Obscenely unconstitutional, and naturally it came from a Republican. He's out of his mind if he thinks this law would result in better people. He may be familiar with the Bible, but like far too many of his fellow believers, does not appear to know anything about the history of Christianity. Christianity is the most factionalized religion on the planet, and nothing else even comes close. Attempting to sort out who was, or was not, a TRUE Christian has spilled a river of blood. The Thirty Years War being a prime example of it. Religion and morality do not exclude each other but they are very far from the same thing. I'm beyond sick of the people who keep trying to force their religion into the public schools.

“Obscenely unconstitutional” is their core competency.

It's always the King Jimmy. That shows it's a super conservative movement that wants to interpret the Bible for people. It's why they don't want to use modern versions. I thought they wanted books with sexual immorality in them out of schools. It was never about that.

oraxx's avatar

They seem to think there is also a King James version of the Constitution.

Stephen Brady's avatar

King Jimmy was... ahem... gay...

Ed Buckner's avatar

Some sources dispute that--in favor of considering him bisexual. Just saying.

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Ah whitewashing, it is everywhere.

Take heed, Idaho Christians...

"Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and tortuous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind; and, for my part, I sincerely detest it, as I detest anything that is cruel."

-- Thomas Paine, from "The Age of Reason"

Bensnewlogin's avatar

My friend Sean put it this way 40 years ago: Christianity is the worst thing that ever happened to the human race. And he was studying to be a priest!

XJC's avatar

Paine's Common Sense reads like a biblical hymn. Lots of references to God as an omniscient, merciful deity. Something changed in him by the time he wrote Age of Reason. Was it Reality? It's the kryptonite of Christianity.

oraxx's avatar

I think the never-ending debate over the Bible is the real message contained in the magic book. I cannot accept the notion that the genuine word of god would be debatable. The staggering number of Christian sects should worry believers far more than it does.

Jamie's avatar

Yeah, if their god does such a poor job communicating that Christians spent thousands of years killing each other for believing it the "wrong" way that should suggest that even if that god did exist, he isn't one who should be listened to.

And will get appealed. And appealed. Until it reaches SCOTUS where the Christian Nazionalists will try to get the Usurper, Fratboy, and the Handmaid to join with Uncle Clarence and Sammy to overturn 𝘈𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘷 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘱.

I’m drawing a blank on who the Usurper is and why that’s his name. Not the Chief, I assume.

Gorsuch. Took Merrick Garland's seat.

Of course! Thank you.

The Wells--father and son--have provided a great service with the SAB. Well worth reading and buying. Same for Dub Rankin's masterwork, The Queen Jane's Version.

My guess is they think this will be a chance to push their creeping Domionism in front of the Supremes, but aren't 5 or 6 of them practicing catholics? The ones in the statute are not the one the RCC mandates. A part of the polity in this Country is ascendant - the part which is utterly and totally intolerant of anything which is not white, evangelical christian, man on top - woman on the bottom, straight... They have fought for the last 50 years to get where they are and they are going for the gold ring.

oraxx's avatar

Since it's Idaho, I'm surprised he wasn't pushing the Book of Mormon.

I'll bet the Mormons are wondering the same thing!

The Heritage Foundation is mostly Opus Dei catholics. They are the smart fanatics. The Dominionists are anything but. It is marriage of convenience. They hate each other and believe the others are going to He’ll. Fun times ahead.

Even as a practicing catholic I would be furious if my kids were in an Idaho school.

“ Bible “is the most important book in the world, molds public morality, impacts history, and contains unequaled literary value.”

This is as far detached from reality as the idea that hard-working Haitian immigrants eat other people’s pets, that Trump is God’s chosen one, that billionaires are your friends, or any of the rest of the far right propaganda.

The most important book in the world?2/3 of the world thinks the Christian story is nonsense. So much for the most important book in the world.

Molds public morality? Public morality just voted for Donald Trump. Every single day there is at least one to three or four stories about another child molesting pastor. Not to mention, there is very little in it, especially the magic, myths, and miracles part, that has a thing to do with reality. In short, it’s a bunch of lies.

Impacts history? Oh, yes it did. It justified slavery, misogyny, racism, homophobia, centuries of religious wars, torture, murder, child molestation.

Unequaled literary value? The closest thing of any literary value in it at all is maybe the song of songs, and that is a huge maybe.

In short, all of their arguments for it are lies. So much for molding public reality. But then, public reality believed the lies of Donald Trump

Val Uptuous NotAgain's avatar

There is some truth to the literary value statement, the Bible is credited to being the inspiration for many great works of literature. Not that it makes the Bible good literature, just that it influenced some people, okay a lot of people, in western society. But that is not enough to justify this bill, for sure.

Maltnothops's avatar

Redman wants to use the KJV, does he? I'm betting he hasn't got the slightest clue as to James I's...appetites. Nor how he rewarded his boyfriends.

Redman says the bible "molds public morality" when nothing could be further from the truth. Apparently, he isn't a student of recorded Christian history. "Unequaled literary value?" An omnibus of 66 anonymously authored works that are riddled with endless contradictions, gross factual errors and imaginary people, places and events. It's badly-written fiction in desperate need of an editor.

The bible has NO place in public schools except personal copes by students and faculty that can be read on their own time and not disrupting the education that children are supposed to be receiving.

Maltnothops's avatar

I was listening to an NPR program today called “The Moth”. It’s about storytelling. I don’t go out of my way to listen to it but enjoy it when I stumble onto it. Mostly people talking about some episode in their life. One story today was told by a woman who was on a NYC subway train when some street preacher started yelling about the usual. After enduring him for a while, she broke out into singing “Row, row, row your boat” and gradually the entire subway car of people joined in. Drowning out the asshole.

Nothing is quite so effective at creating more atheists as close study of the Bible, so... y'know what? Fuck it. Have at it, NatCs of Idaho! Force schoolchildren to read that shitty old decrepit book of irrelevant ancient mythology. Hell, make daily Bible readings compulsory for every single person in the state!

You'll put your religion in the ground faster than we 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 could.

Oh to be in school the week you know Ezekiel 23 is, uh, coming up. The anticipation. The adult protests. The school principle making some hamhanded comment. The students vie-ing to be the one who gets to read. The original bill's author backtracking: "oh you liberals. It's fake news! My bill which says sequential and complete in no way said or implied that every verse would be read sequential and complete..."

What makes you think it won't hold up? Plus Couer d'Alene is famous for both Nazis and Libertarians. Neither wants you to have rights.
