Once people become convinced they’re operating under divine sanction, they’re capable of rationalizing an excuse for absolutely anything. Right wing politics and conservative religion are a symbiotic relationship that has dealt the human race nothing but misery. I’m sick to death of performative prayer. Apart from the psychological effects on the believer, prayer never affected the outcome of anything.
“Neither federal nor state constitutions allow the legislature to punish its mayor for showing up and listening to whatever political or religious views are being discussed in our community, whether the mayor agrees with those views or not. That is the mayor’s job,"
The mayor is the government, and therefore the mayor’s speech and actions aren’t protected by the first amendment, they are, in fact, limited by the first amendment. Get this through your thick skulls. The constitution is written to limit what the people in the government can do and provides protection for the people they govern. She was at the rally in her role as mayor, her speech is the government’s speech and therefore is inherently restricted by the constitution. If she were there as realtor, or private citizen, then she is free to say whatever she likes without government interference. But still, what she says will still be subject to other people not being appreciative of it and hold it against her as a candidate for election.
And, as she is claiming she was doing her job, the constitution certainly does allow for the people holding her accountable for poor performance, even if it is religious based bad behavior. She failed as mayor, got reprimanded for it, and is now upset she can’t keep being mayor.
Umm, how, exactly, is calling out an elected official for violating the First Amendment an attack on the First Amendment? And I am pretty sure the only reason she called it an attempt to interfere with the election was 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 she lost, taking a page from her lord and savior's playbook.
𝑆ℎ𝑒’𝑠 𝑢𝑝𝑠𝑒𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠. And she refuses to accept them.
Her ignorance of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment is simply staggering. She'll need to have her nose rubbed in this one until she gets the message.
That will take a very long time. She will just run to the people who will reaffirm her (probable) view that the Establishment Clause means that Congress is only prohibited from declaring one specific sect the official Church of the United States.
The question becomes: will any fines levied in this matter be borne by HER or the city? I suspect you already know my preference. Public government officials need to take personal responsibility for public actions!
Ask them if that also means that Congress could declare Hinduism the official religion as long as they don't declare on particular sect as the official Temple. I bet they would either understand the Establishment Clause then or double down on the "but we're Christian nation" special pleading nonsense.
I'm not even certain I can begin to count all the ways this is wrong. Right off the top, the event should never have been allowed to happen. Public prayer with government support positively SCREAMS violation of State / Church separation. Mayor Woodward damned well should have known better than to bring apparent government approval to the event by her presence. Sean Feucht has been trouble since he first appeared on the pages of the Friendly Atheist, and Woodward and/or her subordinates should have vetted him LONG before the event happened. I could go on and on.
This was no-doubt-about-it governmental endorsement of ONE SPECIFIC RELIGION ... and it was wrong-Wrong-WRONG.
Sean Feucht was trouble long before he appeared on these pages. There are so many of them, and not enough time to report on all of them. Hemant does need to sleep occasionally...
When I was a kid, I prayed to god for a bike. Then I was told that god doesn’t work that way. So I stole a bike and then asked god to forgive me. All good!
If she gets $10 million, I’m going to emulate her. I’ll run for office and be grossly inappropriate until someone criticizes me and then I’ll sue them for criticizing me.
I suspect if this $10 million lawsuit gets brought it will get thrown out. Chump's lawyers are good enough for that. And they're used to not getting paid by their client.
The only thing they assert she did was "actions that associated her with..." That's it. Everything else is on her. And it's noticeable that she isn't suing them for libel.
You want the almighty dollah, Nadine? Then pray for it like you're supposed to. Isn't that what your savior told you to do when you needed something? Get together with others and pray for it in Jesus' name and his pops will come through? Why so little faith?
“All day yesterday not one fire victim or first responder asked me about my political views. But they did ask us to pray for them.”
I call BS. I bet you dollars to donuts that the fire victims and first responders told her exactly what they needed to stop the fires and/or recover, which isn’t her political views but is political and her fucking job. While it is possible that a little comforting prayer was included in their requests, it most certainly was not a request to spend a large amount of time away from doing the work to help them and publicly express her own inability to govern by asking an imaginary god to do it for her.
Helpful hints for politicians seeking to avoid criticism for associating with white nationalists: Don't associate with white nationalists. But, if you do, blame those who exposed your behavior. This lawsuit will go nowhere.
Shea's response to that bit of his "Rules?" YOU'RE TAKING IT OUT OF CONTEXT!!!" Oh no, Matty. We got your message loud and clear, you fucking xtian wacko.
Well, I believe when fighting against malaria outbreaks, one strategy we pursue is to sterilize all the male mosquitos and release them back into the population. That's kinda close.
Bush, George W; Cheney, Richard; Nixon, Richard Milhouse; Reagan, Ronald; Graham, Lindsay; Cruz, Rafael Edward; Johnson, Michael; McConnell, Addison Mitchell (...yep, his first name is Addison. *𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘧'𝘴 𝘬𝘪𝘴𝘴* Perfection. Anecdote: My local train terminates at the UK mainland ferry port to Ireland, so often has Irish passengers en route there. One time I was on board and sat opposite an Irish woman with a child she kept reprimanding. She got chatting to Irish man across the aisle. He said he was going home to bury his brother and she replied she was going home to her sister's funeral. 'Ah,' she said, 'God always takes the good ones early.' To which, almost without drawing breath, her child replied, 'I'm glad I'm one of the bad ones then.' I wanted to give him a cheer and say I was firmly on his side!
"All three women received prayers on stage from Feucht and former state lawmaker Matt Shea."
What those three women...indeed, ANYONE at that super-spreader event...should have received was a dose of COVID. Then they'd be left to wonder why their god didn't protect them. Or maybe even wonder if it wasn't their god's will that they become infected.
"I did something I should have known was stupid and would ruin any reputation I might have and now I want 10 million dollars from the city."
LMFAO
The ones who make the claims of “divine sanction” don’t bug me nearly as much as the ones who enable and excuse that nonsense.

"showing up and listening"
That's not what she did. She actively participated in the klan rally.
Indeed. Woodward wasn't a bystander. She was an ACTIVE PARTICIPANT in a totally inappropriate public event.
She FAed and now she'll FO.

This is it. I’ve directly heard it through the mouths of fundamentalist family members.

💯
Is she in training for the Self-Butt Kicking Championship in my state? She's certainly in contention for it.
Anyone who knowingly files a frivolous lawsuit should not simply be slapped down but fined for the attempt.
Well, Spokane is more west Idaho than eastern Washington.
Yep yep. Jesusland, through and through.
It is difficult to decipher where Coeur d’Alene ends and Spokane begins and Coeur d’Alene is a right wing hotbed of lunatics with a pretty lake.
ETA, I forgot to mention the military base on the other side of the city, so religious fanaticism is surrounding the city for sure.
Dishonesty, bigotry, lying for jesus, blaming everyone else for the consequences of your own poor chocies: all traits of xtian scumbags.

Not blaming Hemant at all. Just saying that Woodward should have been way more pro-active.
She knew exactly who she was getting on stage with, and she knew exactly what she was doing- she just didn't think she'd get in trouble for it.
Well, surprise-surprise! 😝
Haven't you heard? They're not perfect, just FORGIVEN! And they figure that let's them off the hook! 😝

You'll lose (in a sane world*) but your lawyer will still want to get paid.
*Does anyone have a spare one laying around?
Just grab one of the lawyers Drumpf hasn't paid yet.
And use them for 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵? Watering the plants? I'm not even sure I'd trust a Chump lawyer to get 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 right.
I suspect if this $10 million lawsuit gets brought it will get thrown out. Chump's lawyers are good enough for that. And they're used to not getting paid by their client.
Not a bad idea. But have you seen how long that line is?
"they just filed an amended claim demanding $10 million from the city because those council members supposedly destroyed her reputation"
No, Karen. You destroyed your reputation. The council just pointed out what an asshole you are.
She needs to take in multiple viewings of the original version of "I Just Fucking Shot Myself! -The Musical."
The only thing they assert she did was "actions that associated her with..." That's it. Everything else is on her. And it's noticeable that she isn't suing them for libel.

I want to know under what non-critical circumstance "kill all males" would EVER be appropriate? Even in wartime, THAT would be a war CRIME!
Shea is reading from Hegseth's playbook.
I thought that was straight out of YHVH's playbook, though Matty forgot to put in the part where you keep all the virgin girls as sex slaves.
Yup, he... "forgot." The drool stains on that particular passage in his bible may never be explained...
Does drool make the pages stick together? I thought that was a different bodily fluid.
Using one's penis as a bookmark is bound to result in...stainage.
