Every time Christians destroy a completely inoffensive Satanic display they somehow feel threatened by, they merely reveal their own personal weaknesses and the failings of their religion.

When was the last time anyone heard of a Nativity creche being vandalized/destroyed by atheists or anyone from TST? I can tell you when: NEVER. And if it had happened, hypocritical Christians would've screamed so loud, they could've been heard on the ISS.

No, destruction is a thing for the people touting the Ten Commandments, not for those following the Seven Fundamental Tenets.

You can sum up that whole business in one word: INSECURITY. Believers have to lean on faith, and faith, having no basis in fact, may only be satisfying to those who can utterly convince / fool themselves into believing whole hog. Otherwise, any alternative expression or opinion becomes a threat.

And here we are.

I congratulate The Satanic Temple on not backing down over their right to display an image of their faith in the public square. And I thank the artists of the Concord Area Artist Coalition for Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion for contributing their talents to reinstalling the exhibit. No one should tolerate religious bigotry. We need to push back, HARD, on any infringement of religious rights, especially those of vulnerable, minority religions.

In which case I'd better repost this being as everyone will miss it otherwise possibly.

OT. Just watched a very old episode of have I got news for you while I was on the elliptical. One of the guests was Ian McKellen. He told a story where some pommy politician was trying to introduce a bit of anti-gay legislation so he went round to see him and try to talk him out of it. He realised that the meeting was useless, the guy wasn't listening and wasn't going to listen, but at the end the guy asked him to sign his kid' s autograph book. He signed it "Ian McKellen – fuck it I'm gay."

That's hilarious. He also once said, 'Half of Hollywood is gay.' So, on Hemant's old Patheos Non-religious blog, some of us commented we wish there was a hell, the floor shows would be fabulous and sparkly. Imagine meeting, having a front row seat with all our online P/NR friends to watch the likes of Neil Patrick Harris et al.....for ever....rather than heaven with all the obnoxious fundies we read about on that blog!

I am not a Satanist, but I believe wholeheartedly that the destruction done to the first statue was totally wrong and hateful. If Christianity is going to be given permission to put a display there, Satanists and every other group has the same right.

The prevalence of all these Christian mayors and other town leaders is why I don't trust the statistics that say America is moving away from religion. If religion is truly waning in the U.S., why are these people more numerous than ever? Why are they in so many positions of power?

Christianity is not "weakening" in America, it's getting stronger. They have the Supreme Court, they abolished Roe v. Wade, and soon Christian nationalists will be occupying Cabinet positions. America is more in the grip of religion than ever -- and the rest of us are a minority that is NOT making progress: we are fighting desperately to hang onto the ground we've gained, in the face of a renewed Christian onslaught.

I would bet most U.S citizens don't know when their mayoral election is. They may not even know the name of their mayor. I believe the people are becoming less religious, but a concerted effort that has been ignored because "It can't happen here", has allowed Christian Nationalists to take control of the government. Even as religion means less and less to the average citizen, the perception of "Christian good" has not fallen off nearly as rapidly.

I'm honestly not even sure what jurisdiction's mayor I'd be voting for, since my last move. I'm in one of those "this town has its own name and postal code, but the mail actually goes to this other town in the next postal code, and your taxes go to the other 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 town next door" towns. This country is so bloody weird...

Judging by the wait at the polls for mayoral elections and the turnout listed on the county website, I think very few people in mid to large size towns know their mayor. Small towns where you know the 3 kids in kindergarten despite your kids being in college and you're working construction 30 miles away, yeah you probably know the mayor.

Sorry I missed this one. Was at a concert of The Rock Orchestra ... which was pretty darn good!

How many times do we have to go through this? How many times will Christians lose their minds about something they are convinced threatens them when there has NEVER been any threat expressed by the other party, and how many times will they act out. Frankly, I don't see an end to this kind of behavior, because they cannot stand in the face of an alternative belief, never mind lack of belief.

They are scared little children in adult bodies ... which makes them extraordinarily dangerous.

There is a deeply entrenched expectation of Christian privilege in this country, and Christians never stop trying to mark their territory in the public square, and schools. That overwhelming sense of privilege is, however, very easily threatened and I think it speaks directly to just how weak their belief system really is. Evidently, if they can just force their belief system on everyone it somehow proves they're right. They could help their cause by getting everyone on the same page, but the splintering of Christianity continues apace.
