Ummm ... guys? You've ALREADY DONE THAT! Your buddies at The Dillon Community Church have had a sweet deal with the city of Dillon for HOW LONG NOW? And for whatever reason, you don't want to make the amphitheater available to any other organization? I have to ask: just WHAT is going on between the city of Dillon and that church that they get exclusive access?!?

To borrow from Desi Arnaz, you got some 'splainin' to do!

I wouldn't bet on it. The one time I remember Ricky letting Lucy into the band as a saxophone soloist was nothing short of disastrous! 😏

Lucy's default state was disaster.

Hemant's last sentence "If they’re wise, they’ll listen to the advice their attorney gave them before she walked away." might be too optimistic. I will be surprised if they listen to the attorney. Because christian privilege.

Expand full comment

Okay, so who's willing to bet on what they'll do? And since the bets on this will probably be very one-sided, all I can say is: Yawn. Yet another example of "discriminatory rules for thee, religious freedom for mee".

In all seriousness, though. I'd love to find out how many are in both the church and the council. Would make for a nice article.

Prolly 5 or 7 board so 4 or 6 in that church.

Three guesses which church Christiansen attends, and the first two don't count. He pretty much admits that he wanted the lawyer to draft a policy that allows that one particular church exclusivity. This isn't just Christian Fucking Privilege. This is privilege for only one specific sort of Christian, which is the ultimate goal for some of these Nat Cs.

It has gotten to the point that putting 'wise' in a discussion about religious behavior is an oxymoron. All anyone has to do is tell them they cannot do something (continue a sweetheart deal, here) and they circle the wagons, scream bloody murder, and announce they are being persecuted. I think we can just bet they are hoping for a rethuglican sweep in November so they can eliminate separation of church and state. Gilead is not far behind.

It’s OK if these religious extremists want to believe in their nonexistent God, but they need to pay for it and do it on their own time, in their own building, and with their own money.

They should never be allowed to take advantage of a public space [especially] if they’re the only ones that are allowed to use it. It’s a textbook example of a violation of the First Amendment’s establishment clause.

Somebody needs to apply to rent the amphitheater for a drag show that invites patrons to bring food to be donated to the local food bank. And then when they decline sue the crap out of them.

Expand full comment

How about renting the church building for the drag show? The church ain't using it.

Expand full comment

Uh, because that makes no sense in the context of what's being discussed?

Expand full comment

It doesn't? The church is illegally using the town's amphitheater. I suggested renting the church out for a drag show since that would annoy the members of the church. It doesn't bring up the possibility of suing the church, true, but it will still annoy the tight-assed little Christstains, won't it?

You do understand that the issue is the amphitheater is publicly owned and that the church is not, right? πŸ™„

I like that idea. It doesn't even have to really happen to set off that lot. Just the very Idea of it would be enough. Picture it: a bunch of drag queens showing up at the church office and making inquiries about renting the sanctuary :D It would give them a brain bleed!

You hire experts for a reason. And the idiot who said she wasn't solution oriented doesn't understand that what he wants is NOT LEGAL and there is no way around that (at least until it gets to SCOTUS). Ms. Kelly deserves an award for her ability to remain professional in the face of the idiocy the Dillon council is pursuing in this case. Why anyone hires an attorney the turns around and refuses to listen to their advice is completely beyond me.

The real issue here appears to be the idea that everyone should be playing fairly; if the church gets to use the amphitheater then other outside groups should also have that opportunity. Christian privilege apparently can't handle that, Christians sure seem to not like sharing their toys with others and actively resist doing so. Shooting the messenger (Ms. Kelly) was quite possibly the worst way to handle the issue the council could have selected considering it's A.) ineffective and B.) childish. If this ever does come to a lawsuit, losing is likely to cost a good bit more because the council very well knew what it was doing wasn't legal.
