And still Republican-free.

REPUBLICANS: "Public policies based on reason and not negative emotion and intolerance? Keeping church and state separate? Fighting against discrimination and not for discrimination? Championing free thought? We'll have none of THAT!"

Be fair, they might just as well write "I am a gay trans-Communist atheist, all over their foreheads. If they weren't lynched, they pretty much wouldn't get elected ever again I suspect.

Their gods are dead, their "faith" is in tatters. All they have left are threats and name calling.

is THAT what it is? I just KNEW there was some subtle pattern in the membership of that group that I just wasn't noticing. I though it might have been that they all had brown eyes. Or maybe that they almost all have the letter 'e' in their name. But you noticed that almost invisible detail O_o bravo.

(I love a healthy dose of sarcasm with my coffee)

No doubt there exists atheist, agnostic or non-religious Republicans. I will applaud the first one to have the guts to join this group, but won't hold my breath.

Expand full comment

As soon as they out themselves as non-Christian, the rest of the Republicans would descend on them like hyenas on Scar.

Expand full comment

Agreed, regardless of political party I bet there's a lot a lot more of them in US Congress than we are aware of or that personally admit to it. I wonder how many of them randomly go to church just because it "looks good" to their constituents. Absolutely no politician should be asked what religion they are..... that question shouldn't even come up, it is completely irrelevant.

Expand full comment

Of course, they could join this group and still be Christian. That no one has speaks volumes of their fear of their constituents.

Expand full comment

Yes. No requirement other than an allegiance to reason. That definitely eliminates the fundamentalist types.

And the vast majority of those who still call themselves Republican.

First and foremost, WELCOME LIZZIE! We're glad you joined the Congressional Freethought Caucus! Now ... any chance you can get some of your colleagues on the other side of the aisle to consider coming along, too?

One can always hope!

Expand full comment

In a Legislature saturated by Christianity, just 5% of House Members are courageous enough to join a caucus devoted to "freedom from religion" -- so each new member is cause for celebration.

Always nice to see a group that promotes thought, reason, and tolerance growing. Here's hoping for many more years and much higher membership in the future.

MTG, Boober and Gaytz are starting a Congressional Free-from-Thought Caucus to counter this liberal agenda. The rest of the Republican party plans to join. They'll be holding prayer breakfasts and bible readings in lieu of solving real problems.

Only Caucasians can join their Caucus.

Will snake handling be done each Monday morning?

For some reason I'm obsessed with snake handling even though I've only seen it on TV and in video. Will they be up at the front in Congress in a circle speaking in tongues like the Arizona legislature did right before the Supreme Court put in the 1864 band. Getting themselves all worked up in a tether...... with the Holy Spirit running through their body. Gyrating around.

You want to unite tribes of religious Christians, Jews and Muslims into a unified force, March them to a peaceful village of atheists. They will descend upon the village on their horses with swords raised to put these enemies of god to the sword and burn down their village. Remember that the Catholics wiped out Cathars in Europe who were Christians but believed in forming their own individual connection with god rather than falling in line under the pope.

Expand full comment

They didn't have a choice. They had already wiped out Arians several centuries ago, and unlike North Africa and Middle East, Russia's climate was not attractive enough to go kill what was left of Pagans there.

Also they believed women were equals, which other than the king wanted their land, had much to do with it.

Was that satire? Equal?

Expand full comment

From Wiki because I'm lazy.

"Role of women

Catharism has been seen as giving women the greatest opportunities for independent action, since women were found as being believers as well as Perfecti, who were able to administer the sacrament of the consolamentum.

Cathars believed that a person would be repeatedly reincarnated until they committed to self-denial of the material world. A man could be reincarnated as a woman and vice versa. The spirit was of utmost importance to the Cathars and was described as being immaterial and sexless. Because of this belief, the Cathars saw women as equally capable of being spiritual leaders."

Thanks – I was wondering, not being American.

Expand full comment

Yes, but, will the repukelicans pass laws to undermine it like they do here in Floriduh?

Expand full comment

I don't think so because the Arizona legislature is somewhat evenly split, even though the Republicans have the majority, slim. and AZ ballot measure is based on simple majority, not 60% like Florida. The anti-abortionist stalked the pro choice volunteers throughout signature campaign. The pro-choice ballot needed something like 384,000 signatures to be put out to vote, they are already over 500,000 and still have a few months left to gather more signatures.
