It isn't limited to Texas. Conservatives will clutch their pearls over things like this, while claiming flooding our society with guns is somehow keeping us safe. By and large, vocal conservatives tend to see individual rights as a threat to their sense of entitlement and privilege.

Did no Texas kkkonservative see "Peter Pan" with Mary Martin when they were growing up? It was a classic that re-aired for decades.

Cathy Rigby as well.

Texass. I guess they never heard that Shakespeare himself cast men and boys as women/girls in his plays.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Not only did he cast them, he all but couldn't cast women, as the stage was thought to be an inappropriate venue for women in those days.

Boreal's avatar

Many of these bigots have no idea who Shakespeare was.

The writer Nicholas Shakespeare, author of The Dancer Upstairs, has nothing to do with theater. Don't know what you're talking about./s

Conservatives are actually FOR "cancel culture" as long as they're the ones doing the cancelling.

Joe King's avatar

They believe that not being allowed to silence others is silencing them.

NOGODZ20's avatar

And they’ll claim that loudly and repeatedly.

Does the school district really think bullying a group of children is going to make them look good?

"Does the school district really think..."

I think I see your problem right there.

It would appear that we have a high school student with some serious determination and backbone and a faculty with damned little or none. Little House of Horrors is a genuinely fun bit of camp which students could easily have a great time with ... except that for some stupid reason, someone wants to invoke anti-drag legislation WHICH HAS BEEN OVERTURNED to frustrate Ms. Mota's desire to play the lead.

Stupid, ignorant, and juvenile ... and no, I am emphatically NOT referring to Ana!

Joe King's avatar

I am not sure if I should be worried that a 17 year old child is the adult in the room, or optimistic that a 17 year old child is showing that level of maturity.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

When the "kids" are acting like adults and the adults more resemble a bunch of squabbling 3rd graders ... yeah, I worry!

Richard S. Russell's avatar

If I were a friend or relative of Ana's I would be SO PROUD OF HER!

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Hear-freaking-HEAR!!!

I, who has never even met her and am very unlikely to, am PROUD OF HER!

This is what's important to school officials in TexASS. Not reading, writing and arithmetic, but LGBT & drag. In theater, no less. This is the fruit of christian lunacy. That girl worked hard to get the part and learn it. Then it's taken from her based on insanity. It's great to see her standing up for herself, even though the administration will never back down because if she plays the part in might make their imaginary friend upset. We are a failed society letting this take place.

Their attempt to deflect from their core objection, that there would be a potentially lesbian relationship on stage, by complaining about a different relationship in the musical isn't withstanding any level of scrutiny.

If it was really about the abusive relationship between other characters, why didn't they lead with that and say nothing about the relationship between the two leads? If it wasn't about the two main characters developing a romantic relationship, why did they first try to force recasting to make the leads mixed gender? The discovery in the discrimination and civil rights lawsuit should be interesting.

If I were the director, I would have maliciously complied and recast Audrey with a boy instead of taking away Ms Mota's star turn.

ericc's avatar

It's not a lesbian relationship, because the *characters* are one male and one female. Idiots.

Nice to see that Texas has no pressing concerns that have to be dealt with. :S

And now you know why my partner and I moved out of Texas and into the Midwest.

Yes, the Midwest can be conservative; but it is nowhere near as looney as Texas.

Texas is No Man’s Land.

Disregarding a literal millennia of men playing women’s roles because of stupid laws like these, and women playing “pants roles” of men in operas and musicals. My wife (a professional singer) did an amazing recital of famous songs that are sung by “pants role” women in shows.

The Voice in the Wilderness Speaks:

It is amazing that Christian conservatives have no problem live streaming an execution (with all the violence and trauma that would cause with people), but a female playing a role in a musical that’s a problem. I said it before, I say it again IF CHRISTIANS CONSERVATIVES WEREN’T HYPOCRITES THEY WOULDN’T BE CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES!

The christains who rammed this garbage down the public throat need to suffer personal consequences. As long as they can shift the fallout onto the public purse they'll keep doing this shit.

Ugh!!!!!! For centuries women weren’t even allowed to read, let alone perform, so men played all the women’s parts. Theater was always drag. Always. The whole point of it is a form of drag, really. Dressing up in costumes playing a character not like you, being dramatic and showy. It’s all drag, just not always DRessing As Girl. I mean, Romeo and Juliette was performed for nearly the entirely of its existence by men, and the romantic plot was never an issue, because that’s the way it had to be. Now that women can perform, we are owed the opportunity to play the men’s parts just to make up a little bit for all the times women were portrayed by men to support our oppression.

I can attest to the comments about not having enough male actors involved in theater to cover the roles available. My daughter’s high school has this problem. All the different theater troupes I am involved in struggle to find male actors. So I have been cast in male roles, or the scene has been flipped to be for women rather than men. There’s also a dearth of roles for women, especially roles that are more than just a romantic interest for the main character. I am in a class for acting, put on by the community theater, and we were paired up by the instructor and told to choose a scene with our partners. My male instructor paired me with another woman, similar age as myself - middle aged/50s - with my same name, thinking he was being clever. We spent weeks leading up to the class trying to find a scene we could workshop for the class. Every scene we offered up was shot down because it was not deep enough, the characters were too young, we only talked about men (it didn’t pass the Bechtel test) and just his whim. We have finally found a good scene (from ‘Night Mother - very dark and emotionally heavy). But we were not finding anything for some time and not much was out there written for middle aged women. And what is, aside from a few rare exceptions, is quite shallow and completely made up of bad stereotypes. So, it feels like the media is made for the people who don’t even want to participate in it anymore.

Still, the whole issue is moot, since the law isn’t even constitutional and has been struck down as such. Multiple times. The student and her mother are doing what we all should do when faced with the RWNJs, push back on their controlling efforts. They do not get to decide what is right, not when they support people like Trump, Paxton, governor hotwheels, and the rest of the Epstein Class. They don’t have a leg to stand on and yet they’re still trying to win the ass kicking contest. We need to stop letting them play, they’re insanely hypocritical, morally bankrupt, and hideously corrupt.

The more they show high school kids how messed up our politics are now the more they are going to register to vote as soon as they can so they can vote against this culture war crap.
