Maybe Rev. Sanders should take a look at her state's rankings (44th Overall and 47th in Healthcare) and ask her Jesus why Arkansass is doing so poorly in those areas.

Huckabee-Sanders would likely go out of her tiny little mind at the mere suggestion a religious holiday other than her own be honored by government.

Huckabee-Sanders got elected on name recognition and precious little else. By all appearances she has lived in the fundamentalist bubble from birth. A few things worth pointing out. There is no definitive evidence Jesus ever even existed. No one knows who wrote the gospels, and there are no original copies of them. Although things are attributed to Jesus no one has any idea what he actually said, because he didn't write anything down. We know a lot about the Romans because they DID write things down. The Romans were pretty good map-makers by the standards of their age, and the town of Bethlehem doesn't appear on any of them. There is no record of the Romans ever having conducted a census that required people to return to their place of birth, because what would be the point. When I see the kind of condescending smugness coming from Huckabee-Sanders I'm left with little doubt as to how the world got this screwed up.

Egypt did it, but only with people who worked in another part of the country that the one they were registered for taxes : sailors, merchants... And with the Nile, it was easy to cross the country in a few days, which wasn't possible in the Roman empire.

However, never fear there are many ways to calm a crying baby and to find redemption.

Why is her letter written as though Arkansas had never actually celebrated Christmas until she decided to WHEREAS all over the place? Did she single-handedly invent Christmas? What the hell is that all about?

December 26th? Why, I do believe that's Boxing Day. The day AFTER xmas. A day where the needy receive gifts.

Perhaps Sanders should be part of the spirit THAT day and give give give to her state.

I have tomorrow and Thursday off but I work Friday. I’m sure she’s giving them Friday off so they can have a long weekend rather than having to go back one day then have a weekend. Not that I actually attribute any kindness to her specifically, just some pragmatic thinking.

I wish I had Friday off too, I would go visit my mom, but I didn’t put in for it early enough and I was beat to the punch by three other people. So, since part of my job is to cover for those who are out of office, I will be doing three other people’s jobs that day, and they all have very different jobs. I expect it to be very slow, orders-wise, and I won’t be doing invoicing, so I won’t actually be too busy. Still would have been nice to spend Christmas with my dying mother. But with the play and other activities, I wasn’t able to manage my time all that well this month.

I honestly don't know if Sarah Huckabee Sanders is unaware of the State / Church violations she is committing, or if she's simply clueless. Her response to the FFRF suggests a bit of both, but this can't be the first time she's run afoul of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

Sadly, I suspect that more money has to be wasted in court to demonstrate her error to her in no uncertain terms, before she'll get the hint.

David V. Miller's avatar

Churchlings like her are purposely obtuse. You can "teach them" lessons but they're unteacheable. No matter how many financial penalties a court may impose they won't learn. BECAUSE it's someone else's money they use to pay the court penalties. Churche$ use the congregation's & congregant's.money. Hucksterby uses state funds. When courts personally put the penalties onto the obtuse churchling individual itself, then perhaps maybe possibly they might learn. Maybe.

This is why I will insist that offenders like Huckabee need to be hit PERSONALLY, in their own wallets. Do that and all manner of State / Church offenses would likely all but vanish.

“The @FFRF took issue with me closing state offices to celebrate Christmas…”

No, the FFRF didn’t take issue with you for closing state offices for the holiday. The FFRF took issue with you proclaiming the completely religious and highly unlikely story pulled directly from Christianity is the truth. They said as much. No one gives a flying fart about the state employees having a couple days off. They’re pointing out the unconstitutional language you used to announce the time off. They’re telling you that you crossed a line and better get back over to the correct side of it.

One of Trump’s lackeys — it might have been Bessent — “explained” Trump’s math. You see, if you lower the price by 80%, you would have to increase the price by 500% to get it back to the price that it was before. Trump is just approaching the math from the other side.

"she told them that they should use that time with their families “giving thanks for Christ’s birth."

An Atheist, an ex-Muslim and a Pagan have a feast and exchange presents on December 24th*. No religion involved. Winter solstice celebrations, and many other things, predate christianity.

"and three wise men from the East. It presaged his ministry, which was not focused on the wealthy or powerful but rather on the poor, powerless, and meek"

If the wise men existed, they would have been high priests/astrologists, add the gifts of gold, myrrh and incense, and several days or weeks of travel, that doesn't exactly sounds like poor and powerless.

* Or any convenient date. Once, we celebrated it in early January because my sister was sick.

I was raised Catholic. We were taught that somehow (I still can't really explain how) Jesus and his dad are the same guy. He was upset at people breaking his rules and he couldn't just forgive us for breaking his rules, so he became a physical being like us so that we could kill him, which then allowed him to forgive us for breaking his rules.

Wait, what...?
