Conservative Christians see their religion as the solution to all the world’s problems while conveniently ignoring the countless horrors perpetrated in the name of their religion. There are Christians, and then there are Christians. They are not the same. The most Christian parts of the United States, a deeply Christian nation— the deep southern states— are generally speaking the worst often just about every measure of social well-being.
Yea but I think that’s more of a testament of how America tends to fuck things up than any exceptional evilness of Christianity. American model of separation (as opposed to European where they get subsidized and go about their day) is effectively making spiritual movements writ large compete using the worst aspects of commercial competition. That is conducive to the lowest common denominator and predatory behaviors coming out on top in modern USA. But believe me that the most backward, serpent-handling, tongue-shrieking book burning county in Arkansas is much safer and has an incomparably higher standards of living than absolute majority of the rest of the world. For one, they don’t murder people for “apostasy” and “blasphemy” which is a daily reality in much of Muslim world - that’s well over a billion people.

The "most backward...county in Arkansas is much safer" for who, exactly? Straight white Christians? Yes. The LGBTQAI+ community? Blacks? People who aren't Christian? People who rely on gov't programs? Not so much, and it's not safer for people on public assistance because people in red states who need gov't programs get screwed over something fierce, especially in poor counties where it's hard to access healthcare (not that they can afford it anyway).
I’m not sure how much of the rest of the world you have seen, but the standards of living that even the poorest in the US, notwithstanding the tribal and identitarian divisions, are VASTLY HIGHER then much of the rest of the world. That also extends to legal protections. Since conversation is about “non-Christian” countries which today means for the most part Muslim world, India/SA and SEA with a lot of overlap, even in the most backward US place an LGBTQ person will be much safer then in places like Pakistan, SA etc. Because of functioning institutions - a luxury for many on the outside - there’s no chance that a mob ran by a rogue preacher will mow down someone they disapprove of and generally get away with it. Meanwhile in many places just looking sideways will get you beat up or straight up murdered.
I’m not saying that things are perfect or even just great here, but it’s an incredibly privileged and entitled view to pretend that US has it worse than others . We really don’t, and I highly recommend living a couple years in a poor or even just “mid” country to start appreciating what we do have.

I couldn’t tell you what religion (if any) my MP is, because with a few exceptions, it’s just not a big deal here. The same person has been my MP for the 15 years I’ve lived in this house, I’ve been on her email list, had personal contact via email, letter, and phone with her (in both directions), but I haven’t a clue if she even HAS any religious beliefs, never mind what they are, because that has NO BEARING on the excellent job she does (she’s a government minister, btw, and has headed cross-party committees in the past).

We at the Center for Freethought Equality PAC are actively working to get these candidates elected - we were the first PAC to donate to Rabb and other humanist candidates who came close to winning like Francesca Hong. Money talks, so we want to see more of these candidates in office, we need to open our wallets.
I will support, vote for, and/or donate to any progressive candidate that is or seems authentic in their values and policy no matter what faith or no faith. Free thought is a beautiful thing we should really rally behind much more often.
Absolutely! And we also support candidates who may be religious but are strong on the separation of church and state - like the religious allies in the Congressional Freethought Caucus and many others. You can fight for freethought no matter what you believe.
AND, if we want to change the fact that the nonreligious are 30% of America but less than 1% of Congress - if we believe we deserve to be represented at parity just like every other group in America should be - we need to invest in our community specifically.

I voted for Hong. Ready to elect Crowley. I’m not ready to go back to the Republican mess Wisconsin was before Evers. We already have enough problems, but adding a Republican governor will not help, most of the issues are leftover from Walker shitting on everything. Maybe, if enough farmers lose their farms over Trump’s tariff disasters, the rural voters will wake up to the crap storm they keep voting for. State governors (local officials) have a much more direct and immediate impact on daily life than members of Congress. If only people could start to understand that.

I agree with you that "*just* because someone is atheist" is not sufficient reason to support them for office. We screen all candidates we endorse - not for partisanship, but they have to be willing to defend science, civil liberties, and church-state separation. Hong was aligned with us on all the important issues.
I didn't agree with Hong on everything, but she went from being an unknown state representative to outpolling several statewide elected officials and losing an expensive gubernatorial primary by less than half a percentage point - while running openly as a humanist. Definitionally, that is not a "terrible candidate." I'm not saying you're wrong for preferring a different candidate! Just that she has an evident political talent. I bet she will run for Congress when Pocan retires (and would be a good fit in that safe Dem seat).
Just like Emily's List and the LGBT Victory Fund, our end goal is to reduce the barriers to running for office as an open atheist/agnostic/humanist. Right now many folks are scared they cannot run for office while being open about their religious beliefs. The way to solve that is to have political vehicles that proudly and loudly support those who do run, without imposing a million conditions or only supporting the "perfect" ones.

I don’t agree with it necessarily, but perhaps WE SHOULD reconsider what the hell we are celebrating a little bit and make some adjustments to the folklore? I dunno. Americans have a tough time accepting truth or history. It’s probably why we don’t make much progress forward. Lasting progress.
Someone who is trans is running for the state legislature a couple of districts over from mine. I don’t know her religious identification. She is campaigning on kitchen table issues and the general uselessness of the incumbents (it’s a 3 seat district). Is she “openly” trans? I have no idea. She is who she is and that’s that. Her campaign isn’t about being trans or equality; it’s about how the people in that district deserve better than what they have been getting. I think her odds are slim but mostly because it’s a red part of the county.
