Hope FFRF wins. All of these board members should be personally liable. Economic pain is the only way to make zealots pay attention.

FFRF's legal bills should be paid by all the board members who chose to litigate, both the original filing and now this ham handed attempt. Too bad it will be the taxpayers who have to foot the bill. And the MAGATs on the board will coast to reelection on the persecution fantasy. "Look at all the money those evil atheists from out if town took from us!"

When the Wall of Separation Between Church and State was erected with the enactment of the Constitution, the US population was 3.9 million and Megachurches were unheard of. It is, of course more Dominionist Wak-A-Mole and sooner or later one or another group of them will get one of these cases in front of the 6 corrupt MAGA Supremes. I have no great hope the Wall will stand. If we somehow survive the evil of the tRump era, we are going to need a completely new Constitution to address the gross corruption, malfeasance, and christianist nonsense.

Christians are always eager to mark their territory by inserting their prayer where ever they can. They seem to believe this somehow makes the world a better place. I would like to see them present some historical basis for this assumption. How many prayers, do you suppose, were offered up during the Holocaust, and to what effect?

I don’t think most Christians have any interest in making the world a better place as they don’t place much (any?) value on this life. It’s just a waiting room for something better to come.

Absolutely! In fact, the 2 sides need to write their proposed constitutions before the national referendum calling on the various states to call the convention. They should be out there where people can see what they are voting for.

Sure the religious will put forth a constitution, just not the one that they would actually enact. The religious would lie through their teeth to put a fake constitution forward; when the people vote for “that” constitution, after the religious win then the religious would switch the constitution with the one that the religious truly want to use. I would not trust the religious to tell the truth about their objectives no farther than I could throw them!

The food thing really depends upon how observant the owners and/or target market are. People who don’t care about keeping kosher will happily spend money in a kosher deli. But the ones who do care won’t patronize a non-kosher deli.

I remember an anecdote in “From Beirut to Jerusalem” about a non-observant family in Israel serving pork chops at the son’s bar mitzvah dinner because that was his favorite dish. “White steak”.

Zealots will be zealots, I guess ... though in THIS case, their zealotry more than likely got them billed for court costs and maybe a fine or three. This repeated attempt to violate the Constitutional sanction against prayer and forced religious expression at school board meetings was old news years ago, and yet the Chino school board persists, probably because they have no financial skin in the game and the fines and court costs will come out of the city's coffers in the end.

THAT NEEDS TO CHANGE. If there were a severe PERSONAL monetary impact on those school board members, this story would likely be VERY different. I genuinely wonder if anyone in Chino would even consider such a thing ... and frankly, I'm dubious.

Doesn’t anyone normal run for school board in Chino Valley? I’ve never heard of voting biblically either. Assuming it means your pastor gets to buy your vote. 🙄

Since the board keeps losing, people should take that as a sign to vote them out next time and vote in people who actually give a shit about Chino’s schools.

Expand full comment
ericc's avatar

I expect many normal folk do. But it sounds like the church has a bit of a lock on local elections. 8,000 voting members when the county regularly sees only 11,000 total votes in local races means they're going to win any time they put up a candidate and the congregation supports that person.

It's basically the "corporate town" problem, only the corporation here is the church.

Waaaaaaay before this "voting biblically" shit was said out loud, there were "Christian Voting Guides" available on a table in the vestibule of our church (also published in our local newspaper). They would be mentioned in passing during the service, and anybody who wanted one was encouraged to help themselves. (This was about the time of middle school for me, so perhaps the mid to late 70's.) During my high school years I was already overhearing snippets of conversation about "stealth campaigns" (where one ran for local office without mentioning anything about one's religious agenda) to take over local school boards and town councils.

This shit has been going on in small religious towns since Jesus was a corporal. Now that it's out in the open, they don't give a damn about being coy. They think they've already been handed a victory because they don't have to hide it anymore, and "gawd is on OUR side!"
