Don't forget the marine chronometer invented by John Harrison in 1844 used to determine longitude. For that matter, the sunstones used by the freaking vikings! This guy peaked when he was cast on Road Rules.
I mean, if the midshipmen in the audience didnโt already realize he was talking out his ass, this line alone would have opened their eyes. I cannot believe these folks who are graduating from a school of sailors donโt know the history of navigation like the back of their hands and will believe Duffyโs ignorant take. Heโs telling experts about his elementary knowledge. Someone should have patted him on the head and said, โthatโs nice, dear. Now go along and play, the grownups are talking.โ
I am may be wrong but I think DM had once a compass as a keychain when I was a child and she teached me how to use it. She also teached me how to make a solar cadran with a twig and some dirt.
Canopus is a prominent Southern circumpolar star. It is the one which told the ancient Egyptians when the Nile was due to flood - when it first became visible in the nighttime winter sky. Good for navigating, too.
Canopus is due South of Sirius and becomes visible in the nighttime winter sky in January. I can see it from my office window at night if the lights are off. 2nd brightest star in the sky - secondary to Sirius.
"The ancient Egyptians noticed that the heliacal rising of the star Sirius, the brightest in the night sky, would occur a short time before the annual flooding of the Nile. The heliacal rising of Sirius therefore kicked off the farming season in ancient Egypt."
I learned it the way I said in High School, in my post, but after trying all day to confirm it, I obviously learned it wrong. I submit to your greater knowledge. Still, neither way matches up to modern growing calendars.
I actually found something. I wonder if you didn't confuse the city of Canopus founded by Greeks in Egypt and named from one of their myths with the star you mentioned earlier.
โThere are two kinds of people in life: those who believe in God and those who think theyโre God. Thereโs something beautiful, humbling, and properly ordered about a man and woman who understand that there is a power greater than themselves.โ
Youโre confusing atheists with Trump. Atheists donโt believe they are gods, they just donโt believe your claims about a god existing, and what you claim your god is. If no gods exist, then we cannot be gods. Logic.
Properly ordered? Son, this is a clear attempt at setting up an authoritarian regime. While that is how the military works, it is often counterproductive to society, and even in the military it gets in the way of effective service.
In regards to the idea that there is power greater than us, duh. But it doesnโt have to be a god and it is clearly not your God. Atheists and folks who arenโt religious donโt think they are the end all, be all. Christians tend to act that way. We know damned well that there are things out of our control, that we canโt change the laws of physics, for instance. But yโall MAGA, evangelical, Christian supremacists, or whatever seem to think you are in charge of reality. The rockets illegally shot at Iran really did obliterate the countryโs nuclear capabilities, Trump is handsome, the 2020 election was stolen, Elon is a genius and absolutely not a Nazi. None of these are true, but you seem to think if Trump says it, itโs real. You canโt make it real. Atheists understand this, you clearly do not.
Oh this is why I stopped arguing with Christian apologists years ago. They LOVE to tell atheists what we believe, and all it is is propaganda to prevent them from thinking for themselves and to keep them in their cult. Yak yak yak. Arguing with them is pointless. I taught my own kids to frame the argument as a need rather than a belief: "I don't need a Sky Daddy, I don't need gods (plural! always use plural) in my life." You completely bypass the whole "does god exist" argument that way. My kids learned to say "well, if I was going to choose a god, I sure wouldn't choose yours. I'd choose ___" (I think it was Anubis for my daughter because she loved dogs and is into 'liminal spaces'; and for my son... I don't remember. He was the kid who told his kindergarten friend that "God is like Santa--make believe." LOL)
""well, if I was going to choose a god, I sure wouldn't choose yours. I'd choose ___""
I always go with Athena. The way worship of her (and maybe all gods) is described in The Odyssey is wrapping fat and sinew around thigh bones and burning them, or as I like to call it, grilling.
If there is truly something greater than us, it is probably the laws of physics, and everything that derives from them. That isn't a god; it's the rules of the game.
I expect only Christian Nazionalist rhetoric from anyone connected to the regime. But this? Claiming that everyone who does not believe in the Christian idea of the Abrahamic god thinks they are themselves god? It is a fairly safe bet that each of those midshipmen knows at least one other midshipman that isn't some sort of Christian. For your boss to tell you that the guy next to you is trying to replce god with themselves in next level demonization.
Duffy is trying to plant the idea that anyone who does not believe is anti-American and an active agent of evil. We may not be near the top of the list for being rounded up and sent to camps, but we are on that list.
Oh that's been the argument for a long time. "Atheists turn themselves in God, atheists worship themselves." And then you could get into the argument that "atheists don't believe in gods or in worshipping anything" but it's pointless. Oh, and it goes along with "gay people worship themselves and that's why they choose a partner of the same gender as them." Yadda yadda. Walk away. Block.
If Jesus is the answer then it must be a very convoluted question because Christianity is the most factionalized religion on the planet and there is nothing close to consensus on that subject. I feel sorry for those graduates because I doubt they had any choice but to attend. For politicians like Duffy, religion isn't an actual solution it's an excuse for his own incompetence. Any failure can be blamed on a lack of faith, or God moving in mysterious ways. I know what happened to my religious faith when I listened to an idiot priest in Vietnam give us a 'Kill a Commie for Christ' pep talk. I hope Duffy's speech has a similar effect on at least some of the graduates.
A large part of the cost we pay for having Shitler in charge is having these ignorant hacks addressing our young men and women. Disinformation on steroids.
Yeph. One had to wonder how in the heck they want "christianity" to be the rule of law, ask them if Christians argue so much over what their religion is, then why would we want them to be in charge of society?
Trying to sort out who was, or was not, a TRUE Christian has spilled enough blood to float the Navy. The men who wrote the Constitution knew that and not giving religion a role to play in the governance of their new country was not an accidental omission.
I regret buying what they were selling for too many years. Now the fascists are trying to rewrite our Constitution. The Corrupt Supreme 6 will let them do it.
I will defer to the incomparable Christopher Hitchens for a response to this lightweight:
โReligion is a totalitarian belief. It is the wish to be a slave. It is the desire that there be an unalterable, unchallengeable, tyrannical authority who can convict you of thought crime while you are asleep, who can subject you to total surveillance around the clock every waking and sleeping minute of your life, before you're born and, even worse and where the real fun begins, after you're dead. A celestial North Korea. Who wants this to be true? Who but a slave desires such a ghastly fate? I've been to North Korea. It has a dead man as its president, Kim Jong-Il is only head of the party and head of the army. He's not head of the state. That office belongs to his deceased father, Kim Il-Sung. It's a necrocracy, a thanatocracy. It's one short of a trinity I might add. The son is the reincarnation of the father. It is the most revolting and utter and absolute and heartless tyranny the human species has ever evolved. But at least you can f#$%ing die and leave North Korea!โ
Duffy should be sued for violating the First Amendment's Free Exercise and Establishment Clauses of the First Amendment.
I know that most of this administration are narcissists (or worse) with zero introspection who spend more time drinking and partying than reading or using their brains. But I just have so much trouble believing that they actually believe this shit and that it isn't 100% some con to shame people into accepting the domination of billionaires and oligarchs. I mean, maybe they do "believe" as far as they are able to believe in anything. But they also do a hell of a lot of projection. Who exactly thinks they're gods? Them.
I remember over a decade ago when my then local state representative was arguing against Florida accepting "Obama's dirty money," aka the Medicaid exemption. People have died because of what he did. He's a Christian nationalist whose siblings run a charter school lobbying company and whose wife runs the White nationalist* charter school that DeSantis loves to use for photo ops.
I emailed him and said "look, you claim to be a Christian. Can't you just say that Jesus appeared to you and told you to be merciful and accept the Medicaid expansion?" His aides didn't reply to my emails for a long time after that. But seriously! Why not? He could say anything he wanted and claim it was Jesus. Apparently Jesus DID tell him to meet with the Koch Brothers and the NRA and go on Fox News to tout his "Marshall's Plan" to arm teachers. Then DeSantis made him into Education Secretary. Now he's pulling ridiculously big bucks turning Florida's former honors college into a Viktor-Orban-inspired, Hillsdale-College-clone propaganda factory. Richard Corcoran. Remember his name.
*The terms "classical" and "western civilization" in education are code words for White Christian Nationalism. And I suspect White Christian Nationalism is nothing more than a tax-free-real-estate investment scam covering up human trafficking and sexual abuse.

But seriously, facilities donโt get that bad in just four years, this seems like a chronically underfunded program. You can blame Biden for not addressing it, but you can say the same for Trump, Obama, and Bush as well. But, like I said, these conditions are pretty much average conditions throughout the military. All that defense budget goes toward building fighter jets that sit at storage facilities, and the folks that contract the war machines. Not actually taking care of the servicemembers.
That painting was treated with great respect and appreciation during the move to the most appropriate place on campus, making a fuss about putting it back to a location where it didnโt belong and wasnโt respected seems to be more insulting than anything.

Hey, Duffy...
Might want to have a chat with your boss about that.
You beat me to it, NOGODZ20. Those words stuck out like the syphilis spots on Shitlerโs hands.
Thought for sure someone was going to make the observation while I was typing it. I wouldnโt have seen it until it was too late. :)
That was the first thing I thought, too.
"Before the time of GPS technology, sailors solely relied on key stars"
Astrolabe ? Compass ? Dumbass.
"In the Middle Ages, men of the sea, prayed to the Virgin Mary"
Oh ? That must be why Phoenicians, Chinese, Polynesians and Vikings were so good at crossing seas and oceans.
"it had been restored by a โreputable Pennsylvania art conservation firm"
I know about someone in Spain who could do it for dirt.
Duffy likely wouldn't know an astrolabe or a sextant if it bit him on the ass.
He might have a hard time identifying a ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ข๐ด๐ด.
I knew what a compass was and used one when I was a kid. Hell, they even taught us how to make our own homemade compasses. :)
At 9*, my nephew know what it was and he wasn't a boyscout.
* He wanted one, my sister said "no, it's too expensive and fragile".
Never mind trying to figure out which one draws a circle and which one points North!
He'd ban the word "sextant"
Whereupon sailors who are so inclined would use an octant! [Sometimes {just SOMETIMES???} these born-again types are SO DAMNED DUMB!]
Is that a Discworld reference ?
Nope. An octant is a variation on the sextant, used in navigation.

Ugh, Dave is still trying to win that argument
Heโs a lost cause. I donโt think heโs capable of change. His religion wonโt stand for any sort of critical thinking.
Or introspection, reasoning, and not being an ass like his imaginary friend!
Now he's being an Internet scold with John Smith elsewhere on this thread, whining that JS is using naughty language. JS is having none of it.
I unblocked him briefly just to read JS' comments.
Maybe that's the answer for us to finally get rid of him.
dรฉbile grift, if you can read my comments. I don't see why I should be friendly with assholes, and I am not an Atheist.
And since you don't seem to quite grasp English, maybe other languages will work.

It's not about respect. It's about domination, and marking territory.
Yes territorrial pissings are their favorite activity.

There are two kinds of people: those wo don't believe in gods and those who believe that their god has given them a brain, but refuse to use it to think!
I smell a false dichotomy in Duffer's statement there!
Someone needs to ask why, if their God is so powerful, why they are needed to do His handy work.
Same reason God needs a starship.
God needs a starship,
Elon delivers.
And it explodes.
Before it even launches.
makes me thing of Star Trek VI.
Probably because Yahweh likes to PLAY with his toys. Problem is, he has a penchant for breaking them, entirely too often.
Reminiscent of Trelane from Star Trek.
Quite so, though Trelane was alleged to be of the Q Continuum in a Star Trek novel.
Q-Squared. I've read it, though only once, unlike Q-in-law, where Q meets Luxana Troi.
๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ท๐ช๐ญ๐บ implied in the Lower Decks / Strange New Worlds crossover episode.
Ha! I'll have to re-watch that!
I soooo need to order a whole bunch of DVD's and do some serious catching up.
As soon as I have some money.
Beat me to it.

Only someone whoโs never been to see would think the North Star is the only one mariners use.
Let's put him on a boat in the southern hemisphere and have him find his way back with Polaris.
Yes, I'd like to see that!
I can ๐ซ๐ถ๐ด๐ต imagine this nincompoop trying to use a sextant.
...and now I can't stop giggling.
They have renamed it an abstainant.
It's what? A sex toy?"
If I was god, thereโd be no Duffy. Smite!!
That fugly painting was rightfully put in a basement. JFC, indeed.
