How long before we see Burgen's name linked to yet another story about a pastor being arrested for sex crimes involving children?

Joe King's avatar

Depends on how quickly his IT team scrubs his computers and whether or not his victims gain some courage.

Mark Carpenter's avatar

Look at the lieutenant governor of my state (Indiana), who is also pastor of an Assembly of God church and is being implicated with the son of his fellow pastor taking videos of his parents having sex, and who has made videos of the SA of young children.

Bible College Beckwith is a hardcore Christian Nationalist.

Holytape's avatar

Look, I think it is unfair to Burgen that we jump immediately to calling him a pedophile. That is just our bigotry against Christians pigeon-holing him into our preconceived notions. He might not be into children. He could be into farm animals or dead people. Or even dead farm animals.

Zorginipsoundsor's avatar

Mrs. Burgen probably wonders why the prime rib tastes funny.

RegularJoe's avatar

Dead young farm animals.

Deceased immature caprids, for example.

John Smith's avatar

That gives new meaning to the phrase “beating a dead horse, sheep, goat”!

It would not surprise me …

It might be a relatively safe to bet an offer to “hold my breath” waiting for it as it should not be long.

It'll be a day ending in Y, that's for sure.

Until Burgen is willing to call out the cartels and foreign mobsters who prey on the kids and transport them all over the country, and other places, I don't take him seriously. I'm all for no parole at all for human traffickers. He should also call out the wealthy degenerates who also use kids for the same purposes. No free passes for the above groups! This is just for openers. Let's include the politicians who indulge also. I think I'll ask Burgen these questions directly soon.

oraxx's avatar

I can dismiss people like Jim Burgen out of hand because I'm a reasonably rational human being who likes fact-based decision making. There is clearly nothing fact-based about what he has to say, and naturally he justifies it all by claiming Jesus feels the same way about things as he does. What truly horrifies me however, are the fools who willingly delegate their thinking to a man like him. Just about every problem on earth traces back to two root causes. Religion and the profit motive, and there is a high degree of overlap between the two.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Precisely. WHO is listening to this guy, and how much of their own judgment have they given over to him? I suspect the answer is none too comforting, indeed, not comforting in the slightest.

SeekingReason's avatar

The sycophants keep it all supported. But even 30 years ago when I told people I was an atheist and talked about the impossibility of things in the bible, people would whisper to me, I don’t really believe either! We do have a high number of sick brained people in this country and religion is behind almost all of it. We need to make sure the apologists are flushed out of our legislature and never allow anyone espousing religious BS to sit on the Supreme Court. That should be an instant disqualification! They MUST be grounded in reality!

Thomas Pearce's avatar

Even those who don’t believe will go along out of societal pressure to not stand out and become targets themselves. Herd behavior. Might not want to go where the flock leaders take you but resistance makes you stand out.

David V. Miller's avatar

WHO listens to him? Churchlings, Trumplings & MAGAsses, of course.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

Sad to say, but very damned true.

SeekingReason's avatar

Oraxx- there is an extremely high correlation of religion to the root of all rot! The guilt, the lack of evidence, the demand for money, the abysmal dictatorship. Most children see through this by 13. But the deeply indoctrinated are mostly psychopaths of one sort or another.

Elise's avatar

The money flows up; the control and fake promises flow down.

oraxx's avatar

My father went to his grave beliving you simply could not question anything the Catholic Church taught. He never made it past high school and never read a book in his life.

SeekingReason's avatar

That was typical of earlier generations…never question “authority”. It wasn’t wise advice.

David V. Miller's avatar

Unfortunately, churchlings, Trumplings & MAGAsses are not particularly reasonable, ain't they?

Old Man Shadow's avatar

"I say you’re a traitor to your first allegiance, Jesus"

Jesus tells me you're acting like a bigoted asshole, Jim.

Jesus also tells me that if you want to warn kids about child predators, you have to discuss age-appropriate sex education with them, so they can recognize abuse and know what to do if it happens.

And he thinks megachurches are a systemic failure of white Evangelicalism in America promoting profits, power, and success over helping the needy.

Boreal's avatar

Someone should tell Jim that the calls are coming from inside the house.

Claudia's avatar

Absolutely, your points about teaching children the concept of consent!

Brianna Amore's avatar

Also Jesus promoted compassion rather than condemnation for the marginalized. This is something modern-day Christians such as this pastor seem to forget.

oraxx's avatar

At the end of the day, it's all about power with people like this.

NOGODZ20's avatar

To the flathead who delivered the sermon to Flatirons...

Why the hangup over LGBTQs? What possible effect can they have on your life or the lives any other hateful lying bigots like you? What are you all so very afraid of?

Bet I know the answer.

oraxx's avatar

Over compensating closet case?

wreck's avatar

Another one who has an unhealthy obsession with other peoples genitals.

SeekingReason's avatar

Always obsessed with sexual anything!

Joe King's avatar

A defining characteristic of conservative Christianity.

RegularJoe's avatar

Burgen is in serious need of a shovel-face interaction session.

I recommend a D-handled scoop shovel.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

I have a steel coal shovel I use to break up ice in my driveway. Will that do? 😁

RegularJoe's avatar

If it works for you, go for it. 😁

I like the portability of a scoop shovel, and the D-handle gives lots of options for grip. Throw on a high-vis vest and look like sanitation crew.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

D-handle on mine as well. Ages ago, I had a cast iron coal shovel, but it rusted and I wore it out!

Mark Carpenter's avatar

I'll let you borrow my snow shovel. Besides, it's 70 degrees in Indy, today.

RegularJoe's avatar

It's about 40°F (4°C, 278 K) here in Marion (Iowa) at the moment. Most of the snow we had is gone.

SeekingReason's avatar

Sick psychopathic minds, think alike. And this pastor who forgets that the Catholic church alone has made almost 4 billion in restitution. Restitution for…molestation & rape. How does a person become a traitor to a figment of the imagination? 😂

It is time to dismantle these welfare-queen churches and tax them out of existence. And then he should be personally charged with hate crimes and put in prison or a psych ward.

In other words, go on record as being a bigot or we're kicking you out of the club. Sound like a win to me! Being kicked out of the bigot club because you aren't a bigot is the first step toward recovering from religion.

Boreal's avatar

and idiots like him can't understand why their churches are closing left and right. Younger people aren't into the hate, fire and brimstone nuttery.

oraxx's avatar

The downside being, the churches are being distilled down to the true believers who reside beyond the reach of facts and reason.

Claudia's avatar

Also, re the point about protecting kids, aren’t there a few more measures which could be enacted which would help children? Such as food stamps, increased availability of affordable housing, improved medical care and … let’s not forget gun restrictions. Remind me, please, how many children were killed via guns in the USA?

But no, they’d much rather hone in on the incredibly low low number of trans children who might want to play a sport.

Christ himself would be close to a paracetamol overdose, given the headaches he’d be having on account of his followers’ actions!!

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

Exactly! Providing parents with the means to raise their children comfortably, without requiring both parents to hold down multiple jobs just to make ends meet, will enable parents to be involved in their children’s lives, teach them about consent and bodily autonomy, allow children to feel comfortable with talking to the parents when something does happen, will keep the children from becoming targets of predators in the first place. The one thing a predator looks for in a target is if there is a strong parental relationship. A lot of folks confuse strong parents with being physically fit and strong, but what it is really is that the parents are involved in a nurturing manner so that they know what is happening with their kids. (That’s not to say the parents are at fault when something happens, just that their involvement helps avoid issues or helps to discover the issues sooner. The perpetrators are always at fault.) If we start working to build up our communities, provide social safety nets, set and maintain minimum standards of living, we as a society can protect children from the real predators out there. Then we won’t be worried that children are LGBTQ.

oraxx's avatar

I couldn't wait to escape the club.

Boreal's avatar

"And the largest, fastest growing industry in the world is the sexual exploitation and sale of children, which is a spiritual issue, not a political issue."

Overwhelmingly committed by christian conservatives, NOT LGBTQ people.

Every accusation, a confession.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

Will this church denounce Trump? They can do it this Sunday. He is more than implicated, the cover up makes it even more obvious that he’s was more than just one of the Epstein customers, that he was involved in the trafficking process if not the actual boss(though I still contend that he was the boss and Epstein the patsy).

Protect children my ass. Sports haven’t become unfair for girls because a few transgender girls have participated. They aren’t less safe because occasionally a transgender girl might be in the locker room any more than if a lesbian shares a locker room. But the only way to police these situations is for adults to sexually abuse the girls through genital inspection to ensure the other athletes are the correct gender. That is unacceptable. That is the thing we should be protecting our children from.

Irreversible transgender surgeries are not performed on children, though there are irreversible surgeries surgeries performed on cis children, often boys getting mastectomies or girls getting breast enhancements and do not get me started on the male genital mutilation they excuse for religious purposes.

The very fact that they get to offer up these ridiculous proposals proves they aren’t being denied political speech and presence in our governance. All of this is Christian supremacy and influence on our government. We don’t need these protections, we don’t need their investigations and inspections. If we are going to prosecute and punish child traffickers, then let’s do it and let’s start with the sherbet pervert occupying the White House, and all his billionaire friends that are the monsters we fear, rather than focusing our attention on vulnerable minorities who are not harming children and are just trying to live their lives. Their strange shift on transgender issues is pretty telling, the timing especially.

Linda's avatar

Amen. We already know they don’t care. I don’t have any fucks left to give to these people.

Really, we do need to talk more about this male genital mutilation at birth. I’ve been pissed off for them for ages now…

Claudia's avatar

You mention boys’ mastectomies: Apparently this is the most commonly carried out gender-affirming operation. Translating this into blunt-speak- it’s the removal of man boobs. Boys developing large-ish breasts and want them gone, because they hinder when they play sports. Or because they’re being bullied by others.

For example Epstein, Maxwell, Trump and the Andrew formerly known as Prince.

"𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑡𝑤𝑜 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑏𝑎𝑛 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠 𝑘𝑖𝑑𝑠 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟-𝑠𝑒𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑠"

Will they be completely banned from playing these sports or is trans boys participating in boys sports and trans girls participating in girls sports still acceptable?

"𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏𝑎𝑛 𝑐𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑠 𝑜𝑓 “𝑖𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑖𝑏𝑙𝑒” 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟-𝑎𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑠."

Let's wait 18 years to let the boys decide for themselves if they still want to be irreversibly sexually mutilated with a circumcision (performed without anesthesia).

I haven’t seen any transgender folks in the Epstein files, have you?

These mega “churches” should be audited to hell and TAXED. Sick and tired of their bullshit.

Certainly no drag queens in those files, either.

Apparently there is one transgender victim, but no perps.

This is this scummy world of reactionary— it isn’t conservative— Christian sexual politics that I have been fighting against my whole life. It’s always about Jesus, except it’s a different Jesus than ever existed in the Bible. It’s always about protecting the kids, though it’s not about actually protecting actual kids, gay and trans kids, but some mythical version of kids. It’s using the kids in their never ending political and culture wars.

I noticed that he isn’t putting a measure on the ballot that ends religious privilege when it comes to reporting sexual abuse by pastors. There is no mandatory sentence for pastors who are molesting kids, molesting adults, or distributing child pornography. Because that would be actually addressing a real problem.

As I have written many times over the last 10 years, but over the last five years especially, you can Google sexual abuse for pastors, or priests, or other religious figures, and you will get literally hundreds of thousands of hits. My list of offenders who have been arrested, convicted, or sentence every single year is now up to about 500 of these religious whack jobs.

You can do the same thing for gay people or for transgender people, and you will get a few hits every year, unfortunately. Not hundreds of thousands, but a few.

There is indeed a problem in this country, a spiritual sickness, a danger to all kids, and that is reactionary religion dressed up in its finest Sunday-go-to-meetin’ drag, pretending to be about morals, pretending to be about love, but all it’s really about is hate, fear, money, and power.

Didn't your Jesus make a point of feeding, clothing and housing the poor, Burgen? Did he not feed 5,000 people before they heard him preach? Seems people having enough to eat was important to him.
