For a guy who lectured generals and admirals about body shape and body hair, Hegseth is definitely one insecure male. And everyone who’s watching understands just how weak he is.
Hegseth is operating from a paradigm that went out of fashion about the same time as the twist did. He belongs at the head of a 21st-century armed forces about as well as Mango Mussolini does.
And his actions are doing serious harm to the readiness of our armed forces.
This would be a great time for our adversaries to take advantage of the mess & confusion this regime has created for our troops, unfortunately. I really worry about that. We now have a far less robust military defense than we had when this rogue regime took over, despite the huge increase in revenue for the military, because of all the foolish, reckless actions taken by this regime. The change of the name of this department from Defense to War accurately reflects the change in priorities of this regime. They've reduced our ability to defend ourselves or any allies (assuming we still have any, or that we will honor any of the pacts or treaties to which we've committed ourselves) while provoking conflicts around the world.
I was raised by a single mom, and Scouting was a big part of my life (I am an Eagle Scout). For me it was a place where a boy could just be a boy. Learning values like self-reliance, achieving goals, and community service were all a part of it. Later, I was in Explorers (high-school aged boys) which was more inclusive of girls, but mostly we wanted to backpack, canoe, and have car rallies.
I am also a Navy veteran, and saw the early days of integrating women into shipboard life. As with Scouting, there were growing pains but largely that has been dealt with. To my mind, it makes no sense to bar 50% of the population from full participation in either Scouting or the Navy. This has happened in all professions, and it is the right thing to do.
It has begun in all professions and some have embraced it more than others, and then there are plenty that are still fighting against it with all their might. Nowadays, it’s being reversed in a very frightening way. I can also attest that there has not been parity yet. There were steps, but even the most accepting professions still discriminate to some extent.
I have seen my medical team (I’m 73) go from entirely male to mostly female. I have seen the Supreme Court go from all white make to a broad mix of race and gender. To me, this is the American promise being fulfilled. Far from perfect but going in the right direction.
It’s a good start, I agree. I think what I was focusing on was the part where you mention the growing pains being dealt with. As a female veteran, when I was serving, the growing pains were still painful to the soldiers. I’m guessing they were being addressed even more since my time, but I would not say they’re gone now. And just wait because much of the strides we’ve made in the past 70 years are being reversed quite rapidly. Unless we can nip this regime in the bud now, we will have to fight all the fights we’ve already won all over again. We already have too many losses.
It’s definitely been a “two steps forward, one step back” situation. I am hopeful that once this administration is eradicated that we will get back on track. (I’m a little prejudiced since I have daughters and granddaughters.)

Men identified by the scouts, their churches, their communities, families, wives, children, and above all, by themselves as heterosexual.

I worked for the scouts 52 years ago. I lasted about a month before I quit. I did not like the overly militaristic viewpoint of so many of my colleagues. I was a short haired hippie who wore bellbottoms and Hawaiian shirts. They didn’t like that. I also did not like the paranoia regarding gay people. Quite apart from the homophobia itself, I knew there was something definitely wrong with their fears. But the information about molestation was how shall we put it— kept under extreme wraps.

We practiced with our son how to answer that question by drawing on Jewish tradition. He wasn’t asked, as it happened.

My house has some serious feelings about this policy. My husband is upset about the government dropping the scouts, but he’s also quite angry about the reasons for it. He’s so excited for my daughter to get her Eagle Scout in a few weeks, he’s also pretty down on Hegseth anyway, because of his and my military service. Hegseth is embarrassing, I have more time in service and I left in good standing, he was kicked out on his ass.
Since everyone in my family, aside from myself, are Eagle Scouts (or will be in a minute, like daughter is waiting for her board of review and she’s done.) they are disappointed with the anti-woke reasonings. I am not surprised, ever since they started scrubbing women from the websites and firing female generals. I am worried that my daughter’s eagle scouts will not be acknowledged now. The troop she is in is very good, all the adults work hard to make them feel welcome and the boys troop all are respectful. My husband does the social media for my eldest’s old troop, he sees a lot of comments made by “old school” scouts from way back when, who can’t stand any of the changes. Ever since they allowed girls to join, there has been really terrible backlash, they forget that these are children and they are only trying to grow and learn. These old men, and some women, just focus on a romanticized version of what they thought they experienced when they first joined, like the MAGAts who want us to go back to the 1950s,and their sense of superiority.
My eldest’s eagle certificate is signed by Trump, and my daughter will get the same, maybe, if he acknowledges it or if they have the president sign them at all. Their work and accomplishments are greater than the signature on the document, we will on.y ever recognize that.

Among the masculine cultivating activities I participated in were decorating a heart and writing a poem to my mommy for Valentine’s Day, painting a Christmas ornament (so weird and ugly that it still finds a place in our tree), writing a letter to President Nixon to tell him how awesome he was, and playing a starring role in a skit about ecology. Unfortunately, I missed the parts where we learned that Girl Scouts were to look purty and bake us some damned cookies, unmasculine non-scouts needed their butts kicked and to hand over their lunch money, and rules were for suckers not for warriors.

I was a Cub Scout in the 70s. Among the masculine cultivating activities I participated in were decorating a heart and writing a poem to my mommy for Valentine’s Day, painting a Christmas ornament (so weird and ugly that it still finds a place in our tree), writing a letter to President Nixon to tell him how awesome he was, and playing a starring role in a skit about ecology. Unfortunately, I missed the parts where we learned that Girl Scouts were to look purty and bake us some damned cookies, unmasculine non-scouts needed their butts kicked and to hand over their lunch money, and rules were for suckers not for warriors.

Got my draft notice in 1970. During introduction at basic training, we were asked if anybody had been in the Boy Scouts. Those individuals were made squad leaders and were fast tracked to promotions. They already had "training" in field craft, marching, uniforms, etc.
