Not to be a scold but this is why voters need to pay attention to school board elections even if they don’t have children in the schools. School boards are the jumping off point for political careers. We need to fight the bigots in the most local of elections first so we can reduce the number of bigots in higher offices. It’s a long game.

OT: Yesterday a gift package is delivered to the house for my bride, who is now 2 weeks post foot surgery. Fancy chocolate covered strawberries! The box declared that there would be a note inside identifying the giver. No note. There’s a phone number on the label so I call it. I get transferred a few times and finally get to someone who verifies that my bride was indeed the recipient of a gift (yeah, I know). But he cannot tell me the name of the giver without their permission. He takes my number and says he will call me back. About 30 minutes later my bride gets a call from a colleague/friend who tells her she yelled at the company when they called her for failing to include a note. She grew up poor in Russia and takes absolutely no shit from anyone. The company tried to blame her (“you didn’t give us a note”) and that wasn’t true.
I can’t tell you how many times this has happened to me. Some companies don’t have the option to include a note so I always assume they’ll send a packing slip that has the name of the sender but not the cost. Nope. Destined for disappointment 🙄

It may go without saying that, if we dug hard enough into the motivations of the faculty at King George Middle School, we'd find a WHOLE BUNCH of religious zealots who are scared out of their minds that LGBTQ+ kids get the chance to express themselves and maybe even (GASP!!!) discover who they are! A little political geography for those unfamiliar with Virginia. VA used to be reliably Republican. It has become a “leans Dem” state over the last 20-30 years. But, like a lot of states, the urban areas are blue and everything else is red. The part of VA close to Washington DC (known as northern Virginia or NOVA) has boomed in population over the last 30-40 years. Lots of US government employees and people who work for companies with government ties. “Beltway Bandits”. Besides NOVA, there are a few cities of reasonable size (Richmond for example) that are reliably blue.
The county in which this middle school exists is 30-40 miles away from NOVA. It has no municipalities worthy of that term. And that makes all the difference in the world. It’s essentially Alabama. And politically, counties are powerful in VA. School districts are co-terminus with counties. Getting elected to the school board is equivalent to getting elected to the county council except your remit and budget are smaller. The school budget comes from the county council.
The public schools are governmental sub-divisions and as such they cannot pick one religion over another. This is clearly an attempt to backstop the sense of Christian privilege that is so prevalent in our country today. The evangelicals are desperate for this governmental support because they know full-well they are losing the long game.
They haven't deserved any slack in a while, certainly not since Ronald Reagan invited the most radical of their number into the Republican party. They've been trying to legislate their twisted brand of morality from that time to now.
