The city’s attempt to shut down the case has failed, which means allegations of religious favoritism and missing records are headed to the discovery phase
Again, this is Christians walking into a space and thinking that they own it. Christians think that they (they alone) can dictate who can use the space, how the space is used, and who is allowed in that space! Well, jesusfuckers I hate to break it to you that a PUBLIC SPACE IS FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC, even those people that you hate. I know that Christians think that Human Rights are for Christians only, but again it is for everyone, regardless of what you goddamm jesusfuckers think! I am getting really pissed that we (everyone who isn’t a fucking MAGAS) have to keep reminding you dumbasses about that!😠
I can't imagine that this would EVER happen in the Deep South, and I've been occasionally discouraged that it might ever happen in the North or in some place like California. That it has happened in Boston is a BIG ray of sunshine to me, never mind a message to the Christian Reich that they do not own the whole enchilada.
CNs in more liberal states are extra pissed off about their circumstances or chances of being fascists there, so they go harder and they are “persecuted” more deeply. It’s the same with attacks on abortion clinics in blue states and cities. The behavior and violence becomes more extreme in these cases.
I hesitate to pin this exclusively on Christians. I think it's probably pretty common human bias to think that 'majority rule - no limits' is a perfectly fair thing when you're in the majority, and only realize the value of guardrails on it when you're in the minority.
Sure ok, but the Serena Joy’s of the world don’t actually hold any real power. They are there to hold the line. Eventually, they will get their fingers cut off too. Last I checked, the only person serving any prison time for “Epstein” was a woman.
Yes. If you're part of a protected group, you probably think you'll be fine. Your rights won't be affected if they're being a bit bashed around a bit, after all, it'll just affect other people.
You know that little poem? The one which starts with 'First they came for'? It's a classic for a reason.
I'd like to dispute that. In (Western) Europe, the place which was devastated within living memory, where millions of people got killed, millions were injured and traumatised and millions had to flee their homes, we are very aware of that history.
And as a result we have got the ECHR, the European Convention of Human Rights. It's a safeguard against the next time someone starts saying that rights are only for certain people.
Yes Europe has a very bloody history! The extreme right Christian political parties are trying to remove that or leave the E.U so that they won’t have to obey that convention!
This one sounds rather pedantic, but the ECHR is not an EU rule, it's a different organisation other than the EU, it's the Council of Europe. There are lots more countries who are members of the Council of Europe rather than the EU - basically all the countries apart from Belarus and Russia. Belarus never joined and Russia was thrown out a few years ago.
Generally across Europe politics is quite secular. There are very few exceptions, probably the most overtly christian party I'm aware of is PiS in Poland. There could be others, which are more overtly christian, but they're so small or so insignificant that they are not attracting any attention.
There are some parties who have 'christian' in their name, probably the largest one are the 'christian democrats' (CDU) in Germany. (There's an interesting history why they're called that, I'll happily expand on that in a different post if anyone is interested.) But they're not actually proposing any real 'christian' policies, certainly not the ones which you as Americans would recognise as such. Their policies are a bit to the right of social-democratic parties such as the my local SNP.
As regards leaving the EU, I cannot think of any party which seriously suggests that a current EU member considers leaving the organisation. Even the likes of Marine le Pen, who might have argued for this a few years ago, has dropped the demand. And the likes of the AfD or the Dutch equivalent or anyone else have seen how Brexit has worked out (badly!!) and thus the demand for leaving got dropped a while ago.
What are you talking about? Muslims regularly do what our evangelicals are trying to do - in countries where Muslims are the majority. That's my point: the attitude of "we're the majority, society should bend towards us" is an attitude not limited to evangelicals or Christians. It seems to crop up just about any time some majority group has a distinct or well-defined identity. WWIIs 𝑁𝑢𝑟 𝑓𝑢̈𝑟 𝐷𝑒𝑢𝑡𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑒 is a non-religious example. India's another example: technically, their constitution is religiously neutral, but they often pass laws that focus on solving Hindu problems or support Hindu culture. So they have a Hindu Marriage Act but you'll look in vain for a Christian Marriage Act, despite there being 28 million Christians there.
"Well, in Western Europe and the Americas it is Christianity that is dominant"
Can't speak for the rest of Europe, but in the UK Christianity scores less than "no religion" in surveys like the "British Social Attitudes Survey".
It is the biggest religion (if you lump all the denominations together), but only a fraction of those who identify as Christian attend church with any regularity.
I deleted my previous comment above! I am wrong about Western Europe, I thought the majority of European countries were Christian. If not, then that is better news than I hope for!
Addendum: If ICE can break down doors without a proper warrant, then you're not secure in your house. If you argue that ICE can only batter down the doors of houses with immigrants and that you're a citizen and that you're fine. Maybe. Until law enforcement batters down YOUR house and claim that they misread the house number and street sign .... just an honest mistake, your honour. No harm intended.
I've lost count on the number of conversations I had with people who were complaining that the ECHR (or similar human rights protections) was protecting criminals, scumbags and other unpleasant people.
And that's exactly their purpose, they're there to protect those people. Because only when it's ensured that those scumbags and other unpleasant people have got rights, then it is certain that you will have rights.
If you're a member of a protected group it is likely that your rights will not be trampled on, but then that situation can change. That little poem 'first they came for ...' is a classic for a reason.
Not at all for that subset of Christians who will claim that this is persecution and use it to "rally the faithful" and rake in the bucks. They haven't grasped that religious freedom applies to all not just them.
It's long since gotten to the point where the cry of "PERSECUTION" by butt-hurt Christians should damned well be IGNORED and especially by the court system. Seriously, how many frivolous lawsuits have been filed because some weepy Karen Christian hasn't gotten her way with a cherry on top?
A signal to the Christian Nationalist community that they no longer rule the roost is as necessary as indicating that The Satanic Temple as as much right to a place at the table as Christians do.
Christians just presume they are entitled to some overriding privilege… And christianists are constantly looking for any chink in the armor of church-state separation. And all over an invisible and otherwise undetectable god. It is inculcated idiocy.
oraxx just commented: "No group operates under the assumption they are entitled to a privileged place in this country quite like the evangelicals." And indeed, no group is quite so utterly SPOILED ROTTEN as Christians are and especially evangelicals. They live in communities which are so exclusively Christian that nothing else impinges on their individual and collective consciousnesses. As a result, they think they're all that the US is made up of, and they get utterly NUTZ when they discover, much to their chagrin, that they are NOT.
All this just makes teaching them the lesson that they are NOT the King of the Hill all the more necessary.
Any time they are made aware that others exist, they throw a tantrum and speak out loud their ideal that no one else should be in America. They live in a bubble providing the illusion that they are the only ones here and they think that’s how it should be. It’s the second part that is the problem because they now are getting the power they desperately desire to actually start making it a reality. Believe the way we tell you or die. They don’t even want to give the option of leave anymore, as we are looking at the concentration camps of the past.
If third party flags without proclamations are being flown, why no TST flag? I know why they aren't producing records, they granted permission verbally and outside of council deliberations to avoid a paper trail. Without the documentation, they think they can get away with discrimination since the official policy on paper doesn't discriminate. Kind of like how the NSGOP claims institutional racism doesn't exist because Congress passed the Civil Rights Avt of 1964.
Why no TST flag? Because the powers that be in Boston don't want the flag of the "enemy" to be flown. Probably getting massive pressure from Archbishop Henning, the top guy in the Archdiocese.
If Henning wants to let his britches get a bit too big, I would remind him of some reportage, done by the Spotlight group of the Boston Globe, regarding certain members of his organization. I would mention that his outfit is light-years away from Simon-pure, and that the crap that the Globe reported on a quarter-century ago is likely STILL going on, whether Henning wants to admit to that or not.
It may well be that The Satanic Temple is vastly more moral than the Archdiocese of Boston can dream of being.
The Satanic Temple being more moral than the Archdiocese of Boston is a really low bar. Is TST willing to turn over child rapers? Yes. See? Light years more moral.
Troublesh00ter, Spot on with these comments about the Catholic abuse story told by Boston Globe. The movie, called Spotlight is a great one to watch all about this!
It seems the Boston is attempting a "what procedure?" strategy. Just pretend they don't have one whenever anyone criticizes it. Glad the judge didn't fall for it.
TST and their lawyers should definitely be going out to the site and photographing the flags every day. It's practically guaranteed the city will keep doing it.
I have to imagine that people in the office probably just let their own bigotry get in the way of doing their job. The fact that they are trying to hide behind no application being found is such bad faith here. Once the city finds out who was responsible for discriminating against TST, I hope all involved get fired and lose their city pension and benefits.
They need to show a little respect… II Corinthians 4:4 clearly states “Satan, who is the god of this world…” he may have “blinded men’s’ eyes to the scripture, but, it still makes him a god. Until Jeebus finally puts in an appearance and tosses Ol’ Satan into the lake of fire, he still would seem to have hegemony over the Earth.
Author Rick Riordan (he of the Gods of Olympus series, among others) makes his home in Boston. Would love to see an orange Camp Half-Blood flag wave in the breeze. :)
I’m confused. Boston refused the Christian flag and got sued. But they didn’t change their policy until the Satanists wanted to fly their flag, then they decided to officially end the public forum. But they didn’t actually end the public forum, they just stopped making it easy for groups to apply to fly their flags or keep track of who flys a flag and just arbitrarily fly whatever flags they want to, but still refuse the Satanist’s flag. Do they want religious flags or not?
Yeah, I’m not that confused, just stop flying flags from outside groups.
I guess all my mental bandwidth is expended on work and memorizing my monologues. It doesn’t help that I have to cover for my supervisor this week, she’s on vacation and we are on dress rehearsals for Friday’s opening night.
Anyway, wish me luck for tomorrow, but make it theatrical.
Jesus presumably did not care for oaths. He said they were a sin. Actually, if I recall correctly, his translated words were that they "were from the Evil one."
I wonder how he would feel about his followers putting up flags in his name. I especially wonder how he'd feel about that in a nation that hates the poor, throws the hungry crumbs, burdens the sick with bills and crippling debt so a handful of people can be wealthy, treats prisoners worse than dogs, murders the innocent regularly, and inflicts suffering and misery on the stranger.
Course, I wonder how long it would take for American Christians to kill him if he ever did come again... wouldn't it be ironic if the long awaited second coming happened long ago and they lynched their savior?
If ICE doesn’t execute him for his skin color and language. ICE seems very willing to use deadly force on people, so I am sure ICE would use deadly force on jeezyboy’s ass!
What gets me is all the ICE officers who attack people on their driveways and at their jobs saying “you have an accent, show me your papers” in a heavy accent matching their targets’ accents. Do you really think donning that “uniform” and mask will protect you from being thrown in with these people you’re terrorizing? Plenty of wealthy Jewish people who aided the Nazis were surprised when they were loaded up on rail cars and showed the showers. It’s like they can’t see, history is full of folks rushing to throw their own under the bus assuming they will be spared a tire. They are never spared.
Not unlike the person in the White House, we always seem to end up with incompetents in our governments. They're people who, rather than follow the Constitution, wish to foist their viewpoint on everyone. They think they have some divine right to pick and choose what is free speech, and what is unacceptable according to their religious views rather than the rules that govern our secular government institutions. I'm glad Boston has no other pressing issues they have to deal with. I'm sure if I were a tax paying citizen this would truly make me feel great about how my money is being spent.
You know, if it wasn't for the expense I'd wish we had a few controversies like this. But I doubt too many people here of even heard of a "Christian" flag. And we don't really do flags like you do in the US. I did an assignment on flags when I was doing my dotage degree, and the number of empty flagpoles around the place – official ones – where nobody could be bothered putting flags on them. About every small old-fashioned ball has a flagpole, didn't see a flag on any of them. Public buildings often have the New Zealand flag, but there is usually only one flagpole and only very occasionally as another flag raced on them. I guess we're just not flag people.I live in a suburb of about 20,000 people and you could count the number of flags and people's gardens on the fingers of one hand. And often that's a flag raised by an immigrant of their native country. Or a Maori independence flag which people get a bit upset about sometimes. The guy next door to a friend of mine has a skull and cross bones. I rather like that.
The Christian flags? If there's one thing that unites conservatives and progressives in NZ its hatred of people like "bishop" Tamaki. About the only thing that does but it's a welcome change from the usual online sparring.
My final year of parochial school all the boys in class (we graduated a whopping 31 students that year and at least half of them were female) had to take turns on the flag team. That meant we had to show up before school started to raise the flag, then take it down at sunset. We had to make sure it didn't ever touch the ground, tie it on the ropes to raise and lower it correctly, and I remember them making us run out and take the flag down if it started to rain. They didn't care if we got wet, but the flag wasn't to stay out in the rain.
Edit: I think there were 12 boys in my grammar school graduating class but I'm checking that with my oldest friend who was also in that class.
I have a vague memory of flags flying in various schools I attended, but I think it was largely at the discretion of the principal and many of them didn't bother.
Law of unintended consequences. Ain't it a bitch, Christians?
Again, this is Christians walking into a space and thinking that they own it. Agreed, it’s specifically white wealthy Christian Nationalists who think they are superior to Everyone in every possible way in the USA.
Adding men haha (that part’s obvious)
It is not just men.
Sure ok, but the Serena Joy’s of the world don’t actually hold any real power. They are there to hold the line. Eventually, they will get their fingers cut off too. Last I checked, the only person serving any prison time for “Epstein” was a woman.

I will concede that yes in other countries where religious are the majority in their countries that is also happening! See above!
God damm I hate autocorrect! It keeps correcting the right word I want with something else!

Reminds me of the jesusfuckers who “claimed” a public beach as their private property and built crucifix-shaped pier on it.

Amen...so to speak.
It should be ignored but won't as long as there's a possibility that the current Supreme Court could rule on a case.
👍🏼😄
Christians just presume they are entitled to some overriding privilege… And christianists are constantly looking for any chink in the armor of church-state separation. And all over an invisible and otherwise undetectable god. It is inculcated idiocy.
Christians, once again, acting like that dipshit spoiled brat in preschool who'd rather break all the toys than let the other kids play with them too.

[TS shakes his head, a wan smile on his face.] Are we having FUN yet? 😖
Non-religious make up 30% of U.S. population (according to pew research) 20% are Catholic, 2% Jews. We need to be VERY VISIBLE!

I've had Spotlight on Blu-ray ever since it came out. It's a powerful movie, exceptionally well done.
Everyone should watch it. Especially those who remain with the Catholic Church!

Won Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay Oscars.

Get rid of that third flagpole and be done with it. Lord knows the Christo-fascists won’t ever change.
...still can't think of yellow ribbons without my mind going back to this:

I’m confused. Boston refused the Christian flag and got sued. But they didn’t change their policy until the Satanists wanted to fly their flag, then they decided to officially end the public forum. But they didn’t actually end the public forum, they just stopped making it easy for groups to apply to fly their flags or keep track of who flys a flag and just arbitrarily fly whatever flags they want to, but still refuse the Satanist’s flag. Do they want religious flags or not?
Yeah, I’m not that confused, just stop flying flags from outside groups.
"I’m confused." - Socks first, then shoes. : )

Which show is this?
This is C’est la Vie, an ensemble production. It’s t the theater downtown on the square. The Bartell.
Made me laugh, thank you!
Well, at last she’s not both dazed AND confused.
That's not true.
Wadaya mean, I can't wear my underwear on the outside??? 😠
Superheroes do it, after all.
Wasn't it Superman who started that trend?
Yup. He was the trendsetter. The design was based on circus strongmen of the 30's.
At this point ICE would deport him faster than shit through a goose. He's brown and he talks funny!
If ICE doesn’t execute him for his skin color and language. ICE seems very willing to use deadly force on people, so I am sure ICE would use deadly force on jeezyboy’s ass!
Can you imagine an ICE officer, shouting out to a surrounding crowd, "Anyone here speak Aramaic?!?" 🤪
The leopards will eat other leopards' faces if given a chance.
Something my BIL refuses to learn.
We should be getting the atheist flag out there too! The one I like "Science-Like Religion, But Real"
How about this one:

The Scientatheist flag?
Hey, I'm not picky. We can go with whatever WORKS. That simple.
Seems awfully familiar. :)
Does it, really?!? 😁
I seriously doubt most people would recognize it for what it is. They would most likely think it has something to do with Star Trek.
I like that one too!!

I think I could make one of those with the supplies in my garage. How soon do we need it?
Yesterday
BINGO!
Boston can always plead the devil made them do it at trial. It won’t work, but it would be funny.
Devils? That's New Jersey.
The city of Boston has sure wasted a lot of money that could've been spent filling potholes on ideological bullshit.
Haven't you heard, Boston is pothole free. ; )
Oh my! Praise the LORD!!
*coughs*

Finally! Relief for those with moobs. Dear Leader rejoices!
Manzier!
Bro!
