Pagan Ex-Employee Sues Panera Bread for Religious Discrimination
"Your hours are being cut until you find God," said one manager.
Our little experiment with the Friendly Atheist newsletter is finally taking shape. We’re listening to your feedback and figuring out what works well for us (your newsletter authors). It seems that most readers we’ve spoken to would prefer a once-a-week newsletter that includes more content (as opposed to more frequent, smaller newsletters). So beginning next week, we’re going to switch to that format. Consider it your weekend reading, coming to you on a Friday night!
In addition, that newsletter will only be available to paying subscribers, HOWEVER, we don’t want to shut anyone out over an inability to pay! We appreciate you and understand pandemic times are hard. If you want to continue receiving the paid version of the newsletter, just send Hemant a short message at Mpromptu@gmail.com with your email address and we’ll give you a one-year gift subscription—no explanation needed :) (As always, the content will still be available for free via FriendlyAtheist.com.)
Thank you for bearing with us as we experiment with this format and work to deliver an informative and hopefully entertaining digest of news!
A well-known ex-Mormon is suing the Mormon Church for a refund of $5 million in tithe money after a whistleblower outed the Church for “stockpiling their surplus donations instead of using them for charitable works.” While the donated money probably won’t be returned to the plaintiff, the lawsuit won’t be a total wash—the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints behaves as a greedy corporation and deserves the forced transparency and negative press for it.
Christian Nationalism is one hell of a drug:
A Panera Bread employee in Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania claims in a lawsuit against the company that she was discriminated against on the basis of her Pagan beliefs. According to Tammy McCoy, her store manager and assistant manager relentlessly proselytized to her, warning her she’s “going to Hell,” and cut her hours until she “found God.” McCoy’s complaints to corporate fell on deaf ears until her eventual forced resignation.
Right-wing pastor Shane Vaughn will not be intimidated by “Jezebel Kamala” because God called on him to raise his voice against the supposed sin of the Biden administration.
A Montana district judge rejected a lawsuit from a man who attempted to sue the state for removing a roadside cross he erected as a memorial for his stepson, who died in a car crash at the same site. The man claims the removal violated his freedom of religion and freedom of expression—but when a cross is placed on a public roadside, it could easily appear as an endorsement of religion by the government, and they were right to remove it.
I read it. Now you have to read it.
Biden’s presidency is “finished” because he fell on the steps of Air Force One five days after the Ides of March, says Robin Bullock, who can hardly contain his excitement over the prospect of a President Harris.
Finally, here’s some not-so-surprising racism for you:
