A big part of why private schools are often perceived as being better than public schools stems from the fact private schools are free to pick and choose who is allowed to attend. Special needs kids are out of luck. In some cases the quality of instruction is indeed better, but that is far from universally true. Slapping the word Christian on a school is definitely not evidence the school is moral, ethical, and has high standards. One of their core objectives will always be advancing their particular Christian creed. Every public dollar that goes to private education, is a dollar taken away from already under-funded public schools.

Slapping the word "Christian" on a school is a strong indicator that the education they provide is substandard and likely a grift.

Often, but not always true. My grand kids went K-12 through a Christian school here in Dallas that routinely sends graduates to the Ivy League and other prestigious schools.

Rethuglicans only like education if it is their kind of education. They honestly don't care if the kids can do anything useful at the end of their education. They can just move on to Liberty University. Pretty soon nobody will understand anything about the society they live in - which is just fine with The Tech Bros and The Dictator In Chief.

Wow, talk about a TOTAL LACK of oversight. It's almost as though the Arizona legislature AND the governor fell asleep at the switch and allowed the LDS church to run amok and do as they pleased. Worse, it's pretty clear that the organizers of the Title of Liberty had NO IDEA of how to made their new school work and thus plainly and simply WASTED MONEY.

If I were a parent with school kids in Arizona and learned about this, I would be PISSED and rightly so.

It’s not the church itself. It’s an individual trying to exploit the church to suck in gullible parents who belong to the church,….& steal tax dollars

Eroding educational standards have plagued us for years. Add politics to the mix and it’s gotten even worse. Geez, it’s almost seems that the Republicans don’t want to educate their children. (Sarcasm font)!

Make no mistake, both branches of government want that. The Dems just put on a pretty face and say they care about certain things, but they really don't. They are controlled opposition.

This has been going on for years. I used to work in the charter world there. The scamming goes from the bottom up. The real estate deals, they funnel money to construct schools to their own companies, create “curriculum “ companies, marketing companies, employ family members. If they get in trouble they just shift everything to family members and change names. Mormons have their hands all over this cash cow. Scandals frequent and well known and nobody does anything to stop it.

This tyrannical takeover and inappropriate use of OUR tax dollars is the culmination of privileging religion in the US. This is what happens when the world of make-believe (because that’s what religion is) is defined as reality due to public pressure.

My daughter has had to move three times to find education for my granddaughters. Charter schools have continued the destruction of a public education that once was a shared value across the country. Now it is a patchwork of underfunded education systems that makes it very clear why we have a criminal ex-actor as the president. Our education has been on the road to destruction with so many misguided programs that has made our idea of education a joke to any other civilized country. Capitalism and religion are making our young people starve for decent education. Capitalism requires the most profit from the least expenditure, so we do not invest in our schools because it requires tax dollars that capitalism finds repulsive. Our billionaire class could fund the richest education for everyone, but instead they complain about their tax rate and demand deeper cuts. Religion is very profitable because it is tax free, so it is extreme capitalism. Perfect for bringing in dollars and providing their idea of education. Religion requires a curriculum that is free of any kind of real information such as how government works or any other uncomfortable subjects that can make a student somewhat informed about their future. What we have is a nation of uninformed young people who deserve so much more.

“Some of the families using that money include parents who can afford, and may already be sending their kids to, private schools.”

Here’s a wacky idea: how about an income cap for eligibility to receive vouchers so that the money actually goes to help poor people?

Hahahahaha. I crack myself up.

"Title of Liberty Academy". What the actual fuck does that even mean? Is that some Mor(m)on thing like magic underwear?

Expand full comment

I can answer that. The Title of Liberty is a flag that a Book of Mormon character created in an effort to inspire and lead his congregation of righteous soldiers and followers against evil doers.

From the Interwebs: The Title of Liberty flag - "In the Book of Mormon, Captain Moron tore a piece of his coat to create a flag, writing a message to remind the people to defend their freedom, religion, and peace. He hung the flag from every tower and inspired the Nephites to stand up for what was right."

Being that I live not too far from the address listed for this 'school', I feel like I need to provide a bit of context.

The LDS/Mormon Church does this sort of thing routinely so far as I can tell. They more or less own local politics, they ignore any laws they don't like, and they expect to be treated as better members of the community for it. In short, they usually are the problem, and they like it that way because for the most part they reap the benefit of that situation.

I have no expectation that Michelle Edwards will suffer any serious consequences for what she has done here. She should be serving prison time and have to repay the government for any money she received as well as having to repay families she defrauded, but odds are that won't happen. She might make some teary-eyed apology at some point, but I'm not even going to hold my breath for that much; I fully expect her to be able to get away with this without having to hire an attorney. That is the reach of Mormon influence in Arizona, more's the pity.

The sudden closing of a charter school is typical of the beast. No surprise there.

The Republicans stealing money from the dept of education is the nature of the beast. No surprise there.

I’m confused about the folks who support republican policies are shocked when crap doesn’t work out. Ha ha ha, I make myself laugh, they are products of republican educations.

Seriously though, they’re venerating Musk as some wunderkind businessman, who laid off entire departments of highly educated skilled workers in order to ship foreign workers he can pay pennies. Then he announces to the world he did it, while also directly insulting the very people that fawn over him for being uneducated. We will just continue to be uneducated until we can overcome our republican infection.

I have to add that I have watched and learned about the Mormon cult, and it is astounding that it has become the behemoth of organized religion and the fact that everything about them is following the money and making sure they are bleeding the beast and taking every tax dollar they can from the public. It is a national disgrace that we prove tax shelters for organizations that are incredibly wealthy but claiming it is all for the glory of some god that is shaped quite a bit like a dollar sign.

Recognize the vast wealth the LDS church has and the massive amounts of land and businesses it owns, tax free, they shouldn’t be getting vouchers handed to them. LDS is one of, if not the, largest landowners in the USA. It really is just a money laundering grift.
