The trope of the "deserving/undeserving poor" goes back at least to Elizabethan times. It's part of the unfortunate meanness of spirit that occupies many humans. Particularly conservatives.

I have a ridiculous garden. Approximately 40 heads of garlic are growing. I harvest 3-4 pounds of lettuce every week. I have 25 pepper plants, a similar number of tomato plants. Maybe 100 potato plants that I hope will give me ~80 pounds of taters. I got 2 pounds of asparagus a week for 2 months this spring. Tomatillos, butternut squash, cukes, rhubarb, onions, a basil forest, and around 50 milkweed for the monarchs.
I supply produce to a lot of friends. One neighbor says I keep everyone in gazpacho all summer long.
I normally don't like giving people shit about how they look... but I'm gonna go ahead and add this guy to my list of acceptable exceptions.
