"To protect their bottom line"

"designed to delay, delay, and further delay"

Two things the catholic church is good for. Jealous that your insurer may be better at it ?

NOGODZ20's avatar

"*designed to delay, delay, delay, and further delay"

Sounds like the DOJ with the Epstein files (they're now saying they may need weeks to release those files. Maybe they learned those delaying tactics from Holy Mother Church).

larry parker's avatar

Oopsie, we found another million files.

The Epistler's avatar

I heard they found 'em in Trump's saggy skidmarked y-fronts.

Joan the Dork's avatar

What gets me is that they've had all year to redact Chump's name from those files, but they waited until Congress forced the issue to even get started. Obviously- the slapdash nature of the redactions now, and the chaotic releases they often backtrack, are so desperately incompetent that it just reeks of a kid doing their homework five minutes before class after procrastinating for weeks on the assignment. They honestly didn't think anyone would ever make them do it.

If they didn't take the time to do the coverup, when Johnson&Co. bought them 𝘴𝘰 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 to do it in, that means they never believed they'd lose control of those files- to anyone. They thought they'd secured themselves in absolute power, and they were only 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘺 wrong.

And that's fucking terrifying.

David V. Miller's avatar

That's because the GOP Trumptatorship's henchmen are villains. But also INCOMPETENT villains. Kinda like something out of a 1940's Tex Avery cartoon.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Everything they do makes Trump look even more guilty.

regmeyer's avatar

He does more of his share alone.

Matri's avatar

For someone who CLAIMS to be innocent, Trump sure is working SUPER hard to appear EXTRA GUILTY.

wreck's avatar

It's fascism, with morons.

The Epistler's avatar

They're corrupt liars and they're not even any good at it. That's because Trump hates smart, competent people. They make him feel inferior. He hires for maximum stupidity and bootlicking.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Turns out their insurer has better morals than THEY do! Hell of a note, eh?

Straw's avatar

A bit of a surprise, but absolutely understandable.

Sam and Jo's avatar

Does the insurance company have better morals or do they just not want to pay out. I’m going with the later, although your mileage may vary.

Straw's avatar

I understand what you write, but still, the church has not done anything to prevent the rapists from raping kids and teenagers. It was preventable.

Sam and Jo's avatar

I agree with you 100%. I’m one of those kids that was raped not once but twice. Two different churches and two different youth pastors. I have no sympathy for the church.

Straw's avatar

I hope you have healed, at least enough to have a good life. From my cousins experiences, I know that might take some time and much effort.

Merry Yule/winter solistice to you.

Maltnothops's avatar

“You know things are bad for you when an insurance company is the voice of moral reason.”

Zing! There’s a t-shirt here! Maybe even a carved granite monument.

Joan the Dork's avatar

Oh, good, I was just wondering how the RCC would one-up the Epstein files to reclaim its title as the world leader in child sexual abuse. They certainly never fail to disappoint!

Maltnothops's avatar

And with respect to the Archdiocese selling property: They are/have sold the land under a luxury hotel in NY for more than $400 million. Tax free, doncha know, because they are assumed to be a charity. It ought to be more than obvious that settling with victims of abuse is not “charity”. IANAL — but I think these sales should not be tax exempt. Which means they would need to sell more property to pay the taxes.

Sko Hayes's avatar

The Vatican is one of the richest countries in the world, maybe they could sell some of the gold and precious jewels they stole from other people.

Matri's avatar

The Vatican has literal “treasure rooms”. The pope sits on a throne of LITERAL gold embedded with thousands of gemstones!

David Graf's avatar

It makes you wonder if it would take becoming as poor as Jesus for them to recover any shred of credibility.

Matthew 19:21

It’s not really a country. It’s more like the HQ of a multinational corporation.

Sko Hayes's avatar

It literally is a sovereign country, a "city-state" established in Rome through the Lateran Treaty signed in 1929.

It acts like a multinational corporation, that's for damn sure.

OT: People in my neck O the woods are saying "Elise Navidad" this season since we get the xmas gift of getting rid of her.

Boreal's avatar

Yes, our esteemed trump anal remora congressperson, Elise Stefanik is stepping down and also ended her campaign for Governor. Both wonderful xmas gifts.

oraxx's avatar

Liability insurance does not cover an intentional tort. The insurance company is right in this case.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

I take my hat off to Travelers and Chubb, for not tolerating the CRIMES committed by the Catholic Church, as well as not falling for Timothy Dolan's bullshit. I still remember the 60 Minutes interview with Dolan, and it was instantly apparent that he was a glad-handing hotshot who thought he could schmooze his way through a situation without giving an inch in terms of Catholic dogma. In THIS case, he and the Church both get their hands slapped and they deserved it. No great surprise that Donohue loses his shit over this, either; it's what he does, and his opinions are rightly ignored.

Incidents like this are badly overdue, and it's good to see that there are organizations that will stand up to the Church and rub its perfidies in its nose.

Maltnothops's avatar

Donohue - more predictable than a clock.

larry parker's avatar

"That would make them evil."

BINGO!

NOGODZ20's avatar

When since 380 CE have they NOT been evil?

Insurance company v. the RCC.

It's like the joke about having mixed feelings watching your hated mother-in-law driving off a cliff in your brand new car.

RegularJoe's avatar

Full coverage insurance is truly a blessing in such situations. 😁

The Epistler's avatar

"What a tragic waste. She was wearing my favourite sunglasses." ~Casper, 1995 (movie wasn't fantastic but boy was Eric Idle hilarious as Dibs).

RegularJoe's avatar

Give that international pedophilia conglomerate the hell they've so dearly earned.

Len's avatar

“The archdiocese sued Chubb for deception and fraud.”

Pot, kettle.

Boreal's avatar

It's sad when I am rooting for an insurance company.

Die Anyway's avatar

That's about how I felt when I found myself agreeing with Marjorie Trailer-Queen..... about the Epstain files and the government's treatment of the abuse survivors. The world is turned upside down.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

It’s not all that topsy turvy, Majorly Traitor-Greene is still a horrible human being, and hasn’t changed her mind on any other positions she holds.

Maltnothops's avatar

I no longer remember the titles or the author but I read a five-novel fantasy series that included the invention of insurance and banking. There were dragons. There were 5-6 species of humanoids. There was a fractious empire. The hero was a young woman who single-handedly invented banking and insurance (as we understand them) to shift power to the good guys. As I worked in banking, finance and was a registered insurance agent for decades, I found the story line pretty interesting.

(Let me tell you about “insurable interest”. Oh, what a salacious idea!)

Jackie's avatar

"The Catholic Church in New York opposed legislation that would extend or create a "look-back window" for sexual abuse claims. The Church's lobbying efforts aimed to maintain existing statutes of limitations or only allow for minor extensions, not decrease the time period for claims. Troublesh00ter's avatar

You don't get to benefit from insurance for BREAKING THE LAW!

Gwen's avatar

A charitable organisation should not be engaged in political lobbying.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Here's to bankrupting the morally bankrupt RCC.

Randy Scott's avatar

Of course, they don't want to pay for what happened to those innocent children. They would have to admit what happened.

They don't want to part with their money; they want to hold on to it because of greed.

I'm all in favour of churches being taxed, and of their leaders as well.

May they be forced to pay the people they have wronged and made their lives hell.

Guerillasurgeon's avatar

"Chubb’s position is morally indefensible and legally spurious."

Don't like the Catholic Church. Not a great fan of insurance companies, necessary though they may be. Far as I'm concerned "see you both in court."

I guess it's Christmas day over there right? Merry Christmas then. Or strictly speaking happy Boxing Day. :)

NOGODZ20's avatar

Over here, Boxing Day is tomorrow. I know cuz the library will be open. :)

Guerillasurgeon's avatar

Lucky you. We get nothing out of the library until January 3 I think. Although there are Boxing Day sales – God help us, just after Black Friday, and neither of them are traditional in NZ.

larry parker's avatar

Why is there no boxing on TV on Boxing Day?

Guerillasurgeon's avatar

Because I think it refers to getting rid of the boxes your presents came in. :)

larry parker's avatar

Boxes? Ooh, fancy. : )

Gwen's avatar

It’s putting away your Christmas stuff. Lights, fake tree, wrapping paper, cheesy sweaters, etc.

Boreal's avatar

Sweet, what a great Yule gift: more problems for the pedophile cult.

Ellen MHa's avatar

ONE of the pedophile cults.

Boreal's avatar

I was referring to all christian sects.

Ellen MHa's avatar

Of course. At the moment there's the political, the celebrity, the religious, the ruling class, the... Yes. IMO, it's all or mostly about having power over someone.
