't keep butts in the pews anymore, by the way. The rest of us see this behavior and think 'Ouch, I don't want to be associated with people like that' and start avoiding Christians and their beliefs. Decent people usually recognize that the LGBTQ+ community isn't hurting anyone and just want the same rights as most everyone else; the fact that so many in the Christian community can't see that speaks to the sort of prejudice Christians really want to practice.

Joan the Dork's avatar

Show of hands... who's surprised by this? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

larry parker's avatar

A little surprised that the school would make the affirming statement in the first place.

larry parker's avatar

The school was infested with cooties. The donors had no other choice.

OT- Well, I've officially identified the worst thing about having Covid while vaccinated: realizing that my stash is worthless for the duration because I'm out of edibles, can't buy more until I'm not contagious anymore, and if I tried to smoke anything right now that would only make things worse.

Otherwise, it feels like a bad cold, and even though I only got my first symptoms two days ago I'm already feeling a little better. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘶𝘶𝘶𝘶, 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢.

When I had Covid (while vaxxed, tho no idea if that mattered) my worst thing was “frequent urination”, a rare but not unknown symptom. I had to pee — VERY urgently — every 45-60 minutes for 36 straight hours. Never much, but OMG, the need was urgent.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Just now seeing this. Glad to hear you're on the mend.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

I noticed that the Christian funding seems to be lopsided in the bigoted sects favor. There was plenty of money coming from the more fundamentalist churches, but not so much from the more progressive churches.

I always thought, despite seeing plenty of evidence that Christianity was super bigoted on this blog, that the cruel folks were in the minority. But this evidence is starting to point to the opposite, the kind Christians are fewer. I hope not. But financially speaking, hate pays.

What's with the money-grubbing by xtians? Their savior told them NOT to store up treasures for themselves on Earth but in Heaven. They were also told to set their minds on things above, not earthly things.

Do they really think they get to "take it with them?"

I don't know, they seem real hung-up on trying to find symbolic predictions in John's hallucination.

Joan the Dork's avatar

They're just doing their part to get everyone else into heaven- since suffering is holy, if they can make everybody else dirt poor and miserable, that's a guaranteed ticket upstairs! They're really being 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳 generous by hoarding all that wealth for themselves!

Curiously, this essentially the Philosophy of Life aboard a US submarine: "Life on a submarine at sea is miserable.

Only says that there are some 'philanthropic' Christians who will fund an apparently religion-based school in that area, but who won't fund an aggressively LGBTQ-friendly religions-based school in that area.

That's if you also choose to ignore things like changes in the economic situation for the time-in-question as well as don't find out who it was who withdrew how much support.

According to their thinking, even the merest tolerance is the equivalent of forcing children to participate.

Joan the Dork's avatar

As I like to say, "understanding" sounds a lot like "defeat" to people who are used to standing 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 others. Conservative thinking treats everything as a zero-sum game where in order for one person or group to gain, another must lose; it never occurs to them that we could be making things better for everyone equally.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Homophobia from the Religion of Love.

Hey, Christians: Here's everything your savior had to say about LGBTQs...

MATTHEW: "_________________________________________________________________"

MARK: "______________________________________________________________________"

LUKE: "_______________________________________________________________________"

JOHN: "______________________________________________________________________"

Not one bit of condemnation. On the other hand, he was quite put out with religious hypocrites and those who claimed to follow him but didn't do what he said.

There's a Century multiplex where I live but it's way down in Federal Way and takes forever to get to, so I skip it.

Would someone PLEASE reopen the Cinerama at 4th and Lenora downtown? 3 years is long enough to have waited.

Mega CGR, it's just a 30 minutes walk away and they allow me to bring DM's homemade popcorn :)

Guerillasurgeon's avatar

Our closest cinema collapsed in an earthquake. I'm not sure if it's backup yet to be Honest.

cdbunch's avatar

Yeah, slashdot posted it under the title of AMC to going to a movie more like choosing a seat on an airline (or some variation thereof) Makes me wonder who's going to be the Southwest of the movie industry.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Joke's on them. I see all the big budget films at the Meridian 16 theater. The one with the fancy cushy recliner seats.

Len Koz's avatar

I have no allegiance to any theater chain but the nearest nice theaters to me are a couple Regals that also have those lovely recliners. If I have to spend upwards of $15 for a seat at the movies, I require a seat I can lay in like my couch at home.

NOGODZ20's avatar

That Meridian theater I spoke of is part of the Regal chain. Footrests and swing trays.

(They also have 3D and 4DX)

Zorginipsoundsor's avatar

Kinda hard for me to avoid. There is an AMC four miles east of me, a CMX 5 miles west of me, and a Regal 4.2 miles north of me. Would you believe in a city of 260,000, there are only two theaters for a total of 22 screens‽ The Regal is in a different city.

NOGODZ20's avatar

There's another Regal (Thorton Plaza) that's a quick light rail ride away in the Northgate area of my city.

Supposedly, the Meridian 16 is going to be closing down. Nobody knows when. Hopefully, I'll be able to see the new "Ant-Man" film before it does.

StochasticTerrorist's avatar

'Real' theaters do it, already.

It's up to the audience to show if this is going to be profitable for AMC beyond the "Fool me once" stage.

Be supportive! This is a Wodehouse Nodder's "2023 Holiday Bonus".

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

Real theaters also have completely different sort of seating layouts that have been culturally and historically used to separate the classes. Movie theaters are designed to create as similar an experience as possible no matter where you sit. Especially if they’ve been built in the last ten years.

AMC is shooting themselves in the foot unless they have a monopoly in an area. Luckily I do not have this chain in my area and the options I do have do not yet do this.

Whitney's avatar

I kinda feel like I should point out that whole 'watch it from home' thing. I find I like being able to pause, change the volume to non-headache inducing, and drink a beer if I want to. Having a monopoly in an area may not help AMC as much as they think.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

One of the options in my area is called Flix Brewhouse. Every seat is a big cushy rocker with a table across the row and space for the waitstaff to pass by without blocking the screen and you can have full meals with beer, wine, or cocktails while you watch the movie.

Watching from home is always a great option too. Pausing the movies is the only benefit Flix doesn’t have.

Zorginipsoundsor's avatar

Another advantage of watching from home is cc/subtitles. Sometimes the background music or the special effects are too loud for me to hear the dialogue.

cdbunch's avatar

THIS. I watch everything with subtitles. It doesn't take much noise to render me unable to parse what people are saying. (I hate sitting in the back seat) It's also helpful when they're speaking British.

cdbunch's avatar

Several movie theaters around here let you have a beer while watching the movie. One of them is called the Alamo Drafthouse.

Len Koz's avatar

I saw a movie there once. When I realized just how much I had spent on bar service during a movie I realized frequenting Alamo Drafthouse would quickly lead to me going broke.

cdbunch's avatar

Yes, but for those that like beer, I hear it's a lovely ride.

NOGODZ20's avatar

I understand the pandemic caused them to close several of their theaters in different states and forced them to declare bankruptcy.

cdbunch's avatar

That happened to a lot of theaters, but they are still in business and apparently expanding to Boston and Birmingham

StochasticTerrorist's avatar

Sorry, but the AMC theaters hereabouts DEFINITELY have better areas, regardless, as will any theater. Unless the laws of physics have been suspended, screens get small/don't fill the visual field, the audience in front intrudes, access to exits and entrances is better, and audio spacial fidelity is better.

It's the reason why small audience events, like simulcasts, have areas where people bunch up in my experience.

It's ALSO the reason why buying tickets online let you choose your seats, only NOW there will be a charge if the seats you choose are in the location people really like best.

Even real theaters admit this with different pricing for orchestra, wings, etc. on the main floor.

At the Kennedy Center, it used to be a real bargain with SRO tickets because you had all the advantages of less expensive orchestra seats with the small issue of standing (which was not an issue for much of Da Yout, actually). I preferred it many times to the orchestra tickets people dropped off when they left for-good at intermissions.

Len Koz's avatar

I saw that last night. Sure, that's a great way to get more people to come back to movie theaters.

Zorginipsoundsor's avatar

For me the; moral of the story is, don't see a movie at AMC after 4 p.m.

Black Hole and DM mourner's avatar

I promise to not go there at all 😁

Guerillasurgeon's avatar

Me too. The added cost of airfares makes it somewhat un-economic. Actually these days, the sweet spot for me is between the left and right doodads of my earphones. Last time I went to a movie theatre the sound was so loud I felt like shouting out "I'm not deaf!"

StochasticTerrorist's avatar

Live by the Bigots, Die by the Bigots.

They are not gonna change, either. Religion is nearly impervious to refutation, by design and 2000 years of Continuous Improvement. Especially true with the kind of people who prolly ponied up that $300,000+ gap with money that is proof to them that their 'god' approves of their souls and their own, pernicious True Faith.

Every notice It's a Wonderful Life was obviously fiction because the 'twist at the end' WAS a twist, and it didn't require any change in 'deeply religious' beliefs as fundamental as the ones at this school?

This loss of funding is as predictable as Thomas Sowell's historic defense of Scrooge, decades old and steeped in malicious religious 'Chosen' beliefs.
