We get Jehovah's Witnesses here from time to time. I've engaged them in conversation more than once, and mostly, I don't think they much appreciate my factual and evidentiary approach to their belief system! 😁
I got a pair of Mormon 'Elders' when I first moved to SW GA. I sent them off with a copy of David Fitzgerald's book - 'The Mormons'. I will never know if they had the courage to keep it and read it, but I have had none since.
I live right near one of the Mormon temples. 17 years ago, some Mormon boys came to my door to sell me, excuse me, tell me about the religion. I told them I was a gay man, and I absolutely resented their church thinking it had any business inserting itself into my life. Weren’t there some starving kids in Africa that they could feed?
I've always kinda wanted the Morms to show up at my door. I'd just be nice and chill, offer some water, and be very open about being non-religious without trying to start a debate. Given that the LDS church's goal with missionaries is most likely to scare them from leaving the church because all the non-morms are hostile, I imagine it could have some positive impact.
I encountered my first pair when I filled out one of those mail-in cards to get my own copy of the Book of Mormon... took a while to get them out the door. To my credit and eternal boredom, I read it cover to cover. You have not lived until you have read 'The Book of Ether'!
I'm currently reading the Tanakh (I'm enjoying it! ancient literature/myth/history is fascinating and theres a lot in it that's compelling in a similar way to Gilgamesh, the Odyssey, etc) and might do the NT after. Part of me wants to do TBOM but it seems a lot less fun :(
The one pair of "elders" that graced my door a couple years back were greeted with: "Are you aware that the founder of your religion was a convicted felon?"
It is a very expensive religion to practice - not just the tithing, but how they have stuff they have to do to fill every spare moment with - peppering their god on Kolob with their prayers...
A commenter on an atheist blog said they say to JWs at their door, 'Sorry, wrong house, no children here.' I wanted to try this, and after a ten month wait, got my wish. I said that sentence to the older JW at my door. 'Oh no' she replied, 'the bible's not just for children,' So I said, 'I couldn't possibly join any organisation that allows its leaders to sexually abuse children and then cover it up.' She looked shocked and said 'we'd never do anything like that!' I asked her if she had a computer and knew about something called Google and if not, find one and she'd see I was correct. She opened and closed her mouth and backed down the 6 steps up to my door where a much younger companion was speechless too and off they went.
I would have opened the door. Then start asking the hard questions that do not fit their theology. "Atheists go to hell, right?" "Yes." "I am an atheist because I haven't seen sufficient good evidence that a god of any sort exists. Do you really believe that infinite torture is the correct punishment for the crime of being unconvinced?" "..." (Head explodes.)
I hope they show up at my house. I never miss an opportunity to go one-on-one with the Bible thumpers, starting with asking each of them for their home address so that I can show on their doorsteps, unannounced and uninvited, and tell them why their beliefs are bullshit. I've done this to mormons, baptists, and JWs. Sadly, I haven't had any return visits in several years. Probably on a list somewhere.....😜
I would have returned the bible, at least. In my house, I can fairly quickly lay my hands on a half dozen copies, two or three English translations, and one French. Plus the app on my phone that gives me access to dozens of English translations. I don't need a free bible, I already have too many.
If I approached some strangers, told them that they are full of sins that I created for them, but that they will be saved from these sins because I will arrange to have my child killed, and then they could worship him and myself of course, I would expect and hope that anyone so approached would call child protective services right away.
Sometimes I do what you did, but other times I will just greet them with a big smile and tell them thank you, but I'm an atheist. They usually don't have much to say.
I started by asking them if they follow the bible. They always say yes. Then I tell them that I am an atheist and ask "Are you going to kill me ? Your bible says you must in Deuteronomy." When they say no I then point out that they are choosing which to follow and which not. Who makes the choice?
Like many of you in this comment thread I have seen no visits since then!
It's not easy to convey in words the contempt I have for the Southern Baptist Convention. These are the dupes who want to take the bible literally, from rendering women to second-class status and insisting that EVERY pregnancy go to term to their heinous attacks on the LGBTQ+ community. They are a pox on American society, and the fact that their overall numbers are falling is some of the more heartening news I have heard in a while. It would seem as though a considerable number of their own members have finally taken a look in the mirror, recognized the horror that is the SBC, and voted with their feet. Fine with me.
Their insistence that every pregnancy goes to term is definitely not pro-life. We have the numbers, more women die and more infants die when you increase abortion restrictions. All they really have is the (false) emotional appeal of "Save the baybeez!"
The rest is gleeful cruelty. See the deliberate misgendering of Hon. Sarah McBride, M.C. on the Congressional Record.
A study from Gender Equity Policy Institute was just released that women in states with bans are 2X as likely to die in pregnancy. Jessica Valenti at Abortion Everyday reported on this not surprising, but horrific news.
I'm not sure about the polygyny. Their anti-gay rhetoric is filled with "one man, one woman" bullshit. They have to do the Public Apology to the Ceiling if they are caught with their mistresses.
They split from what was then called the Triennial Convention in 1845 because the rest of the Baptists wouldn't take an official position on slavery and some congregations in the northeast said owning people might be bad. The SBC was all about owning people so they fucked off to headquarter in Georgia. It took them until 1995 to officially say "Hey, we're sorry we were such racist assholes." They (barely) hid that racism until Cheetolini came to power, then they started to be open about it again.
The Methodists split also, but they came back together in 1939. In 1968 the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church combined to form the United Methodist Church. Many of the anti-gay churches who split off to form the Global Methodist Church were former Methodist South churches. Not a single church I served left the UMC. If I still had a dog in the fight, I would be relieved that the homophobic trash took itself out of the Methodist Church.
I think this decline is due in part to that sect embracing hard right political positions that tend to devalue women. Several prominent Baptist preachers pledged their unconditional love to the most corrupt and immoral President in U.S. History, and that didn't help them. Baptists and other conservative sects are desperate for government to step in and backstop their religion. I do not see that working for them in the long term.
CC at "roll to disbelieve" did an article on how the share of men in SBC congregations is going up. SBC PR spins this as "look, we are getting more men!" but in reality the trend over the last few years is that they've lost a huge percent of their women and a smaller percent of their men, which is why the ratio has changed.
A college buddy of mine told me a story about an interesting experience his family had with doorstep evangelizers. His dad was out mowing the lawn one day when a pair of Jehovah’s Witnesses stopped by and wanted to give him their presentation. He said he was busy at the moment, but maybe it was something the whole family would like to hear, so could they come by again Thursday evening at 7 PM? They said they would.
The following day my friend’s mom was headed out the door to go grocery shopping when a pair of Mormon missionaries were walking up, also wanting to make their pitch. But she said she couldn’t right now, could they come back, oh, say, Thursday night at 7? Of course they could.
So the appointed hour arrived, and so did the two pairs of crusaders, and there was some laffing and sorting and explaining, and eventually it was decided that the two teams would take turns giving their spiels. So the first pair would say something, and then some family member would turn to the other team and say “What do you think of that?”, and the answer would be some painfully polite version of “No, they’re full of shit.”, and this apparently went on for several hours.
My buddy said it was the best night’s free entertainment they ever had.
Your friend has a very weird idea of what is entertaining. Friend of mine's father was approached while mowing the lawn by a couple of JW's. He emptied the lawn clippings all over them. Mind you, he was a Methodist minister.

Mike Waltz has just become the first of Chump: The Sequel's "best people" to get Scaramucci'd. SecDef Kegseth is evidently safe for the moment, so he can now put away the bottle he was going to crack open if he got fired, and instead open a bottle to celebrate 𝘯𝘰𝘵 being fired.

I wonder if they’ve tried praying. “Dear Jesus, I asked this sincerely in your name, as you commended us to do. Please make more people Christians. In fact, please make them southern Baptists, so they can be as perfect as you are. Please pay no attention to those child molesting pastors. They’re not true Christians. Please pay no attention to millionaires and billionaires. I’m sure they will give away all that they have and follow you. Just look at Pat Robertson. He’s with you now.”
Are we 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 Pat's really dead, and not just waiting for someone to dribble a little blood on his fangs? I feel like someone should go put a stake through his heart just to be on the safe side.
Poor Southern Batshit Church, nobody sane wants to be part of an organization that was founded to defend slavery 160 years after the end of that wretched institution. Cue the sad trombone.
We live in NC. Yesterday three young ladies rang our doorbell. Fortunately, we have security cameras so we could see them, and we hid!
They are from Emmaus Baptist Church (Billy Graham) and left us all sorts of material, plus a bible, which is now in the recycling bin.
According to their materials, we are all born sinners and deserve hell! But guess what is going to save us???
I always hope that perhaps one of three is secretly becoming a free thinker and questioning the whole thing. It does happens!
We get Jehovah's Witnesses here from time to time. I've engaged them in conversation more than once, and mostly, I don't think they much appreciate my factual and evidentiary approach to their belief system! 😁
Never let facts and evidence get in the way of your delusional system!

That was the last time the Mormons came by.
I am sure they went right back and told their 'Bishop'. I'm sure I am on the 'Verboten' list with the local infestation.

Or as Mark Twain described the BoM: “Chloroform in print.”
And lo!, it came to pass…
You beat me to it.
I read the Book of Ether and it put me right to sleep.
Maybe I should give it a try.
I'm currently reading the Tanakh (I'm enjoying it! ancient literature/myth/history is fascinating and theres a lot in it that's compelling in a similar way to Gilgamesh, the Odyssey, etc) and might do the NT after. Part of me wants to do TBOM but it seems a lot less fun :(
What I've seen of it seems like poorly written KJV fanfic.
The one pair of "elders" that graced my door a couple years back were greeted with: "Are you aware that the founder of your religion was a convicted felon?"
They didn't like that much.
They might not care so much now, seeing that ther new messiah is in the White House...
[shrug] Like attracts like, I suppose. 😝
I'll bet the combined ages of the "Elders" was 36.
It is a very expensive religion to practice - not just the tithing, but how they have stuff they have to do to fill every spare moment with - peppering their god on Kolob with their prayers...

Practice makes perfect.

If my front door didn't face the street, I'd give them a show and have them screaming "My Eyes" like Al Bundy.
😂. If only I had the nerve.....
Why throw it ? You can keep the paper for your fireplace, if you have one, a bbq or a campfire.
I would have returned the bible, at least. In my house, I can fairly quickly lay my hands on a half dozen copies, two or three English translations, and one French. Plus the app on my phone that gives me access to dozens of English translations. I don't need a free bible, I already have too many.
I have 3 translations depending on who is flinging bible quotes at me.
I invent verses from imaginary scriptures. Fortunately, those scriptures always agree with me.
Blackout poetry?

One of the advantages of living here in Geezerville, is that we're pretty well left alone. Most seniors made their minds up long ago.

As they should. Religion is the downfall of us all.

That fact should surprise no one. It SHOULD disgust EVERYONE.
Worth noting that gender diverse people are also deeply affected by abortion bans.
Absolutely. It’s all part of their plan for imposing gender hierarchy and order in society.
They take the bible literally until it negatively impact the men lives, like hairstyles or food restrictions. They probably would be OK with polygyny.
I'm not sure about the polygyny. Their anti-gay rhetoric is filled with "one man, one woman" bullshit. They have to do the Public Apology to the Ceiling if they are caught with their mistresses.
It'd be a Gilead situation. They'd have their harems and just call 'em something different to pretend they aren't what they are.
You said it, it's for their anti LGBTQI+ propaganda. Like they are anti social benefits, unless it's for them.
Their rhetoric can be "one-man-one-woman" all they want. Solomon would likely argue with them just a tittle bit, though!
The sect that gave us the KKK. May it disappear without a trace.

A very well documented trace that leaves nothing to interpretation for the ignorant, lazy generations to follow.
