Mikayla Thornton says her father, a founding member of Color Me Badd, used divine authority and a “rod of correction” to make his cruelty seem righteous
I can think of very little more apropos than the Weinberg quote. This is a prima facie example of how, as Christopher Hitchens himself said, religion poisons everything.
It doesn't just sadden me. It angers me. If Hemant didn't curate the stories here, there could be at the very least three or four stories of religious abuse like this 𝘥𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘺. Not to mention several daily stories about religious bigots bigoting.
Using religion as a means to control and abuse others has been happening since the day humanity invented it.
This is a myth we have known was mythical for a very long time. It really sucks that it takes someone coming forward with their story for us to be taken seriously. Christian Fucking Privilege needs to end.
Prince, who was a role model for those seeking their sexual identities, got religion in the form of the JWs. After that, the guy who once sang "I'm not a woman. I'm not a man. I'm something you can't understand" turned on his fans for not being straight. He told them "God hates you so I have to hate you, too."
I don't care if he could play 27 instruments before he was 20. I turned him off when he let religion ruin his life.
There is no horror that cannot be, and has not been, justified in the name of religion. I know not all religious people are evil, but there are a great many evil people claiming to be Christian in an entirely self-justifying way.
After all, girls/women are just a McRib. Funny how Christianity turned actual creation: natural life-giving female vagina powers into complete submission to a singular imaginary male authority figure. What could go wrong?
My favorite part of that tale is that an omnipotent, all knowing 'god', knowing in advance that the rib clone would eat the apple, allowed it to happen so he could punish his creations and their progeny for all time, instead of picking a better plan.
This really puts a major dent in all those millions of mostly embellished testimonial stories where one's life is very bad until he/she accept Jesus Christ into their lives and then things got much better afterwords as told many times through a Christian radio program called "Unshackled," doesn't it?
One Christian Hate Cult falsely claims that empathy is sin (Me: "Since when?"). Never mind that the Bible is chock full of verses and passages strongly advocating empathy and love throughout the whole book along with everything else that provides perfect materials for R-rated or X-rated films in Hollywood.
"Do not provoke or irritate or exasperate your children [with demands that are trivial or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive; nor by favoritism or indifference; treat them tenderly with lovingkindness], so they will not lose heart and become discouraged or unmotivated [with their spirits broken)"
Cruelty right from the start. The core Christian image of God sacrificing his innocent son to satisfy a debt of guilt is a form of barbaric, horrifying cruelty. Divine sadism ;)
Just spotted this, and I have stuff I need to do, but the following will suffice as comment:
There really is NO hatred like Christian love.
“With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion.”
― Steven Weinberg, Nobel Laureate
I can think of very little more apropos than the Weinberg quote. This is a prima facie example of how, as Christopher Hitchens himself said, religion poisons everything.
Hitchens' rule that 'religion poisons everything' is as basic a law of the universe as Rick Wilson's 'Everything Trump Touches Dies.'

I was just reading, now I am laughing. Thanks.😊

Perfect reference.
Let's also not forget Christopher Hitchens "If you want to get good people to do wicked things, you need religion."
Mother and father both abusing their child in the name of a phantasm.
And yet xtians continue to insist that it is LGBTQIA+s that are unfit to be parents.

What a loving god.
😅
Further Thought:
"So when I say, as the subtitle of my book, that I think religion poisons everything... I mean to say it infects us in our most basic integrity."

"R&B band Color Me Badd"
Um, who?
I listened to WMMS in Cleveland, one of the top rock-'n'-roll stations in the US, during the 80s and 90s. Never once heard anything from them.
Just as well. 😝

"Let me take off all your clothes..."
And you know the rest of their famous dirty song made up to gross you out to the core if you don't like what the lyrics says.
To Mikayla's father...

Sadly, the supposed "savior" of the NT is just as bad. "If you don't love me, I'll burn you forever!"
Swell. 🤢🤮

But he loves us………..
