Attempting to sort out who was, or was not, a TRUE Christian has spilled enough blood to float the Navy. This is why the founders gave religion no role to play in their new government.
Our Constitution specifically bans religious tests for holding public office in the United States. That's about as far from being founded as a Christian nation as it gets. As usually happens, she makes a better case for atheism than Christianity. The real question is, why do they have invocations at all? It isn't as if a reasonable case could be made for those prayers ever having made better people out of the members of Congress.
Remember when there were hit pieces about Kamala stressing her staffers out because she read things and expected the staffers to read them too? Been thinking a lot about that lately.
As though doing the fucking homework were a 𝘣𝘢𝘥 thing. SMDH...
If I didn't live in it, and if nearly everyone I cared about didn't also live in it, I'd be tempted to say this fucking country 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴 do go down in flames.
The fact that she got the religion wrong and then reposted the same insult with a different religion swapped in pretty much tells you everything you need to know about religion.
True enough, but at some point or other, she's going to be put in a situation which demonstrates just how WRONG she is. She had better be up on her compartmentalization skills, because the cognitive dissonance is going to be EPIC!
I once had a coworker who refused to learn anything about any religion other than her exact sect of Christianity, for fear that she might come to question her faith.
I told her that, if her belief was so tenuous that learning even a tiny bit about anything else was that threatening, that wasn't faith, that was habit.
She didn't speak to me for a few weeks. Since she didn't know that there's a state called Washington, and therefore thought Seattle was a suburb of DC, believed that Pawn Stars was a documentary and not a "reality" TV show, and thought Henry VIII was married to Marie Antoinette, I appreciated the preservation of brain cells.
"the House Chaplain clarified that House rules “require a religious prayer.” "
Because without the help of christian prayers Satan will take over the House and before you realize it, the House will produce laws to provide meals for school children, housing for the homeless, universal health care, taxing billionaires, stopping school shootings, making it impossible for traitors to be reelected as president, in other words, this will result in christian persecution.
I wanted to check, just to be certain, and sure enough, there's an (R) next to Rep. Mary Miller's name. Surprise, surprise, eh? No, not really. And of course, then Dale Partridge has to throw his $0.02 in, demonstrating his utter lack of understanding or empathy or a willingness to recognize the melting pot that is American society. And let's remember, too: FFRF Co-President Dan Barker has requested time to offer his own secular invocation in the House of Representatives, and been turned down EVERY LAST TIME.
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”
Illinois, is this the person you really want representing you? I get that maybe a decent number of you are fine with the bigotry and hate, disgusting as that is, but the abject ignorance?! Really?! Is this truly what Illinois residents are? Rep. Miller is there not only to protect your state’s interests in the federal government, but she represents your state’s identity. Are you all Hitler loving, morons? Cause that is what you are telling the world with this choice for representative.
There are so many Americans who are provincial in their knowledge and beliefs. Without travel or curiosity many fear stepping outside of their little daily routine to look around and see others who are a bit different. After 9/11 there was so much fear and hatred and people were just in shock. I was working in San Francisco at the time. After work one day I was in line waiting for the bus to go home. A Sikh walked by and one lady started going into hysterics about the Arab terrorist (seriously) who just walked by us. I almost slapped her. But instead I told her he wasn't Arab but a Sikh and explained about the religion and the wrap for the uncut hair, how the facial features were not even similar, about India, etc. Her response was how do you know these things? I explained about friends from India for many years, asking questions, knowing a few Sikhs because of a neighborhood convenience store owned by some Hindus from India who had many Sikh friends and introduced me etc etc. I really urged her to keep an open mind and try to learn about other cultures without judgement. Don't know if it worked, but at least I calmed her down for the moment.
And as an extra comment, do not Americans understand that all the people from other lands and cultures have added so much to our culture? Celebrate differences, include others cultures. Life is a celebration and so much more colorful with all the world coming together.
When I was in the Air Force, I was stationed at an American base in Germany. There were service men and their families who never left base. Not everyone of course. Most of us took advantage of the chance to travel and experience Europe. But there were those who were timid or insular or something. I didn't understand it and kind of felt sorry for them for missing out.
There's a German restaurant adjacent to a military base I know of, and have been to more than a few times because the food is amazing, which likely only thrived the way it did because of the number of US personnel who'd been stationed in or transferred through Ramstein at some point during their service (the base in question is an Air Transport Command hub in the Northeast). Even civvies like me benefit from the experiences of those in the service who chose to explore a little while they were out of country!
US citizens are provincial in their thinking & knowledge because they have been intentionally conditioned to be that way through the US form of capitalism and commercial media. It's how control and profits are maintained.
Even many who have tertiary educations have narrow mindsets because their "education" is framed within narrow self serving system.
Critical thinking and challenging the status quo is akin to being unpatriotic if not a traitor.
Yes the genesis of the internet and social media has had some degree of broadening peoples mindsets. But the flip side is that it has also reinforced nationalism and social and racial division.
Aggree that people should get around more to broaden their horizons, however when you live on below award wages, pay high rent, in a debt cycle even for necessities, not to mention being conscious of the cost of health care child care and aged care. Such notions are quite bourgeoisie.
American voters are to blame for giving a bully pulpit to illiterate, idiotic and venal politicians. It seems to be more prevalent in the Republican Party.
And if you're absolutely immovable on the (totally bogus) necessity of it being a religious invocation, might I suggest the wonderfully concise 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘥'𝘴 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳?
I am all for sciences experiments, they can demonstrate it when they want. They can even prove their faith by doing it with a boulder tied to their neck.
"Hi, I'm a Christian supremacist and also an uneducated, intolerant moron who probably thinks her own shadow is Satanic persecution. I know, what a crazy combination."
"...the only people who claim otherwise are David Barton-esque liars who spend their careers lying to other Christians and telling them whatever they want to hear..."
As usual, a Christian manages to demonstrate the fact that they don't really believe in religious freedom.
Like a great many Christians, she believes in Christian privilege.
And even then, just for the Christians of her particular sect. You know...the REAL Christians (TM)
Attempting to sort out who was, or was not, a TRUE Christian has spilled enough blood to float the Navy. This is why the founders gave religion no role to play in their new government.
Business as usual.
Me, not thee.
Freedom for me but not for thee.
Too many words. : )
Yes, worshiping a god full of hatred dmnation and persecution

"What, you expect me to have actually read the Constitution before taking this job? LOL, you're cute."
It's up there with expecting Donnie Dumb-Ass to remember that he swore to: "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
Phenomenal.
Remember when there were hit pieces about Kamala stressing her staffers out because she read things and expected the staffers to read them too? Been thinking a lot about that lately.
Reading bills is part of the job description. If they can't be bothered, they should apply at McDonald's.
As if their food wasn't bad enough. It takes skills to make edible fries and patties. Exhibit one, my paternal grandmother.
Where they can refuse service to Sikhs and Hindus.

He will preserve and protect the parts he likes and issue executive orders to repeal the parts he doesn't like.
Not executive orders, royal decrees.
You misspelled Imperial decrees.
Worse, their constituents expect for them to read a bill before voting on it.
Oh, the horrors!
I'd be happy if they read the highlights compiled by their staff before voting.
Their god doesn't, so why would they ?
The fact that she got the religion wrong and then reposted the same insult with a different religion swapped in pretty much tells you everything you need to know about religion.
And complete ignorance 😔
And a determined attitude NOT TO LEARN.
When your religion tells you that you’re right about absolutely everything, incentive to learn goes out the window.
True enough, but at some point or other, she's going to be put in a situation which demonstrates just how WRONG she is. She had better be up on her compartmentalization skills, because the cognitive dissonance is going to be EPIC!
Good luck, her attitude demonstrates that she is right even when proved wrong.
I once had a coworker who refused to learn anything about any religion other than her exact sect of Christianity, for fear that she might come to question her faith.
I told her that, if her belief was so tenuous that learning even a tiny bit about anything else was that threatening, that wasn't faith, that was habit.

In a word ... WHEW!
People think that, because there's a computer - worse, now one with AI - in their hand, they don't need to know anything anymore. It's terrifying.
And more than enough about her.
Bigots gonna bigot, and NSGOP Rep needs a lesson in the First Amendment. Must be a day ending in y.

Or worse.

Which makes me ask: What are they afraid of?
Keep poking holes in religious belief and the whole thing falls to pieces.
Christians and all other religions have built their houses on sand.
Indeed they have, and even their hotshot J guy told them what happens when a house is built on a poor foundation.
Real estate developers in Miami sure should've read 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 bit a little more carefully.
No, no. They got paid so…not their problem.
Holy spirits.
Hmph. Whatever spirits Miller has been indulging in, I doubt they're much "holy!" 😝
Stupid bigots say stupidly bigoted shit.....go figure.

I have not read that book. Keep meaning to.

I hate Illinois Nazis!

Poor Hemant, saddled with this troglodyte.
Hemant has full employment from them and their nonsense, which will never end.
Sad, innit?

Non-voters are the most responsible.
So tired of the stupidity and hate in this country. It's fucking exhausting.
If you're going to have invocations at all, they should be 4 words long: "Let's get to work." No elaboration is necessary.
And if you're absolutely immovable on the (totally bogus) necessity of it being a religious invocation, might I suggest the wonderfully concise 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘥'𝘴 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳?

With some of them you'd have more luck asking them to walk on water than asking them to think.
