Once again we see the disconnect between religion and morality playing out on more than one level. First the church ignored the girl, then they endangered their students by keeping a rapist on their staff, and last but not least, their first instinct was to protect the abuser.
Not directly, but the now 17 year old is unable to go to school in person and has difficulty trusting people. The damage the school did will likely take decades to heal.
Teachers and administrators are mandated reporters in Colorado. The fact that the pastor's first reaction, after calling the victim a liar, was to tell the parents not to report the rape contradicts the school's claim that they followed all mandatory reporting requirements.
When are parents going to learn to call the police themselves when children report sexual assault? When are people going to learn you can't trust schools, especially religious ones, to protect children and not just themselves?
Here we have another sad, despicable example of moral cowardice where a church school not only didn't protect its underage students but schemed to hide its assets against liability. What's that adage again? "With or without religion good people will do good, evil people will do evil, but for good people to do evil, that takes religion." This is a case in point. Horrifying.
So, after Pastor Asshat lied and got caught lying, the church doubles down and lies about his lying. Demonstrating pretty conclusively that the lying for Jesus is systemic and not just a few bad actors.
This is why purity culture is harmful. The entire church leadership, regardless of the truth, sees a 13 year old child as an evil temptress who is out to get them, while an adult sexual predator is righteous and blameless, because the pastor once scolded him for inappropriate behavior.
Excellent point. It’s purity culture that has plagued us both within and outside of these churches. It’s a moral rot that is never addressed, examined, or held accountable.
I become so enraged when I read about these rapes of children by persons in authority. The church’s response is so similar to what my church did with friends (fortunately not me) when they were sexually assaulted back in the 70s in rural Idaho. I’d hoped religious leaders had outgrown that tendency to keep families intact and a breadwinner employed instead of in prison, but I guess not. Kids were and still are treated as commodities. I hate religion

This is getting to be SOP, not just for Catholic churches but apparently, these Lutherans want to use the same playbook. The behavior of the church as a whole is nothing less than despicable, and I would sincerely hope that a civil action is filed against them.

OT: I've decided on a new strategy to deal with walnuts. Usually, I wait until they all fall and spend a day or two with a rake and shovel. Backbreaking stuff. Now I'm going to use my morning, waiting for the coffee to brew time to pick up walnuts little by little. Got about 20 off the ground this morning and picked about the same number off of low hanging branches. We'll see how it goes.
