I don't think anyone ever did a better job of demonstrating the disconnect between religion and morality than Mike Johnson. On top of intending to inflict enormous suffering on America's most vulnerable by stripping them of healthcare, Johnson wants to criminalize free speech. This obscene bill isn't about righting any wrong, it's all about cruelty, spreading fear and intimidation.

Linda's avatar

He truly is most wicked. A sadist.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Johnson believes he's Moses. Would that he were just as imaginary.

Joe King's avatar

If I remember the story correctly, Moses was enough of a dick that Yahweh let him lead the people to the promised land, but wouldn't let the old fart in. If Johnson thinks he's Moses, then he should expect to be struck dead just before he can pass the bill declaring Trump to be God-emperor.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

Johnson would think he’s just being a martyr, and expect to be sainted for it.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Moses made sure he wasn't being observed when he murdered an Egyptian and buried his body in the desert. But he still lived in fear that he would be discovered eventually.

Kay-El's avatar

Lol. I’ve actually labeled him Holy Moses Johnson.

Once people become convinced they are operating under divine sanction, they're capable of rationalizing an excuse for just about anything. Johnson is such a person.

John Roberts's avatar

Agreed, Johnson scary with his Christian dogma. Sadly, how and why he got elected tells one a lot about the United States and it's future.

Maltnothops's avatar

You know, i don’t judge people by their appearance. That being said, Mike Johnson looks so much the part of a smug, self-righteous Christian asshole that I begin to wonder if I’m stupid for not judging people by their appearance.

oraxx's avatar

Well, they tend to wear that look like a uniform.

John Roberts's avatar

"suffering on America's" Please be careful with the word "America" and the way the MAGAs use it. IMO most American countries want nothing to do with the MAGA cult.

Thanks

Projection, thy name is MAGA.

The NSGOP uses their persecution narrative to shut down any valid pushback, then creates a tool to do the exact same thing to their "enemies" that bypasses all pushback. No due process, no way to get the non-profit status back. They have not thought this through, they do not understand that this tool can be used against them if there is a Democrat in the White House. Or maybe they do, and are going to prevent elections in 2028.

Die Anyway's avatar

> "...are going to prevent elections in 2028."

It's the only way they stay out of jail.

Joseph Stone's avatar

Yep, I too believe that has been there plan all along. They are not going to allow the Democrats to win again. Trump told people that would be the last election people would have to vote.

Jane in NC's avatar

Kinda hard to take Trump or MAGA seriously on the anti-terrorism BS when Trump is just back from a tour of state sponsors of terrorism and collected bribes everywhere he went, including his giant, new HamasOne airplane. Also, wasn't it Trump and the republicans who just last week threatened to release 'terrorists' [i.e., migrants, documented and undocumented] near the homes of SCOTUS justices who ruled against his rendition policy?

If we're looking for 'enemies of the people', we need look no further than this administration and its elected R flying monkeys.

John Smith's avatar

And they’re redneck supporters. The average redneck is all gung-ho for a fascist/Christian theocracy, until the average redneck is inconvenience or hurt by the fascist/Christian theocracy then we (non-magas) will hear them whine and complain.

People wonder how Germany slide into fascism, no need to look up history. The world is seeing it happen now in real time. We (non-magas) can now recognize the signs of fascism, unlike the people of 1920’s and1930’s Germany. The ideology was new to the German people and to the world at that time (I could be wrong about that, so please correct me, if I am wrong).

Religion mix with politics is the destroyer of humanity. We (non-magas) must fight back as best we can. Let’s make this version of fascism as short and as painless as possible.

Jane in NC's avatar

The thing that christian nationalism has in common with fascism and with other periods in the past, e.g, the Red Scare of the 1950s, the witchcraft hysteria of the 17th century, is that they all had convenient scapegoats that adherents were told to blame for all their problems. Scapegoating succeeds, at least for a while, because it's so much easier for people to blame someone else for their fears and misery than it is to do something about it, like take personal responsibility for your life and actions. The right wing's latest scapegoat is immigrants.

One other thing to note is that it's the right-wing that produces these outbursts of fascism throughout our history.

John Smith's avatar

I would also point out that extreme left also has done evil under communism, and if you go farther left stalinism. Both extremes on either side of the political spectrum has caused much pain and misery for everyone. Humanity must learn moderation and tolerance, and want equality, justice, and prosperity for all. Sometimes I think humans never learn the lessons of the past, and are doomed to repeat them over and over.

Jane in NC's avatar

I never said leftist extremism doesn't exist and hasn't done harm. But that said, more harm has been done by right-wing extremists by far.

John Smith's avatar

I agree the extreme right has done much harm so far. I sorry I wasn’t trying to offend you, I was just pointing that out to others (those who are new to this blog/thread) who might be reading this thread, in case they thought only the extreme right was the only one that does harm. My apologies again!

Jane in NC's avatar

Oh, no worries John. I thought we were just having a good conversation. No need for apologies.

NOGODZ20's avatar

The GOP are doing their level best to violate their oath to support and defend the Constitution (and with the higher-ups, they are to "preserve, protect and defend" that Constitution).

They are, in effect, traitors.

(EDIT to fix many typos)

dammitbarry's avatar

"Constitution" is a dirty word to them.

Troublesh00ter's avatar

There it is, folks. There's Trump, doing his best to squelch opinions he doesn't agree with, right along with more tax breaks for his cronies and undercutting public education. The question becomes: will these buried elements get the attention of someone who cares about these issues and does he have the votes to pass it?

And those are questions I want substantial answers to.

NOGODZ20's avatar

This "one big beautiful bill' reveals that the GOP, who like to label themselves as "pro-life," are most definitely ANTI-life (except for theirs, of course).

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

They are "forced-birthers." They don't give a damn about life they are trying to kill the whole planet.

If it passes, he prepared to have orgs like the Red Cross and Doctors without borders to leave or to be targeted. Say hello to more deaths from preventable diseases.

Continue with the tax cuts, let see who will pay for all their salaries, healthcare and benefits when no one will pay taxes because

1) 99,99% of the population won't have the means to eat everyday.

2) The rest, uber indecent rich, will be dispensed to pay them.

The gop try to combine a feudal society with a hyper capitalist one. It can't work.

Maltnothops's avatar

Your mention of Red Cross has reminded me that I am once again eligible to donate blood. And hence my occasional plea:

About 22 years ago my younger child was diagnosed with Kawasaki Syndrome. Read up on it if you want. The treatment is gamma globulin. One treatment, which pretty much cured my son, is derived from 6000 units of whole blood. Six THOUSAND. It took me a while to get going but I have donated 55 units since then. Only 5,945 to go to repay my debt to humanity. If you are eligible to donate blood, please do it. I thank you. my son thanks you. Humanity thanks you,

I’m O-positive and after some experiments, I found that “power Reds” were the easiest thing for me. A power red is the equivalent of 2 units of whole blood. I donate every 16 weeks. And I’m not lying on my bed for hours afterwards.* YMMV. A friend of mine tried Power reds and it laid him low for days. Me, a single unit of whole blood is terrible but a double unit of power red is no problem.

*I used to lie on the table at Red Cross for hours. They finally told me to stop coming back. Then I discovered Power Red. After I retire I’m going to look into donating plasma.

Black Hole and DM mourner's avatar

A few months ago, I had to go to a lab to have my blood taken. It took them one hour and three nurses to find a vein (they are "slippery") and manage to take enough blood. Add my phobia, I stayed nearly 30 minutes more until my legs got strong enough to be able to come home.

I am O negative. If I could donate, I would do it.

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

Are we sure there’s no measures hidden away in this “big beautiful bill” that gives Trump power for life or the ability to pass his position to his kids or you know the shit Hitler did?

This whole bill is terrifying. From the cuts to essential services to attacks on ideological enemies of the administration, to direct attacks on liberties and rights of all citizens, this bill is the last part of what’s left of our democracy. This bill will end everything that supports the levers of our democracy, leaving only a hollow shell of legitimacy to our representative democracy. Once the republican politicians hesitating on it because they’re vulnerable in the midterms realize this bill will eliminate their threats, we’re all cooked.

Whitney's avatar

So it's been a tough couple of days for me, I hope everyone else is doing better than I am just now.

While I'm very much pleased to see this section was removed from the bill, I'm still very worried. These MAGA supporters aren't going to stop just because they failed here, they'll come back over and over until they're either unable to keep going. Because their version of reality is 'my way is the right way, because Jesus agrees with me' these folks have zero ability to change their path, no matter how ruinous or wrong. They are fully invested and narcissistic enough that they simply cannot conceive of being anything but right.

Rest assured, we will see a bill very much like this again. And again. And again, until it gets passed or a Democrat is elected president. The real question is what are we going to do about these people, because it's not like we can drop them into SpaceX rockets and leave them on the moon.
