I live in Oklahoma and this is the first I’m hearing of this, so Thank you. Also, might want to correct that Drummond is no longer running. He was defeated by Mazzei in the runoff in August. Thanks again for the update!

Of course, upholding the Establishment Clause is a perceived violation of the Free Exercise Clause. They are so desperate to have the Establishment Clause stripped down to the point that Congress is only prohibited from declaring one individual sect of conservative Protestant Christianity to be the official Church of the United States. I am only slightly surprised that it's a Reagan appointee and not one Mango Mussolini installed.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

I think Judge Russell mistook the "Free Exercise" clause for FREE MONEY for religious schools. Someone needs to tell him, that's not how this works.

The Christian Nazionalists goal is to force ALL public schools to be religious indoctrination machines. They only want students learning what they want, regardless of the facts.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

How many times have I said it? What part of: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..." doesn't Judge Russell get? That means no Christian schools, no Islamic schools, and NO JEWISH SCHOOLS may be funded with public monies. Yet somehow he figures that the state is discriminating against Jewish charter schools because Oklahoma has "charter schools of disparate philosophical or educational persuasions," which supposedly opens the door to religious charter schools.

Ummm ... flawed reasoning, anyone?

They like the Free Exercise Clause and hate the Establishment Clause.

Flawed and manipulative. As a person of Jewish heritage I find it abhorrent that this appears to be another flawed Orwellian strategy.

Joe King's avatar

They used the Jewish charter school to try and deflect from their desire to establish a Christian theocracy. "Judeo-Christian" has become a buzzword to them as shorthand for "see, we're not 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 Nazis".

Just wait until a Muslim religious school obtains tax payer funds. That eventuality will put an end to this effort.

Die Anyway's avatar

I wonder. Maybe Christians will be ok with Muslims getting some public money as long as Christians get a bigger cut.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

I'd be dubious. Right-wing Christians, by and large, are pretty intolerant of Islam. Indeed, they're not much for any other religion other than their own specific branch of Christianity.

Sinanju06's avatar

No, no, no. Just wait until the Satanic Temple gets involved. Then the effort will REALLY cease.

NOGODZ20's avatar

It's already happened via state school voucher and scholarship programs (see the Hifz Academy and Bayaan Academy, both in Tampa, FL. Combined, they've pulled in $18 million dollars over 10 years)

A Republican in Oklahoma who remembered what the Establishment Clause means. It's either impressive or the guy is an antisemite.

Forget about the religion side of this for a second. Any organization that does not participate in funding schools should not participate in getting funding for schools.

Tax the churches!

oraxx's avatar

Organized religion, all across the board, is desperate to get government to backstop their religion because they know full-well they're losing the long game. I'm cautiously hopeful forcing religion into the public schools isn't going to have the outcome they're hoping for. Kids simply have access to a lot of information, and there's a good chance they're going to resent having religion forced on them.

Jews already have Jewish Day School, Yeshiva, Hebrew School (Religious/Sunday School), Cheder and Mesivta. God in Heaven, isn't that more than enough? Do they really need to put their hands on taxpayer dollars?

The state of Oklahoma is also funding the school's football team. After all, you know why Jews like to play football?

They like to get the quarterback.

Jesus Christ, it shouldn't be this complex: my money should not go to support any religion unless I willingly consent to give it to them personally. Public schools should not be indoctrinating children with a specific religious viewpoint. What happened to "parent's rights for religious instruction"?

Jeff van Weereld's avatar

Why can’t AIPAC pay for that school? They seem to have plenty of money for other illustrious causes.

REXVEXED's avatar

Thanks for the article. I thought that this was done already in the OC area. But after a closer look, not to this extent. Just use of a Christian based educational material.

I’m going to run this idea up the flag pole and see who salutes.

What would happen if we formed our own charter schools and forced the state to subsidize them?

I’m talking about progressive schools which teach REAL science (and not creationist psychobabble); philosophy; ethics; critical thinking; REAL history (and not sanitized, “white” US history) including the history of labor movements, women’s history, LGBT history, and the history of people of color in this country; which required students to learn two foreign languages fluently; proficiency on a musical instrument or in art; theater; and essential life skills, such as cooking, maintaining a house, personal finance, sex education (including frank discussions of sex, contraception, abortion, homo-, bi- and transsexuality).

I think it’s time we started using red states’ tactics right back on them — and making them pay for the privilege of us using their tactics right back on them.

WCNs will be thrilled at the possibility to getting money from the state to indoctrinate their kids. It just amazes me as a believer how expletive deleted up we are in our minds. There were and are good reasons to maintain the separation of church and state but we just take the money and run.
