Organizers of the global event cited safety concerns, threats to civil liberties, and growing hostility toward secular values under the Trump administration
Trump wants to protect against anti-Christian bias, while Christians have incredible bias not just against other religions, but among their staggering number of factions. They always have the expectation of privilege, and assume they have the right to attack those who disagree with them. If they actually had the faith they claim to have, they wouldn't be so easily provoked and threatened.
I think that has a lot of credibility. I've known several people who went church shopping. They attended various churches until they found one telling them what they want to hear, which made them the one true church I guess.
I had a friend who’s parents did that too. One minister had the gall to suggest that the Virgin Birth couldn’t actually physically happen and that freaked them out.
Christianity is the most factionalized religion on the planet, and that should be a far bigger problem for believers than it is. It speaks to a divine being who supposedly willed the universe into existence, but when it came to the most important message imaginable, couldn't make himself understood.
My father was a minister and, IMO, a very honest fellow. But he knew what not to say out loud. (I suppose one could say he lied by omission although I tend to think he believed the fairy tale nonsense but didn’t go on about some of it.)
I remember my mother's church pastor lamenting over people leaving his church for reasons you've mentioned here. People going church shopping to find the one that speaks what they want to hear, not to mention finding the one that doesn't have oppressive rules for the congregation to follow. My late mother left certain churches because they have rules that she couldn't agree with whether it's wearing make-up or wear certain types of clothing. She found the church she likes in the now-defunct Northgate Wesleyan Church where she stayed for many years until the place closed down and she relocated to another church where she stayed there until the day she passed away.
Your mother certainly had the right to choose a church where she felt welcome. I come from the opposite extreme. A family made up of people all half again as Catholic as the Pope. Not a one of whom knew the first thing about the horrid history of that institution. They tended to stick with it until the day they died. Not sure what they got out of it, because they never seemed to feel very good about themselves, but that tends to be a Catholic trait as well.
He doesn't want to protect against anti-Christian bias. He wants to promote Christian privilege. "anti-Christian bias" is being redefined as "not getting special treatment".
Something like this was bound to happen in the light of the Trump administrations utter determination to superimpose what amounts to a white supremacist, anti-DEI attitude on the whole of the United States. I also can't help but notice that American Atheists is moving their annual meeting to Canada as well and for much the same reason.
Trump wants to go back to the days of Leave It To Beaver and Father Knows Best, and that brand of atavism cannot have a positive outcome for this country.
He wants to go back to those days because he thinks that those sitcoms were documentaries. Nothing but white people, everyone was deferential to authority, and all problems were simple fixes that were resolved quickly. And he thhinks that ruling America and ultimately the world with an iron fist will accomplish that.
Like the idea that America Atheist includes all 35 American countries and not just the Untied States all are Americans.
The imperialistic MAGA cult leads everyone to believe "America" is a country not the land mass with two continents. IMO one reason why it and the Christian nationalist are popular in the United States.
I've already had a full-on nervous breakdown complete with uncontrollable crying and I'm not even *in* America. I was just fool enough to be following the news a bit too closely. 😣
A country whose official policy is to prohibit non-white foreigners from entry, prohibit anyone critical of the regime in power, and to (𝘥𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰 if not 𝘥𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘳𝘦) declare religious beliefs that are not Christianity to be unwelcome is not the place you want to have a global gathering of humanists. Most humanists will be critical of Trump, many will not be white, and none of them will be Christian. This is the same sort of action I would have expected of the group in 1979 had they been planning a conference for 1980 in Teheran. It is the same reason the Olympics and the World Cup are reconsidering whether or not to come here.
A boycott is not capitulation. A boycott is a statement to the target that they are doing something very, very wrong.
Their action is also very considerate of both international and domestic attendees whose backgrounds might fall into conflict with Trump's attempt at ethnic cleansing.
It's a little like deciding Geneva might not be a safe place to meet when John Calvin assumed the mantle of defending orthodoxy. Wise not to take his assurances for granted.
"America is under occupation" Agreed, sadly North and South America have been fully indoctrinated by Christianity for hundreds of years.
Go to some of the bigger countries in Central and South America. One will see Christian relics, crosses statues, Gods and Jesuses everywhere keeping the fear alive. God Bless America, MAGA?
Congratulations and many thanks to Ottawa, Canada and Humanist Canada for stepping in; I hope everyone enjoys this event.
So far as I'm concerned, the original plan to have this event in the US was in fact in a theocracy; entirely too many of the current administration are Christian authoritarians with axes to grind for the US to be anything else at the moment. The worst part may well be that the average Christian seems to think this administration's behavior is a wonderful thing and 'making' everyone be Christian will be good for everyone. As a result, the average Christian isn't speaking out against the excesses they're seeing, instead they honestly think such problems are a wonderful idea. Dealing with the fallout from that attitude is going to take years even if Trump has a heart attack and kicks it today.
Aside from security concerns, and they are serious, drumpster is really running your country like one of his business, right into the ground.
1000 may seem a small number but it adds to the tourists who gave up on visiting the USA. Plus, the event may last 3 days but it's usual to arrive the day before and to leave one or two days after, or more if you plan to visit. That make about 6 days at minima, of lost revenues for the venue, the hotels, the restaurants, the caterers, furniture rental etc... It's the domino effect of a capitalist economy.
I don’t blame them. How many stories are we seeing of people being detained during their vacation to the USA? Stopped at the airport on their way home, picked up as they land? Enough to take note, and that’s only the ones we hear about. How many are happening without making the news?
It may be tempting to do it here and use the administration’s attacks to gain sympathy, but it’s not kind to use people as bait. And that’s what it would be. Knowing someone would be detained or worse, and inviting folks who would be targeted is baiting the administration.
I think the more events like this are moved, and the bigger the event the better, the more pressure the administration will feel. Trump is focused on image, that is all he cares about, sticking his name on things, making everything gold, having a big ole parade to show off his subjects’ loyalty, you bet he will be upset if international events change their venues. Hitler got the Olympics, but the Olympics should move so they don’t encourage Trump. That would be the ultimate insult. The World Cup should move, Trump may not care so much for soccer/football, but being snubbed will still hurt him. Golf tournaments would be truly insulting, but alas, he has far too much influence for that to happen.
I wouldn't be surprised if FIFA is already taking action to pull the World Cup out of the US. The Olympics would be a LOT more difficult, but I wouldn't put it past the IOC.
Oh, if the IOC cancels holding events in the U.S., Agent Orange will just claim that he canceled them FIRST. He'll demonize the entire Olympic concept as a left-wing, commie-pinko-woke-lib'ral-conspiracy to let rapists, drug dealers, Muslims, and spies into Trumpistan to poison our blood and undermine our sacred freedom to be racist, nationalist pigs.
I searched "teams cances tours o9ver border concerns." Several photos showed up, one showing the US doing DNA testng at the Mexico border. I clicked and it cme up for a second and turned white. I saw the heqadline before it disappeared. Why do I feel like the French Resistance during WWII?
There were news reports of this a few weeks back. One Canadian team had its entire US tour canceled over concerns about border crossings. Music acts are cancelling.
I suspect there are a number of events, both athletic and otherwise, that are going to find themselves vanishing off of US-sponsored schedules. The United States has just made itself exceptionally unpopular mostly thanks to that cheeto-faced ass fuck.
I love this country. I just hate the ignorant fools who are attempting to run it right now. The faster they can be kicked out of office, arrested, tried, convicted, and imprisoned, the happier I'll be.
Trump screamed up and down about going after immigrants from south of the border bringing drugs and gangs into the country. Then he turned right around and brought 17 family members of drug cartels into the US as part of a deal with Ovidio Guzman Lopez, the son of El Chapo and the former head of the Sinaloa Cartel. OGL is one of the CURRENT heads of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Trump, as always, shows more than one orange face.
Words spewing out of his anus mouth are meaningless. They have zero value and only serve to create chaos. Mute that fucker and pay attention only to what he does.
Humanism has a much stronger voice for peace in this world than any religion, especially Christianity, although all three Abrahamic religions leave a disgusting and violent history in their wake.
I live in Canada where the people refrain from voting for avowed fascists, and politicians, most of them anyway, respect the Canadian constitution - a document unencumbered by a useless and obsolete 2nd amendment. Ottawa will be thrilled to host this conference!
"We will welcome elected officials, business and civic leaders, artists, scholars, and on-the-ground activists and organizers to lend their expertise to these discussions."
I was recently in an argument with a family member (who is Christian, raised Baptist) when trying to explain this isn’t a left or right issue, but an up and down one. Their answer was no, it’s good vs evil…I’m really not sure how anyone begins to break down this level of indoctrination or if it’s even possible. Perhaps it’s irrelevant as the greedy powers of the machine are just too great.
Then frame it as good v evil. Ask them if it is good or evil to send children to places where they will suffer just because their parents weren't born here. Ask them if it is good or evil to stop people from being able to go to the doctor just because they are unable to find a job that provides health insurance. Ask them if it is good or evil to force a corpse to give birth. Ask them if it is good or evil to actively discriminate against YOU for not believing the same way they do. Support with documentation (you can find plenty here) and Matthew 25:31-46.
It might not get through to them completely, but it may give them pause.
That’s good advice. I’ve been slowly working on this little bits at a time (when others around me say to just not engage at all). The amount of effort involved is all consuming and extremely hurtful.
I have not read it. But it might be helpful moving forward in our new reality and maybe make a difference in how our reality is shaped. This might help you work with these people and move them toward empathy.
It was called “Dream at the Top of Your Lungs” at the Broom Street Theater in Madison WI. It was written as we were rehearsing it. Broom Street is an experimental theater, so they might do some well known plays (with a twist), they generally do unique plays, or plays from lesser know playwrights or locals.
Aussie here. I visited America back in the day and loved it. Beautiful place, with really lovely, welcoming people. Nobody made an issue of the fact that I was a foreigner other than to happily exclaim "oh, you're Australian!" or to ask "where is that accent from?" with friendly curiosity. Now? I'm a woman, single, childless, autistic, queer, and an atheist. All things the new regime hates. I am out and out *frightened* by the idea of going there now, and I'm afraid for my friends who (unwisely, in my opinion) have recently visited.
That is what Trump and his cronies have done to America's reputation.
Jesus fucking Christ. I know the reputation of the US has taken a much-deserved hit. I too felt the stigma of being childless before I met my husband late in life. Being able to claim his children from a previous marriage felt like a vindication of sorts, although I could not articulate why at first.
I was always "on the fence" about whether I wanted children or not (after realizing how abusive my own uber-religious childhood had been, and wondering if I would be able to raise children without resorting to the abuse I experienced) and I had always heard that "If you are not absolutely SURE you want children, don't have any, because you are signing up for an 18 year commitment, at the very least."
These factors led me to delay having children. I had single friends who were raising children as the result of divorce, and I saw their personal and financial day-to-day struggles. I applaud them for their dogged perseverance, even as I envy them for the children they are now so proud of raising without any significant help, financial or otherwise, from their ex-husbands, and from the government that even back then, was of was of no help what-so-fucking-ever.
I understand everyone's fear of visiting the United States. I am now afraid of living here, and I was fucking BORN here. I would like to immigrate to another country, but one of us is having problems getting a passport (we have appealed, but still haven't heard anything in months).
The first time I read about JD Vance's dumbass screed against "childless cat ladies" who "have no stake in our country's future," I wanted to beat the goddamned living shit out of his ass. How dare this mother-fucking butt-furred asswipe define who does and who doesn't deserve to "have a stake" in our country's future?
These factors have led me to regard my "married with step-children" status as "accidental camouflage" which I hate with a passion. I know intellectually that it shouldn't matter, I am quite fond of my step-children, and I know there are people who don't have such camouflage, and it shouldn't matter for them either, yet it does. And it bothers the living daylights out of me.
And, I must confess, I am not entirely sure where I am going with this comment. I have had entirely too much vodka over the last couple of days since the bombs started dropping.
Take care folks, and if anyone can clarify things for me please do not hesitate to do so.
I confess I am not sure where I am going with this as I have had entirely too much vodka in the last two days
Childless dog lady here. I don't regret not having children, nor being single at 44. I have a nephew and a niece, and I am worried for their future, so yes, I have an emotional stake in the way my country is going. Your vice can go fuck himself with an AK-47.
*hugs* I'd have turned to drink were I in your place too. :(
How can someone not have a stake in the future of THE COUNTRY THEY LIVE IN? Oh that's right; the fucker doesn't think women count unless they're pumping out babies.
And then there's all those powerful men who have DOZENS of kids by multiple partners they don't do anything to parent, yet are held up as champions of family values! Oh, and they usually have rape allegations and/or convictions into the bargain. The hypocrisy is just vile.
I would love to return to the USA from the UK to visit parts I've not yet seen - but there are just enough horror stories about ICE detaining innocent travellers in prison cells to stop me. The Guardian newspaper here had an article by an american who said she wanted to go on a vacation within the USA, but feared flying with her wife and their small daughter as the wife, a US citizen is of Palestinian origin. Imagine one or both of those parents being forcibly separated from their child at an airport. Mind you, I was in Austria last week. A safe country? The day I left, three hikers were killed by lightning strikes in the part of the Alps I'd hiked in for the previous 6 days!
Good grief! Well don't worry, Australia is very safe and no I am not a bunch of snakes in a trenchcoat using my spider hands to type this, why would you ever think that?
I’m with Larry Parker. I wouldn’t be here in the US if I didn’t live here. No one outside the country should come here to visit unless the thrill of the possible danger is enticing. I, on the other hand, prefer not to be in some shithole detention facility, though who knows if that’s my destiny anyway. Fuck Trump.
When he's finished playing dictator, Chump should have another book ghost-written. It'll be a self-help guide, titled: "How to Lose Allies and Kill an Empire 𝘍𝘢𝘴𝘵!"
It'll be exactly two pages long. Page one will have his picture on it. Page two will read: "Put me in charge."
Posted this before, but here goes: true story - a coworker once arrived late, very upset and pissed as hell because.....
wait for it...wait for it....
She had spotted a freshly killed deer by the side of the road ("the blood hadn't even congealed yet!") and rushed back home to grab her husband's field-dressing kit from his truck, but when she got back to the kill, "somebody else had beat me to it!"
The boss was not only understanding, but commiserating with her.
That is so true. Christian always go to violence when they (Christians) don’t get their way or they feel their religion is being questioned, criticized, or mocked.
If their (Christians) faith was as strong as they keep telling us (nonbelievers), they (Christians) wouldn’t need to resort to violence to “avenge” their religion.
I think about you quite often during these times, along with other friends of mine who feel the same way. I worry for their safety and yours. And I hate what this country has become.
Larry Niven postulated, years ago, a religion where people got together and told each other comforting lies...
Or maybe, y'know, just didn't care enough to bother.
Yeah, he's kind of an absentee father.
They don't believe in parthenogenesis, but the transubstantiation is fine!
Two six-syllable words. Kudos !
😂
Wow, a surprisingly honest minister!
My father was a minister and, IMO, a very honest fellow. But he knew what not to say out loud. (I suppose one could say he lied by omission although I tend to think he believed the fairy tale nonsense but didn’t go on about some of it.)
Right? I give that minister props for believing that, but perhaps not so much for admitting it, at least out loud. Lol

Exactly! The religious right sees anything interfering with their expectation of privilege as persecution.
He’d have more credibility if he hadn’t tear-gassed a church for a 20-second photo op holding a Bible upside down.

Not enough bricks. One ton is about a pallet's worth. Twenty pallets for just one truckload, and one truckload isn't enough.
Love to see that. Can they use real bricks?
Like the idea that America Atheist includes all 35 American countries and not just the Untied States all are Americans.
The imperialistic MAGA cult leads everyone to believe "America" is a country not the land mass with two continents. IMO one reason why it and the Christian nationalist are popular in the United States.

[Now, the Christian Nationalism and “America First” actions of Republicans have made some visitors leery of coming to the U.S., even for short trips.]
Probably for the best. ICE is out of control.
And they've already said they plan to move citizens from allied countries to Gitmo. No telling what they'd do.
In fact, in general, I would advise any person who was thinking of visiting the United States to change their travel plans.
America is under occupation from a hostile domestic power.
And to think that trillions of $$$ have been spent because of all these so called external enemies even to this day.
Perhaps the US is a modern Rome as often suggested and is imploding 🤔
Just as in Rome, reloigious hatred and superstition is leading the fall.

Yep. This morning’s newspaper said Trump claimed a ceasefire while the airstrikes continued. All this demented old man knows is lying.
Trump thinks that if he says it, it happens. Sorry [not sorry] Donnie, but it don't work that way.

I think anyone can attend. They don't have a registration page up yet, but iirc, it's a little pricy.

It isn’t safe here for anybody. The Christo-fascist/Christian-Zionist government takeover has been carefully plotted over the past few decades.
During the last play I was in, the script discussed this book and the author as a way to deal with folks who are Trump supporters.

I have not read it. But it might be helpful moving forward in our new reality and maybe make a difference in how our reality is shaped. This might help you work with these people and move them toward empathy.
Only if you are interested.
What was the play?
It was called “Dream at the Top of Your Lungs” at the Broom Street Theater in Madison WI. It was written as we were rehearsing it. Broom Street is an experimental theater, so they might do some well known plays (with a twist), they generally do unique plays, or plays from lesser know playwrights or locals.
It is more than difficult dealing with family members in the cult, Linda. Sorry to say that I have also been unable to break through.
♥️
Maybe with a baseball bat and a lobotomy.
I think I need a lobotomy to work through this.
And I hope it goes off in the process!!! 😂🤣😂🤣😂
That's the idea.
Currently snuggling with my pet rats! Agreed; he can go screw himself.

I know you don't watch French movies but .................
The only way to make me watch anything French, that is not a documentary, is to have Alexandre Astier in it.
Vive la revolution!
Just googled him. ooo la la.
In a good or bad way ?
*hugs* I'd have turned to drink were I in your place too. :(
How can someone not have a stake in the future of THE COUNTRY THEY LIVE IN? Oh that's right; the fucker doesn't think women count unless they're pumping out babies.
TELL me about it. While childless men have NEVER been questioned about their stake in America's future.
It can even be printed in Sharpie.
The MAGAts would buy it in a heartbeat.
They'd buy a live Claymore mine and mount its spicy side facing the living room sofa if it had his picture on the front.
Well, magas are not known for their intelligence, expertise, or skill. Except knowing how to have sex with barnyard animals and how to cook roadkill.
How to cook roadkill....
SMH.
Name calling figures very high in their "skill set."
Exactly. Talk about snowflakes!

👍
Feature, not bug.
Edit: Not that I blame them. I'm a citizen and I'm feeling less and less safe.
I think about you quite often during these times, along with other friends of mine who feel the same way. I worry for their safety and yours. And I hate what this country has become.
And the enshittification of America continues. Way to go MAGATS!
