Another pious paragon of virtue bites the dust. I will never understand why people willingly delegate an important part of their thinking to the clergy. They are as deeply flawed as every other human being, and if anything they’re bigger hypocrites.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Worse, most clergy have about as much expertise in genuine counseling as could be kept in a Lilliputian thimble, and that sure looks like the case here.

oraxx's avatar

I have a cousin who is an Episcopal Priest. She has a PhD from Yale in some useless subject, and she engages in counseling. By any objective standard, she’s a nut case.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Bloody hell. To think of the level of trust some people place in priests. The mind doth truly boggle.

Have you seen the work Rwandan President Paul Kagame has been doing? I wish it could happen here.

"Rwandan President Paul Kagame has overseen the closure of over 6,000 to 10,000 churches and mosques since roughly 2018, citing a need to regulate religious institutions, enforce health and safety standards, and stop the commercialization of faith. The crackdown targets unregistered, unregulated, and structurally unsafe places of worship, requiring leaders to have formal theological training.

...

Key Details of the Shutdowns:

Scale: Reports indicate over 6,000 to 10,000 churches and mosques have been closed, primarily in the Kigali area and nationwide, as part of a continued effort to regulate the sector.

Reasons for Closure: Authorities cited lack of operating licenses, poor physical infrastructure (hygiene, noise, safety), and, in some cases, fraudulent activities where leaders exploited followers.

Theology Degrees: President Kagame has mandated that religious leaders, particularly those heading evangelical churches, possess a theology degree to operate, stating that faith should not be a business.

Government Action: The Rwanda Governance Board, which oversees faith-based organizations, has stated that these actions are not targeting any specific religion but aiming to bring order to the religious sector."

John Smith's avatar

The Rwandans learned a brutal lesson during the war; that the religious leaders on both sides were using religion to fan the fire of war. So perhaps this is a way to prevent the various religious leaders from to promoting sectarian violence! Source: Wikipedia: Religious strife in Rwanda

Troublesh00ter's avatar

That is very damned extraordinary! Can you imagine the caterwauling that would happen if Kagame's strategy were employed in the US? Megapreachers would be screaming "PERSECUTION!!!" at the top of their lungs from coast to coast!

Trump would never do it, of course ... but it damned well SHOULD be done!

James's avatar

At the same time, the I Amendment prevents government meddling in religion (other than obvious things like crime).

Mandating things like a theology degree is the government saying who constitutes a valid religious leader, which would be unconstitutional.

Moreover, if such a law was passed here to permit such restrictions on religious organisations and people, that law would be weaponised the next day to shut down disfavoured religious organisations.

I can see such a law being used to shut down NON-religious organisations, because they "preach secularism" (fitting into the claims that "atheism is a religion").

On the other hand, "commercialisation of faith" might be a way to go after huge corporations (since capitalism acts much like a religion, such as the belief "free unregulated markets are the best markets" and cherry-picking Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" to uphold that. The Libertarian Party would go off the rails if you tried to hold Ayn Rand to that standard.

Can you imagine if in the USA you banned the worship of money? /s

Anyway, the I Amendment does not define how faith should be expressed. It just says "Congress shall make no law" &c.

Once got reprimanded privately by a pastor as a kid because I didn't take or sign an oath to be sexually "pure" until marriage.

I pointed to the scripture where Jesus told his followers not to take oaths at all as it was a sin. `

What was the pastor's reaction to that?

Purity culture nonsense does not excuse the horrible acts perpetrated by Peternel's son, but it does help to explain them. Purity culture nonsense blinded Peternel to the criminality lurking within his son, and prevented him from seeking the professional help that his son may have benefited from. This aided his son in doing what he did.

It is the purity culture nonsense that also led Peternel to apologize to hos congregation for having had the audacity to make a 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 recording of consensual sex with his wife, the only type of sex that same purity culture nonsense insists is acceptable.

I don't quite understand how sexy images of yourself and your wife, intended only for your personal use, violates purity culture.

They do allow sex for enjoyment as long as it's within a hetero marriage. But maybe, just maybe, they prohibit recording the act because they might masturbate while looking at it.

Well, it was anti-biblical, as there was only one wife involved and there was consent. Now of he had raided a near by village, took a war bride as he slaughtered her brothers and father, then shaved her head, and only then recorded fucking her, then everything would be ok.

Die Anyway's avatar

I want to go to your church.

Bensnewlogin's avatar

There is so much to unpack here on my 1st cup of coffee. Hemant simply has no pity on me. But let’s start here. In my best Goofy voice: “Gorsh! Who woulda thunk that a person obsessed about sex would be obsessed about sex? It’s diabolical, I tells ya! Diabolical!”

And the debbil made him do it!

So much to say about this.

First, it’s pretty clear where Junior got his sex obsession. But the real question is where did he get the sex videos? His son, “who was high at the time“, managed to hack into his parents private account. How did he even know about the existence of this private account? How did he know what was in it? Did he know what he would find? Was it really not so private? And why were those so many of them? Not to mention, his mom and dad? I admit, dad is kind of hot in a creepy, decrepit straight boy sort of way, but still, More questions than answers.

Second, the church make sure to refer to Peter-nelly’s “adult” son. Nothing to see here. No children involved. Keep those donations cumming— erm, coming!

“Dude” is obsessed with sexuality and kids among the rest of his obsessions with sexuality and fill in the blank. And somehow, his “adult“ son didn’t manage to escape that. That’s like saying water couldn’t possibly be wet.

And there’s a kicker here to this obsession with sexuality: he has to go through a “restorative“ process. That certainly reads like reeducation to me, but I’m one of those damn leftists. But I remember another prominent pastor who went through a restorative process: Haggard Ted. He went through it if I recall three times, and was declared completely heterosexual. It only took God three times to change him. And of course, sex scandals followed Haggard Ted anyway because Haggard Ted was Haggard Ted. Finally, Ted admitted to being bisexual. Better than being trisexual I guess, because that would mean he would tri anything.

all of that leads back to my first question: a man obsessed with sex, to the point where he asks teenagers about what they’re doing when they’re making the beast with two backs, or in Christian terms, having a resurrection of the flesh… oh, wait! Girls don’t experience the resurrection of the flesh, only boys do. And he can’t ask the boys about it because that would be pervy.

This Is a man who is obsessed with sex. Sex is dirty. Sex is a sin. Sin means he gets special attention from the infinite creator of the entire infinite universe, who also is obsessed with sex, although not with war, feeding starving people, or his inability to clearly state his word for everyone and all time. And the beauty of it all is that he gets to sin and repent and re-sin and repent, and God will always assure him that he’s God‘s special little boy. Because he’s managed to convince himself that he’s god’s special little boy.

I would say, “scribes! Pharisees! Hypocrites!” but that would be too kind. Because this is not about mere hypocrisy, which I have said repeatedly would be refreshingly honest. This is about moral corruption. He was asking those questions of those girls because he was getting off on it. Which means he was looking with lust at a woman not his wife. Which means he doesn’t believe the product that he’s selling at all.

Linda's avatar

Way too much to unpack. In addition to all the above, do we really believe the sex between him and his wife is exactly “consensual”? I mean really consensual. It’s very possible she’s like Ted Bundy’s wife, who said she never saw any “strange behavior” from him.

Lynn Veit's avatar

"Keep those donations cumming— erm, coming!"

"Better than being trisexual I guess, because that would mean he would tri anything."

😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

Love it! These days, I am always grateful for any small moments of laughter and lightheartedness that cum -- erm, come my way. You definitely have a way with words!

When they are taught that the most forbidden thing they can do is sex that is not between a husband and a wife (they even forbid solo sex), the forbidden fruit desire brings about obsession.

Re porn: "That presumably refers to people who watch it or are addicted to it."

As far as they are concerned, if you watch so much as one porn video, you are addicted to porn.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Christians desperately need a secular course in sex education. The church is letting them down and doing them a grave disservice.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

It also needs a course in HUMANITY and HUMANISM, not that they want it. Again, when ideology runs headlong into reality and human beings, it ain't the ideology that gets hurt.

Joe King's avatar

The very first lesson in that course should be that women, children, and POCs are all actually people.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

We see that. If they don't, it's because they've been taught NOT TO.

Runfastandwin's avatar

My first (uncharitable) thought was: did the wife consent to being filmed?

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

And how much cajoling did it take if she did? Years of wearing her down to finally agree to the tapings.

Lynn Veit's avatar

Could have been how the son realized there were tapes in the first place, if he overheard one of those "wearing down" sessions.

However, most normal kids, if they found out such existed, would be put off. REALLY put off. Watching one's parents having sex is NOT something they even want to think about, let alone witness.

Joan the Dork's avatar

A reasonable concern to raise, considering.

JoyLynn's avatar

I wouldn't say uncharitable. I would say quite likely. Probably married young before she knew what she liked and raised to be submissive to her husband, being manipulated into agreeing rather than truly consenting.

Linda's avatar

You know who asks young girls about their sexual habits? Sexual predators. I know as I was once a young girl.

Whitney's avatar

Even in a Christian paradigm, this is just crazy.

This guy is with his wife, the one person he's allowed under Christian ideology to be intimate with, and he's apologizing for it? What? The only thing left to assume at this point is that his church actually disapproves of all intimate encounters, and that babies are all supposed to be the immaculately-conceived progeny of Jesus, I guess. That attitude is it really isn't something taught by Jesus, this is from Paul; and we all remember what a nasty misogynist Paul was, right?

Frightening just how much of this tracks with what I was taught as a child forced to attend church twice every Sunday. Still crazy, of course, but it does track.

JoyLynn's avatar

Who else might he show the recordings to, how much did he coerce his (submissive?) wife to be recorded and how could he use them to persuade her to do things she'd rather not?
