"Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Emhoff, who is running for president."

Anyone else notice this subtle bit of sexism? The only reason to call her "Mrs Emhoff" is to deny her agency and claim that her husband has some ownership of her.

Expand full comment

The MAGAts spent 8 years denying Obama's legitimacy. They firmly believe that no one who is a member of a tribe other than their own, is legitimately entitled to lead. They will spend all the years of her presidency denying her legitimacy, no matter how much good she does for the country.

Condescension is among their most favorite games. Problem is that, these days, that's more for Isker's audience than it would be for Ms. Harris.

Can you imagine how FRIED ON BOTH SIDES Isker would be if he addressed HER in person as "Mrs. Emhoff?!?"

Expand full comment

I wonder why Isker wasn't a quest speaker at the Trump Madison Square Garden rally? He'd fit right in with the Christian Nationalist MAGA. Also I hear the creators of South Park are suing him for copyright infringement and besmearing of Ned Flanders.

One side would excoriate him. The other would only condemn him with weasel words indicating they privately agree with him. I think you know which one is which....

I'd pay to see him debate Kamala. Let's see whose balls get crushed.

Expand full comment

His wife divorced him? Sweet! All the more reason to refer to him as "Mr. HerName". You can point out to him that it's only fair, since Marjorie Taylor and Lauren Roberts are continuing to use their former husband's surnames (respectively Greene and Bobert) after their hubbies shed THEM.

I really prefer no contact at all.

She’s not “Mrs. Harris”. She’s Vice President Harris in her political career and Kamala at home. Get it right or STFU.

So that means I am not connected to the past. My grandfather wasn't born in the US. So why isn't he objecting to Trump's candidacy? After all, his mother was born in Scotland, and his paternal grandfather was born in Germany. Oh yeah. Trump is a white man. There's the real reason for his objection. He had to pick a cherry that backed up the racism as well as the sexism. That's why he picked Deuteronomy instead of 1 Timothy.

That's exactly it. By "immigrants aren't Americans" they mean any immigrants who aren't white. White guys are just fine. (see: the muskrat from South Africa, recently in the news because he lived and worked here while overstaying a visa.) And, of course, all women aren't "real Americans" because women are property. And African Americans, etc etc aren't "real Americans" because etc etc. The whole point is to deny that a huge number of people who are here, aren't "real Americans." That was, of course, the whole point of that thing in New York that harked back to the Nazi rally there in 1939. Because *they* are the only "real Americans." Indigenous people--eh, y'know, not "real Americans" either. One could go on and on...

I had an ancestor who fought in the Civil War...on the Confederate side. I suspect Isker would consider that a connection to 'our' country but I don't. The South lost that war and today we are a union of states bound by the Constitution of the United States. Like many modern day Republicans though, I suspect that Isker would rather we get back to the pre-war South. By his logic I would advance the theory that NO Republican is fit for office.

Expand full comment

My ancestors came here from Germany in the 1840s. So far as I can tell, they had no interest at all in participating in America’s wars. They lived in little German enclaves in Illinois and Texas and kept to themselves for generations.

This should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway.

The Bible does not determine who can or cannot be president.

So all his arguments are moot, outside his circle anyway. His congregation will accept them of course.

The argument that she doesn’t have biological children only seems to apply to her because she’s a woman, since, was it, Buchanan never married or fathered any children. I’m sure there were folks who took offense to his lifelong bachelorhood, but there wasn’t the vitriol she’s seeing over it.

I would argue that Trump’s balls have been crushed between the rock of Melania and the hard place of Stormy Daniels. Not that he has ever been shown to even have a set of balls, coward that he is.

Some of the folks posting here seem angry but I can't work up anything but amusement. If I were to 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑦 or 𝑠𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑟𝑖𝑧𝑒 the evangelical right, I might come up with a preacher saying "Because Deuteronomy says castrated men can't enter the synagogue, the bible says Kamala Harris can't be President". But I would never expect anyone to mistake that satire for a serious conservative opinion. Oh, how wrong my expectation would be: they themselves seem to be competing to make more and more over the top parodies of their own positions.

I know. It should be satire, but frighteningly enough they are ALL IN. Now, it just seems to be a competition of extremes. The cult of religion has them all by the balls!

A few months ago some troll on altnet was going on about how Obama wasn't really a citizen because birthright citizenship wasn't legal in his eyes. Vance wants to end it too. It's just another bigoted "birth certificate" claim.

Expand full comment

Whether to change the Constitution to not allow it is one thing. Probably coming from a very bigoted place, but within the realm of exactly the sort of political speech the 1A was intended to protect. However, the Constitution ALSO includes that pesky 'no ex post facto' clause, which means that even if the GOP somehow got such a change done in the next Congressional session, an elected Harris would remain President.

Expand full comment

They've always been selective. Cruz was born in Canada and at one point was the leading GOP candidate for a while in 2016. McCain was born in the Panama Canal zone but that was allowed.

Isn’t it ‘interesting’ that the GOP is more than willing to overlook, obfuscate, and flat out IGNORE such obvious disqualifications within their own party — while loudly disparaging the DEM candidate and hoping nobody will notice.

And for the most part, nobody ever did.

OT: Asshole Catholic hospital caves to government pressure: https://calmatters.org/health/2024/10/emergency-abortion-lawsuit/

Too bad they couldn't do the right thing on their own.

Expand full comment

Well, good--as far as it goes. I'd bet the farm that the hospital will find some way of weaseling out of their agreement. "The woman *really* wasn't at risk of *dy*ing," and other excuses. I frankly don't trust the RCC as far as I could kick them...uphill...in a blizzard...

Expand full comment

They will fire all doctors able to do an abortion.

Expand full comment

Whereupon I suspect California would sue them AGAIN for attempting to skirt the law. If Providence St. Joseph Hospital purports to provide emergency services, then they need to demonstrate that they are competent to deliver ALL those services, at least from where I sit. After the incident with Ms. Nusslock, I think that any future similar event will be under California's microscope before you can blink.

The tolerance for Catholic bullshit is waning ... and that's a good thing.

Expand full comment

As well as nurses and others who are either able or willing. Or make objection to doing D&Cs a condition of employment. There are all kinds of ways of getting around their agreement, which is why I said above that they'll find some way of doing so. Just coincidentally there will be no one who can provide such stabilizing care, so sad.

I believe in putting blame where it belongs. I will not forgive my mom for "just following orders" and trying to kill me, but she was just a brainwashed puppet of the RCC. That was the RCC, which used my mother to deliver the bad news. But, yeah, essentially.

Figures. Hold a figurative gun to their heads and even Catholic hospitals can find it in themselves to FINALLY do the right thing. The question now is will the other Catholic hospitals in the Golden State get the message, rather than get their asses sued as well?
