So now you know, that "parents' rights" has ALWAYS been about the right to abuse children. The US is the ONLY country in the world that never ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child--because of these Christians. They are pure evil--and they know that traumatizing children is the only way grow their fear- and shame-based disgusting religion.

Weird that these Christian republicans don’t want parents to have the right to say, “no, don’t beat my child,” though.

Reading through this article made me nauseous. Neither teachers nor parents have the right to harm a child. The most ethical stance is to refrain from having children.

Wait wait wait.... so, not allowing parents to allow teachers to hit kids is too "Big Brother" but it's not too "Big Brother" to not allow parents to allow gender affirming care for their kids? It's not too "Big Brother" to take away bodily autonomy from girls & women (reproductive healthcare)?

"Parents' Rights," much like "States' Rights," has always been a phrase that came with a raging dumpster fire's worth of "𝘞𝘈𝘐𝘛 𝘕𝘖 𝘕𝘖𝘛 𝘓𝘐𝘒𝘌 𝘛𝘏𝘈𝘛" attached to it by reactionary conservatives.

“Are we sending a message that we don't love our children?” If you’re proposing a bill to allow teachers to beat them, especially disabled children, yes, that’s the message, are you a fucking idiot?

Troublesh00ter's avatar

What is it with Republican congresspeople that they want to give schools permission to BEAT THEIR KIDS?!? About all I can guess is that their parents beat them, and that somehow justifies continuing a twisted tradition. Add to that, they want to extend that sanction to disabled kids, which goes WAY beyond the pale. Thankfully, as Hemant states, Oklahoma senators from both sides of the aisle weren't having any.

What is disturbing is that such a bill were introduced at all.

Actually, you have it backwards. It is currently legal to spank disabled kids, the bill seeks to change that. "Somehow" the clock has run out on it two sessions in a row before it could be passed in both chambers and (probably) vetoed by Stitt.

The biggest problem is the one Jett exemplifies. They conflate not spanking with not disciplining a child. Their parents spanked them (and most children spanked do turn out to be relatively decent members of society) and it's the only form of discipline they know. They've never been taught the effective discipline strategies that have fewer bad outcomes. So they use what they know and most of the time it "works".

The thing that worries me most about spanking, and the reason I think we should eradicate it, is that there is no consensus on a bright line between discipline and abuse.

Around 2003, I worked part-time in center/school for mentally disabled children. I was not in contact with children, except at lunch. I was usually sitting with the tamer ones, but not this day, due to an educator being sick, I found myself with one especially stubborn and about my height. The same day Brussels sprouts were on the menu (I don't like them either), but the children had to taste a bite (they weren't forced to finish their plates) of everything. So, it took 15 minutes but I managed to make him eat two. How I did that ? I explained him that I didn't like them either but we would eat one bite, followed by some meat or bread, in turn. I didn't know then but the educator on the table behind watched us. After the meal, she came to me and said "Good job keeping your calm".

No beating, no coercion, no threat of punishment and yet, it worked. So, if someone with no patience like me can do it, everyone with a modicum of good sense can too.

The bill is congruent with New Testament teaching. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." "Turn the other cheek." You know, the bible books that Christians are supposed to care about the most. What Jesus said. As opposed to the Old testament.

Why does Jett hate Jesus so, that he would ignore Jesus' teachings in favor of what some Jewish scholar wrote in the 700s BC?

1. Provide better social support services. This should reduce the number of kids acting out and help the ones with issues get the assistance they need.

2. Provide more free healthy school lunches and snacks. At the elementary school level, most bad behavior in children is related to lack of sufficient food or sleep.

3. Double teacher pay, so you get an influx of highly skilled applicants, which in turn leads to people with better classroom management skills running the classrooms.

But...I'm guessing when it comes to discipline, Jett is more of a ""The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line" fan.

2. As well as healthy school breakfasts.

3. Exactly. When I was taking Al Gebra at SPJC, one of my classmates was an education major who was happy she got a C. When asked about that, she replied that since she was going to be a grade school teacher she didn't need Algebra. Yeah, but if she is happy with a C how is she going to motivate her students to get A's and B's? 🙄

Well, it's possible that disabled kid's parents are already beating them. That certainly happened to me. That carried over into school, though the beatings were left to other students. The teachers, admins, etc could pretend it wasn't happening, if anybody brought it up. (They didn't.) Funny how kids who can't see, hear, walk, run, etc are always targets.

I've wondered many times why it is that when discussing spanking, it's acceptable for children as a form of discipline but not adults. Sure, the argument is always that spanking kids is biblical, but it's not like we're using other biblical punishments for adults anymore now is it? Stoning people for crimes isn't making a comeback that I'm aware of, so it would follow that if we're not going to use biblical punishments for adults, then there is no valid reason to purport they're good for children.

Arguing that something is 'biblical' has become the refuge of bullies who like pretending they have the authorization to wield power over others. Find something better to do than support the abuse of children in the name of whichever god you claim to believe in, Jett.

There are still a couple of countries that allow corporal punishment of adults I do believe. Unless things have changed recently, Singapore. I once read a book by some guy who was in Singapore and had engaged in some barroom brawl or other and was offered a prison sentence or lashes. He took lashes, because he had to get back home for some reason. I don't think he necessarily regretted it, but he came close.
