Guy literally thought he was having a real wizard duel like he's at Hogwarts and thinks he won.

Ilia Volyova's avatar

I’m sure there was a wizard not very far, probably a grand one … but not of Hogwarts

Troublesh00ter's avatar

It'd be fun to take a wand bought at Universal Orlando, point it at that guy, and say, "Avada Kedavra!" and get his reaction ... just for fun, you understand! 😁

Lindsey Graham's bubble wand is free (unless Trump gave it to Darline.)

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Nah, wouldn't want that one. Almost certainly has WAY too much flex in it. I'd want a wand with SOME flex, but NOT the limp noodle that Lindsey had! 😝

foofaraw & Chiquita(ARF!)'s avatar

That's OK.

I have the Steve Schmidt t-shirt that commemorates Lindsey's "trip to fantasyland", which features the wand. (All the best war-mongers LUV Disney World!)

And the news reports....

"America is a Christian Nation!!!"

Another bible-thumping yokel who is pig-ignorant of US history, the views of the Key Founders and the documents of governance.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

I suppose I could Google it, but right now, I just muse to myself just WHEN it was when US public schools quit teaching civics and how our government was founded, why it was founded that way, and how it works.

Because that cupcake who interrupted the invocation clearly HAD NO CLUE.

Dianne Marie Leonard's avatar

Well, I do know that I had US History in 5th, 8th, and 11th grades, and Government/Civics in 12th. But that last was in 1969-70, which was before the Earth's crust cooled. During the last semester, we had to write a governing document for our political entity of choice (country, state, school district--the teacher didn't care.) There was only one rule: you don't get to know who you'll be in that entity. This was a couple of years before the article about the veil of ignorance came out, which was a couple of more years before the book on the same subject, but the ideas were knocking around even high school government classes like mine. I seriously think that these Xtian Nationalist morons don't know/care about anything of that nature. They are right where they think they belong.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

I had World History my Freshman year of high school and US History during my Junior year. I THINK that, somewhere maybe during Jr. High we had Civics, but drat it, I can't remember just WHEN.

And I find that bothersome.

Dianne Marie Leonard's avatar

Funny how that works, the more so as one ages. A couple of weeks ago, I told my therapist about something and stated that it had happened during 6th grade, in the 1963-64 school year. She asked, "How do you remember that?" I told her, "You know how sometimes people remember where they were when their world was shaken? Well, that incident happened the year that JFK was assassinated, and I have clear memories of that. So, it's just quick extrapolation on my part." Younger folk remember the second 9/11 sometimes. (The first was in 1973, which I also remember.) Geez Louise. Getting old is not for sissies.

"America is a Christian Nation!" in this particular context would also prohibit Jewish invocations, not just Satanic ones.

So basically a troll and a manichean found each other … I can clap !

The hell of it is, that "toy" never should have been there in the first place. Invocations have, I would wager WITHOUT EXCEPTION, been proposed and executed initially EXCLUSIVELY BY CHRISTIANS. If a Jew, Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist ever pushed inserting an invocation to start a city council or school board meeting or any other public function, such an action would have caused national headlines. Yet such a thing has never happened ... BECAUSE CHRISTIANS THINK IT'S WITHIN THEIR PURVIEW.

It should go without saying that I agree with Mr. Payne. The invocation needs to go, and the opening statement of a city council meeting would be better off with: "Let this meeting come to order. What business is before us today?"

I've encountered toddlers who were more mature than Herrell.

Saying religion infantalizes is almost an insult...to infants.

The evidence seems to indicate not that they don't care about the Christian interference. They said nothing during the interruption, and law enforcement (whose salaries are authorized by the council members) allowed the disruption to continue for a whole before escorting Herrell out. On top of that, Mayor Foote is on record saying effectively that non-Christians are not welcome in Ottumwa. Radar would be ashamed.

By the time Walter O'Reilly left the 4077th MASH, he was not the soft-spoken corporal that we had seen at the beginning of the series (and the war). He was seasoned and mature.

And seeing this in his home town, he would be PISSED!

These MAGA-types don't generally put a great deal of stock in the concept of "silence".

Maltnothops's avatar

Especially the bit about failing to remain silent and thereby removing all doubt about one’s foolishness.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Since Trump, Republicans and MAGA don’t hesitate to fat-shame, I’d like to return the favor and tell Herrell (in Trump’s voice): “Quiet piggy! Quiet!”

Daniel Rotter's avatar

It would be funny (to me, anyway) if ol' Jeremy is Catholic, given that "gluttony" is one of the "7 Deadly Sins."

Virgin Monk Boy's avatar

Imagine being so devoted to Jesus that you interrupt someone else's prayer by screaming the prayer Jesus taught. Apparently, “forgive us our trespasses” now comes with an exemption for trespassing on everyone else's religious freedom. And here's the delicious irony: the Satanist was defending liberty of conscience while the Christian was demonstrating precisely why it needs defending. Jesus specifically warned against making a public spectacle of prayer in Matthew 6:5. But why bother reading the Sermon on the Mount when you can turn a city council meeting into an audition for the Spanish Inquisition?

Awww, c'mon! Da poor guy's fee-fees were hurt! Ain't you got no compsshun??? [/massive sarcasm!]

There ain’t no hate like Christian love.

Daniel Rotter's avatar

Jeremy might have been taught the Bible growing up, but he certainly wasn't taught about things like, "politeness," "propriety," and "manners."

Lynn Veit's avatar

He was taught the Bible as if it were the Law of the Land and he is one of Gawd's "enforcers."

Our Constitution is pretty clear with regard to religion: Where We Allow One We Allow All. 🫡

oraxx's avatar

As if the world needed any more examples of why it's always a bad idea to delegate any part of your thinking to the clergy. These people see their religion as the dead-certain answer to every question, and would be only too happy to make themselves masters of us all.

They ignore that part of Leviticus (along with the part that says foreigners are not supposed to be mistreated and instead loved and treated as native-born) to concentrate on the part about teh gayz.

Here’s a thought: if the US Constitution Bill of Rights guarantees Freedom of (& from) Religion, wouldn’t someone acting to deny someone else’s rights be an enemy, probably domestic, of the big C & 1A?

Are such actions hate crimes or domestic terrorism?

Just wondering … 🤔

Obviously, a few of us southerners could have really used $5,000....

NOGODZ20's avatar

You’d never have gotten it. There isn’t enough money in the treasury to cover it. Trump lied. Just like he lied about all those other cheques.
