As offensive as these hate-mongers are, the real problem rests with the people who enable them through their financial contributions.

Franklin is a leftist city? The closest thing to leftist that Franklin gets is driving north 20 miles to Nashville, and Nashville isn't known for leftist ideology. Of course Wilson's gang would think that being antifascist is rejecting the foundations of the country. To them, Hitler wasn't far enough to the right. They seem to truly believe that the US was founded to be explicitly the type of Christian that they are. And they don't want to just rule over everyone, they want to eliminate anyone who does not conform. With Whiskey Pete running the military, they have the resources to do that.

Well, Wilson and his gang of authoritarian goons tell everyone they are blessed with right opinion and are obviously the only ones who can tell everyone else how they have to live their lives. Gilead anyone?

Joe King's avatar

Gilead might be too liberal for some of them.

And for those people, I suspect Gustave Doré is just TOO colorful (and whimsical)....

So basically a store said “we aren’t taking blood money” and NatCs decided to throw a fit. I see

Joe King's avatar

Being told "I disagree with you" is enough to get them to throw a fit.

Unhinged Nazi says:

"The clash you are seeing in the city of Franklin regarding our conference, is a clash of worldviews, good vs evil, light verses darkness, and so forth."

He's not wrong, but he's living in opposite world.

And "and so forth" is almost Pythonesque.

If there is such a thing as "radical Islam" (and there is), then Doug Wilson's brand of Christianity="radical Christianity."

They are afraid of confronting opposing views. They think that people challenging their twisted world view counts as violence against them. At least they acknowledge that words can be violence, they just fail to realize that the violent words are theirs.

Now, I am not a big time famous pastor, but as someone who has read the supposed words of Jesus, I think a Christian response would have been to match, double, or triple the restaurant's donation to feed hungry people and tip the waitstaff double.

But that is, I suppose, asking Doug Wilson and his followers to be entirely different people who are not objectively pieces of shit.

Joe King's avatar

They have excised words like "generosity" and "empathy" from their dictionaries. First you have to get them to understand the concept of basic human decency before you can ask them to become decent human beings.

Tinker's avatar

Worse, they haven't excised empathy, they've declare it a negative trait. These people really are the bad guys and they are reveling in it.

ericc's avatar

They are generous and empathetic to those they consider human beings.... which is maybe 10% of all actual human beings.

Hate-filled cristers trying and failing to play the victim yet again.

Joe King's avatar

Not having their hate as legally mandatory is how they define persecution.

Maltnothops's avatar

“ that abortion is “as great an evil as slavery,” and that slavery was a net positive”

So…..is abortion a net positive as well as a great evil?

Tinker's avatar

They are evil so that tracks.

NOGODZ20's avatar

I read that and thought “Dude, pick a lane and stick with it.”

Joe King's avatar

They have to say slavery was evil until they can re-institute it.

There's a Chik-Fil-A just down the road. They could hold their Christofascist circle jerk there. I'm sure they'd be more than welcome.

NOGODZ20's avatar

Hope they try and hold it on a Sunday.

Joe King's avatar

Someone needs to get a food truck to sell chicken sandwiches on Sundays near the Chik-fil-A parking lot. Should be called Side Chik.

Which statement of concern for safety is founded in reality and the stated intentions of the other side, and which one is founded in persecution fantasies? I think we all know what the answer is.

LGBTQ people want to be left alone to just live their lives like everyone else. Wilson's thugs want to kill LGBTQ people. The safety risk comes from the ones who think their opponents are anti-Christian hate groups.

Tiny (VERY tiny) amount of credit to Rench for using the correct "Democratic Party" label instead of the idiotic "Democrat Party" thing that most conservatives/Republicans use. That's always been a pet peeve of mine.

foofaraw & Chiquita(ARF!)'s avatar

Daniel,

Good eye!

My response when someone says or writes "Democrat party" to show how SMART they are:

"You're standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon, and off in the distant sky, you see a speck. As it gets closer, you realize it's an American Bald Eagle, the symbol of America!

As you grab your partner's arm, do you point to the eagle and say...

1) "Look at that MAJESTIC bald eagle!",

or do you say...

2) "Look at that MAJESTY bald eagle!"

Apparently, MAGA and the GOP gravitate toward #2. (Not a surprise. Especially with Diaper Don leading the pack.)

I'm okay with the foundry honoring the booking. I very much like the restaurant's response over any denial of service. Legal or illegal, I think it is more of an American value to have for-profit businesses act as open fora and let them speak - while objecting to their message - rather than prevent them from speaking.

I respect Ms. Fullerton's choice, but I wish she had chosen to show her work there. I wish she had shown up in person, with loads of her supporters, critics, and just random art fans, because I wish for such people to regularly interact with these bigoted jerks. Isolation is the way cults maintain their strange views; interaction with the outside world tends to destroy such insular beliefs.

Wilson claims that Hindus, Muslims and even liberal Christians shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Tough noogies for him that there is no religious test for public office in this country's Constitution.

No, but there ought to be an intelligence test as well as a civics exam. (Sorry; off topic, I know.)

Sam Harris interviewed Doug Wilson a few months back. It was one of the most disturbing things I've ever heard. He nonchalantly talks about his goal for a Theocracy that is basically on par with the Taliban. Gotta appreciate that he's sticking to the Bible though. At least he's honest about his (utterly maniacal) beliefs.
