Beckwith. AGAIN. It's a point that will be made more than once here, I suspect, but if some Muslim said that Christian churches had no right to ring church bells or otherwise advertise their faith, Beckwith would have a shit-fit. THIS is one reason among many that the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment is there.

And it is clear that Micah simply does not get it.

“attacking Islam is “a political winner” for Republicans.”

There it is. All the other ignorant BS is secondary to this. In his state, he believes political authority can rely on sectarian bigotry and that alone.

Joe King's avatar

Beckwith likely thinks that "religion" = "Christianity" and anything else can be prohibited.

Stephen Brady's avatar

And the Founders had immediate experience with the persecution the Church of England visited upon other mutually incompatible Christian sects. Can you just imagine what Beckwith would visit upon The RCC, The Episcopalians, Methodists, etc? David Barton has gotten his nonsense deep into this bigot’s psyche.

Plus they had witnessed several hundred years of sectarian violence in Europe after the Protestant Reformation.

Hitch was right - religion poisons everything.

Another Christo-fascist fool who demands religious privilege for himself, while calling for faiths he disagrees with to be silenced. I doubt he is capable of getting his head around the fact his religion isn’t based on any more than the other guy’s. He stands as a classic example why no sane country hands power to the preachers.

He should try that Judeo-Christian lie on a rabbi or two. They'll laugh in his face.

Beckwith thinks the Coach Kennedy case can be used to prohibit public Islamic calls to prayer? If anything, it sets the precedent that those calls to prayer cannot be prohibited.

Hey, Beckwith...

Your own Jesus told his followers not to be hypocrites by praying/acting in public to be seen by others. He said do it in secret. You gonna try to enforce THAT? Good luck.

Joe King's avatar

But that's different! They're not praying to be SEEN by others, they're praying to be seen by OTHERS! See the difference?

We gonna stop the bells that lure children to Pastor Pervie's palaces of pedophilia as well? 🤔

Just because he has some friends, good Christian parents who raised a good Christian son, except for the pretty pervy part, you’re going all Millstone on his ass.

I thought I raised you better than that.

Christian heritage? The Declation of Independence, though not a document of governance, was authored by a Deist. The US Constitution, which is very much the law of the land, was authored by a Deist.

Also the law of the land, the Treaty With Tripoli was authored by Joel Barlow, yet another Deist. And as I always point out, that treaty (Article XI and all) was ratified unanimously without dissent before being proudly signed into law by President John Adams. He was...you guessed it...a Deist.

Deist all the way down.

How come they never say specifically which “Judeo-Christian principles [are] our heritage.”

It's the ones that say "see, we're not 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 Nazis".

Like Golden Rule = he who has the gold makes the rules, Judeo-Christian Values = Judeos and all others must follow Christian Values.

Well, it is pretty obvious it isn’t the statement in Revelation that the elect who get to go to heaven shall not have known women by lying with them…

Indiana is ranked dead last (50th) in Natural Environment, which includes pollution that is mainly due to heavy industrial toxins, coal-fired power plants and agricultural runoff. Air quality, waterways and industrial toxins all paint a ghastly picture.

Maybe Jerkwith should concentrate on REAL perils to his state.

Sarcasticfive's avatar

Ugh, as a Hoosier, Beckwith is a massive POS and just keeps showing why he's got a 16% approval rating with Republicans and *9%* approval overall.

What happens when Christians run out of other religions to suppress? If history is any indication, Christians will turn on other Christians. Yet another holy war.

(And who ever came up with the oxymoron "holy war" anyway? Nothing holy about war)

“So Beckwith doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It’s a pattern for him. Because he’s conservative Christian, he knows he can lie constantly and his Republican base will never call him out on it.”

Oh, he knows good and well what he’s talking about. That’s why he’s lying. He’s intentionally telling falsehoods to gin up hate and fear in the base so they keep voting against their best interests and keep him in power and money. I am no longer giving the GOP any benefit of the doubt in regards to motives surrounding lies. No longer considering the “don’t attribute malice when ignorance will do” razor in dealings with the repubelicans. Their actions always end up being intentional and malicious. This is no different. Anyone who has gained an elected position should know that the call to prayer is not death and destruction, and if they do not they aren’t qualified for the position.

"Our public spaces." Beckwith wants mandatory Christianity everywhere, and all other religious viewpoints hidden. He won't punish you for having them, but he will punish you if you don't bow to his god in public.

because “Judeo-Christian principles [are] our heritage

“Heritage” and “states rights” have for too long have been racist dog whistles for Christo-fascists.

I’ve both lived in a majority Muslim city neighborhood at one time and have visited (key visited) a Muslim majority country where the call to prayer happens 5 times day (as it does) and I can’t say that I was as bothered by it as this fellow seems to be. In fact, it didn’t really bother me at all.

"Our culture should hold sway because we were here first, dammit!"

"What about the native Americans?"

"Second! Our culture should hold sway because we were here second!"

"What about the French fur trappers?"

"Third! Our culture should be followed by everyone because we were third! But certainly less recent than you!"

Linda's avatar

Oh those pesky Native Americans. It’s the same story around the world thanks to the expansion of colonialism and Abrahamic religions. Speaking of here’s a recent vid of the TR library (which I worked on):

Only a bigoted asshole would think these words are a call for death and destruction:

Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest)

Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah (I bear witness that there is no god but God)

Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasoolallah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God)

Hayya ‘alas-Salah (Rush to prayer)

Hayya ‘alal-Falah (Rush to success)

Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest)

La ilaha illallah (There is no god but God)
