This is the church of slavery, Klansmen, lynch mobs, and bigots.

They haven't changed.

There is no horror that cannot be, and has not been, justified in the name of religion.

"I'm glad George Tiller is dead."

Christian love. Thus was it ever. And atheists are the immoral ones according to the sect built on slavery and racism.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

If Drake is so happy that George Tiller died, why isn't he miffed at his god for all the abortions Yahweh is responsible for? Consider that, according to the AMA, between 40 and 50% of all human fertilized eggs fail to implant in the uterus, and something like one in 25 pregnancies auto-abort before the end of the first trimester. This doesn't mention fetal abnormalities that can range from Rh mismatch to anencephaly, with the result being either a miscarriage or stillbirth. Worse, many such situations can threaten the mother's ability to have more children, and in severe cases, threaten her life.

Oh, but no, Drake can't be bothered with those. That's God's Will™. Uh-huh. Sure it is, Wiley.

foofaraw & Chiquita(ARF!)'s avatar

God is undoubtedly the #1 greatest abortionist of ALL time!

(Not to mention 1,000,000 global miscarriages/spontaneous abortions annually from the very air we breath, courtesy of Big Oil.)

Troublesh00ter's avatar

I basically accused Yahweh of that very crime some 30 or so years ago on Jim Maxey's Event Horizon BBS. I still have the post, too, all these years later (I'm something of a pack rat as it comes to old [and sometimes not so old] writings!).

"Sure there's a cost to increasing the growth of technology, but that's the price of growth."

We never dreamed that one major cost of such ubiquitous social media would be named "Trump".

Always speak good of the dead. He's dead. Good.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Praying to God for someone to die? He's dead. God must have listened to somebody's prayer, then.

See how that twisted thinking works out?

Obama was treasonous? I'd love to hear what his definition of treasonous is. I'm sure it's some bs about how Obama was a Satanist and a baby killer. iow - not treasonous to the US of A but to the SBC. Meanwhile our current 'President' is all about treason.

Joe King's avatar

His definition of treasonous probably had something to do with Obama having power while also having an abundance of melanin.

Len Koz's avatar

To paraphrase something I saw the other day: no matter how much or how little melanin any of us have, we're all the same color when the leopards shit us out.

It is telling that their God apparently takes decades to 'answer' a prayer for the death of a political opponent, yet is never too busy to oversee the daily reality of millions of children dying from famine and preventable disease.

If Wiley Drake’s 'prayer warriors' believe a divine hand is at work in the timing of a stroke or a heart attack, they have to reconcile that with a deity who remains silent while predators commit acts of sexual abuse across the globe with impunity. It seems their version of 'divine justice' is remarkably selective—prioritizing the silencing of a doctor or a president over the protection of the most vulnerable. To praise Drake’s legacy now isn't just whitewashing a bigot; it’s endorsing a theology that values tribal vengeance over actual human life.

Doesn't get a whole lot blunter than that.

I'm putting that in my "things to say to theists" mental file.

"Instead of being honest, Southern Baptists…"

When were Southern Baptists ever honest?

Len Koz's avatar

When they came out in support of slavery?

Whitney's avatar

Just to be clear, people like Wiley Drake are why I left the SBC and Christianity.

This is normal behavior for this group. This is who they are. The SBC is not going to condemn the man because he was exactly what they are. The SBC honestly believes Drake was in the right, and therefore sees no need to condemn his behavior; they think that outsiders 'just don't understand properly' or some similar nonsense. The racist, misogynist, bigoted behavior is completely normal and expected in their system. Don't expect it to change, either; these folks think they are the old moral majority of the Regan era.

I won't pretend I'm sad to see him gone, but I prefer not to speak ill of the dead so I'll leave it at that.

Len Koz's avatar

People like Drake are why I went from atheist to anti-theist.

Joe King's avatar

They are the "moral" "majority" from the Reagan era. They are just more open with the racism, misogyny, and anti-lgbtq hate now.

Whitney's avatar

I'd say they're part of the old moral majority, but they aren't the complete package. Regan's moral majority was always about getting power into specific hands and abusing the daylights out of it anyway.

Linda's avatar

Glad you made it out of there! I’m sure it wasn’t easy.

Boreal's avatar

Who could have imagined that a cult, formed to support and justify owning other human beings, would be mired in hate, bigotry and lies?

🤔

Lynn Veit's avatar

Yeah, I know...shocking, isn't it?

Kira Thomsen-Cheek's avatar

I will never understand the "praying for his family" and "grieving his death" stuff from these people. Don't they fervently believe that he IS ALREADY IN HEAVEN (so no need for prayers) and that he is ALREADY IN HEAVEN (so why should they grieve)???

What am I missing?

I wasn't raised with this irrational cant, and I never learned to speak Dopey Evangelical, so.... a little help?

Sorry to be offensive. I know I don't have a lot of sympathy for religious folks, and maybe I should, but GAH!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about the rest of the country, but in the deep south we have something these Christians(sic) call "righteous anger".

Basically, a means to call on hate in the name of Jesus.

Even among atheists, that's gotta be really bad optics.

Joe King's avatar

Real righteous anger is when you see injustice and the anger that the injustice triggers motivates you to do something. Their righteous anger is just cherry picking bible verses to justify their hate, so they don't feel guilty about hating.

foofaraw & Chiquita(ARF!)'s avatar

I suspect few of these folks have felt any form of guilt since the Southern Strategy "authorized" hating those with darker skin (since about 1960.)

And now TRUMP has freed them from any degree of personal responsibility for the harm they've caused, the harm they still benefit from daily, and the harm they WISH to cause, simply by changing the contents of history books and ignoring the Jesus in their own bibles. (Particularly the Sermon on the Mount, including the Golden Rule.)

With a deal like this, they basically have zero reason to even consider the kindness (and even humanist logic) of receiving any form of "salvation" from Jesus. Trump answers ALL their prayers, especially those full of hate and violence.

oraxx's avatar

Apart from the psychological effects on the believer, I do not think prayer ever affected the outcome of anything. Thus, it seems Wiley Drake made himself feel better by praying for and then celebrating the death of Dr. Tiller. As long as a significant segment of the population continues to view faith as a virtue, horrible people, acting in the name of Jesus, will continue to be a millstone around the neck of humanity. I won't celebrate Drake's passing. He simply isn't worth the effort.

Hey RWNJ Christians! That's how it works. No god brings about anyone's death. People die all the time from accidents, disease, and sometimes just because they are old. If someone dies as a direct result of your prayers, then it's because either you or someone within earshot decided to do what god can't do, and law enforcement should get involved.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

They have never bothered to notice that Yahweh answers their prayers at roughly the same rate as random chance would. Funny thing, that.

Rebecca Turner's avatar

Religious people of all faiths actively avoid critical thinking. How else can they stay faithful to their deities? That is one reason religious people dislike higher education, as many young believers lose their faiths at universities.

Tinker's avatar

People talk about the 'power of prayer' all the time and how it saved their lives. But we never hear from people who prayed and died anyway. Coincidence? I think not.

Brianna Amore's avatar

I always called them the "Southern Bigot Convention".

They are not known for their rationality.

“This man, George Tiller, was far greater in his atrocities than Adolf Hitler,” Drake said.

Enough said to know that he is the ultimate douche bag.

I'm kinda shocked to find out that Wiley Drake dissed Hitler.

Fourth morning in the new house, 3rd cup of coffee, And Al is right with the world.

And Wiley Drake is still dead.” SIng psalms, that bitch is dead, Which ol’ bitch? The wiley bitch. Sing psalms the wicked bitch is dead.”

Whoops! Wrong movie

“ It’s not distasteful to pray the word of God and include somebody’s name,” he said. “I didn’t celebrate his death. I said maybe it was God’s answer to our imprecatory prayer.”

And here it is. Religious megalomania in all of its gory glory. God does exactly what I tell him to. Look at how powerful I am. God is also so stupid, because he waits for me to tell him stuff. I’m smarter than God..

The current raft of eulogies/encomiums proves when I have always known about their moral compass. It always points to some of the worst attributes of human nature. Let us not forget that this denomination was formed because of slavery. That it maintained segregation and Jim Crow. That it produced someone like Anita bryant who decided that she could use gay people as her steppingstone to power in her church, but announced that her divorce was against everything that she believed as a Christian. But she did it anyway.

Convenience is such a harsh mistress.
