And the Church won't understand that. It is the position of the church that the quest for shared humanity means all of humanity conforming to them.

The ONLY ideas the Church seems to care about, at least as regards this particular incident, are its own. One wonders if the Archdiocese of New York thinks it's still in the 16th century and can superimpose its will on anything and anyone and not face blowback or criticism.

I think it's time for the producers at the Connelly Theater to open a production of Do Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up! That will tell everyone whether the Church has any semblance of a sense of humor or whether they want to insist on being the scolds and buzzkills that they seem wont to be.

The Catholic Church doesn't like other ideas than their own. Shutting down a theatre to stop the exchange of idea's is probably what the new leader wants.

Why does a religion own so much property that isn’t dedicated to church services or charity? The RCC owns far too much property in the USA, considering it is a foreign nation. All the hospitals and schools and just property are money making schemes for them and opportunities to exert control over people’s lives, people who are not Catholics, who choose not to be a part of their religion. Now they are even interfering in the free expression of artists.

They plead poverty when they’re expected to actually do charity, or when they’re being held accountable for crimes against children and women. But they have plenty of cash to own large buildings in New York City, one of the most expensive cities for real estate in the world.

Who is surprised by the church choosing the heartless option.

I think eventually, that day will come. What with the churches owning non-churchy businesses and dabbling in politics, sooner rather than later is fine with me.

Exactly, I didn’t mention them, but I was thinking about that the whole time too. The Mormons are just a business with an authoritarian kink pretending to be a religion.

The funny thing is, the Mormons are exactly what Scientology claims to be, but they lie. They lie about membership numbers, they lie to their big donors, they lie about everything. The numbers don't add up, but the Mormons are for real; huge membership, lots of property, temples everywhere.

Scientology wishes it were Mormonism!

The more the Church tries to impose their beliefs on the public, the more they alienate people. Like most denominations the Catholic Church is hemorrhaging members, and distilling itself down to the true believers who live in a world beyond the reach of reason. They have put themselves in the curious position of reducing their influence by trying to exercise it. Given how the Church dealt with pedophile priests before those horrors became public, their moral posturing is selective to say the least.

Expand full comment

What morals? They don't have any.

They certainly demonstrate the disconnect between religion and morality.

Expand full comment

So now the Catholic church has become so petty as to require approval for plays performed in a space where they once had no problem with controversial material. Considering their waning influence, I suppose they think this is a way for them to flex their atrophying muscles.

What it really is is childish and pathetic. The Catholic Church desperately needs to grow up. The problem of course is they almost certainly won't.

"Why are they doing this now?"

Same reason that a wide variety of Christian, not just Catholic institutions are clamping down, restricting, censoring, centralizing their power, re-asserting their autocracy, choosing to be in control of a bad situation rather than relinquish control and let it be a better situation, and doing exactly what they did to Galileo 391 years ago: He thought that "reason should persuade," but he was up against people who thought that "authority must dominate." The Catholic Church at the time was, just as it is now, losing its grip on its supremacy because at that time the Protestant movement was well underway.

So the answer to why they're doing this now is because Christianity in general is in decline and they're freaking out, so they're scrambling for control. This can be seen as a defensive pulling in rather than as an aggressive extending out. Christian hierarchies are fortifying themselves inside their castles with increasingly autocratic, legalistic, and authoritarian policies and practices.

And that just drives more people out even faster.

I suppose they’ll want to go back to when women couldn’t perform at all and men, or boys rather, would play the parts for women. Or is that considered drag and naughty now? I mean, they’re supportive of the draconian candidate that’s trying, and succeeding, to remove all human rights from women. Pretty soon we won’t be able to have bank accounts or buy our own homes, while we’re chained to abusive husbands because we’re not allowed divorce anymore.

The church decided not to replace the priest because the Archdiocese can now exert its rules on the theater. I hope the church loses enough money to close the school down. Of course, that might even be part of the plan, wouldn’t want women to be educated, now would we. They can shut down the school while blaming the theater group for it. It’s a win/win!

Me too. I was able to open my own first checking account in the summer of 1974, just before I turned 22. I was working as a seasonal for the federal government in rural northeastern Montana, and the sole bank in town was overrun that week with young women from the surrounding area (including from the local rez) wanting to open their own accounts, with no daddy signature, for the first time. One could drink at 18 in Montana, but until the new law, women couldn't have independent checking accounts.
