Of the 50 states, 28 allow for the determination of tied elections by drawing lots or similar random methods.
This practice, while seemingly archaic, is a recognized method for resolving election ties in many states. Other methods used by different states include:
• Considering a tie as a lack of winner, requiring a new election (12 states)
• Having the winner selected by the governor or state board of elections (Montana, Tennessee, West Virginia)
• A joint vote of the state legislature (Nevada and New Hampshire)
If God wants to speak to me, he can show up anytime he wants and do so. In the meantime, I have no use what so ever for those claiming to speak on his behalf. It isn't as if they speak with anything approaching a consistent voice, and what God wants always aligns with what the person doing the talking wants.
From a freaking COIN FLIP? This is up there with some pastor claiming that Yahweh helped him find his car keys, except that it goes way past that. The preaching from the mayor's office that Burns has done to this point is reprehensible. One would hope that those censure and no-confidence votes against him would be a wake-up call, but apparently not.
This makes me wonder if the people of Monroe have the cojones to organize a RECALL ELECTION ... because Burns' action to date sure as hell warrant it.
Until we get rid of money, corruption, the electoral college, gerrymandering , & the whacko-doodles in politics some people will stay away from voting because they will feel it’s fixed & it is!
The Supreme’ Court screwed our elections the minute they allowed big money into the elections. That was one of the biggest messes THEY created!
Bet if we go back & look at that ruling it was done by the conservatives who will do anything to win…lie, cheat, steal or throw money at it!
In other words, the Christian way….before we can fix anything in our politics, we must get rid of Citizens United, re-instate the Fairness Doctrine & get rid of the 6 justices that have been bought & paid for by the White Christian Nationalists!
You are correct to a point, the issue with conservatives, is they almost always have to throw in their religious nonsense. They need to leave that in their churches. Religion is a private ordeal…and that goes for all religious beliefs. It’s none of my business how one wishes to view the hereafter.
Let’s focus on how we are going to live as ONE race, the human race. Religion always gets in the way & mucks things up.
White Christian Nationalists & the Heritage Foundation all believe that the country has to believe what they believe…to begin with they’re all controlling lunatics!
The conservative have a long way to go…they have a lot of baggage to drop off. Their belief system is one of control & it mostly comes from billionaires wanting to control the poor, & the marginalized population; that’s not going to fly in a democratic society.
They will need to completely shed their thought process. I just don’t see it happening at least until we’ve had a huge shift in this country! The old men in control need to let go…we must have DEI in our government above all else! Until we have a diverse government our country will continue to have this push & pull. We must also revamp our educational system completely. We must teach so that critical thinking is key…stop memorizing dates in history…teach so students question why something happened & how to make positive changes. Get religion out of schools, no private schools should be allowed…instead bring up the standards of teaching, make education THE top priority! Put money in education instead of building more machinery of war & destruction! Care about our environment…the future of earth & humanity!
He did indeed, and that's what scares me. It tells me that, in the long haul, conservatives (or at least those of the stripe Frum refers to) care for POWER far more than they care about democracy or service to the people. And now, they have become so perverse and wanton that they will side with anyone who (they think) will give them that power.
And the more I write stuff like this, the more disturbed I get. [sigh]
So barely over 5% of their population voted and this guy got 2.5% of the vote... The Australians had to make voting mandatory. I think we are overdue for that solution. Except Americans can't stand to be told to do something and cannot stand to vote for someone they have not either fallen in love with or that their tribe has.
Mandatory voting is in my neck of the woods and political conservatives hate it. Like national health care they would like to see the back of it because it's the norm in people's thinking.
Nothing scares them more than the possibility of people experiencing the benefits of collective social policies and public services 🙄
Arizona, where I live, has been pushing some shenanigans when it comes to federally acceptable ID - they don't want to have to pay for the equipment, time, manpower and other resources for RealID, so the most I could get was a Travel ID, and if I were going somewhere internationally, I'd still need a passport. The system is currently so badly set up that I took four rounds - two online and two into a physical building - to get said Travel ID. I did this to help ensure that, if it came to it, I would be able to vote in future elections. The process was annoying, frustrating, difficult, and painful for me since I have trouble walking.
When people whine about not wanting to vote, I honestly just don't have any sympathy to offer them. Yes, I'm familiar with the argument that claims not voting is an expression of the nonvoter's preferences, but I honestly feel there are better ways of expressing that. Not voting does not communicate clearly that the nonvoter hates the system; more likely it communicates apathy. If more people got up and voted, we might not be dealing with any number of political issues we see today; and I don't see refusal to vote as relieving one of any responsibility anyhow.
In the run up to the Canadian election, I posted exhortations to go and vote pretty much everywhere where I thought a Canadian might see it. I never actually said who to vote for, just to go & vote: Voting is important!
The handful of people in Monroe, NC who voted were stupid enough to vote for this POS, leading to a coin flip decision. They sure aren't smart enough or care enough to vote him out. They're like the people of Rock Ridge in Blazing Saddles: "You know, morons."
Burns calls his critics "snowflake complainers." Projection. That description fits xtians to a T.
And drag queens are "sexualizing our children in Monroe?" Um, no. That doesn't happen, Burns. It's as big a fantasy as your god. It's Christian clergy that sexualize chidren time after time after time.

There's a lot to unpack here, but today I think I'll limit myself to one specific issue that seems to be coming up more and more often: Christians failing to reign in the worst of their membership.
Sure, an argument could be made that Mayor Robert Burns is a lousy Christian and not representative of the group as a whole, but for that to be reasonable, some form of correction from the group would be needed. The reality is that Christian groups (churches, organizations, etc.) simply do not wholesale enforce good behavior from their membership unless, of course, some sort of adult intimacy is involved. Then, and only then, they're very interested in what may or may not be happening and between whom whatever shenanigans occur. Even in the one case they care about, Christians as a whole seem to be more interested in insuring blame is correctly assigned to someone they consider unimportant than anything else.
Mayor Burns clearly represents Christianity as it is, not the way some would have the rest of us think of it being. The only folks being fooled are the ones who haven't escaped the bubble as of yet.
You make an excellent point. Ordinary Christians who are not as extreme as Burns and his like seem to fail repeatedly at calling the extremists out on their extremism. The extremists may be faulted for the madness they promote, but the supposed normals should also be faulted for their failure to speak out.
I thought that was when they claimed they're "forgiven" because they asked their imaginary friend for forgiveness..... nevermind that they generally don't ask those they've transgressed for forgiveness, as long as Invisible Bob or whatever its name is says all is well.
They can be forgiven by their god all they want. If they violate the law, they deserve to be arrested and tried for their transgressions. If they violate societal sensibilities or norms, this is why we have civil courts.
All the virtue signaling tells me he has lots of skeletons in his closet. The ones most given to preachiness and proselytizing are the ones that usually have the most to hide.

"Abortion mills push women in crisis through the process, even when in tears, never telling them about post-abortion trauma."
DM's grandmother was so traumatized by her 8 abortions, she talked about it positevely to all her daughters and granddaughters until it was legalized. I won't deny there are women traumatized, but it's usually women who wanted to have this child.

Not complaining, mind you, but why don't the other links do this?
OK, now I’ve forgotten what the topic of this item is. Christians (and/or their leaders) are so repetitive. It’s almost like you can take the headline (and most of the text) and just re-use it repeatedly.
Religious extremists of all stripes tend to see their religion as the answer to every question. This mentality is reinforced when they become convinced they're operating under divine sanction. More than anything, they will claim anything they see as a threat to their expectation of privilege as persecution, and they're very good at playing the victim.
I live in Monroe. This is a great article other than you left out the part where he betrayed the citizens of Monroe and city council by sneaking Monroe onto the HB3 bill. We are the only municipalities in Union County that will have their election in 2026 and now it will be a partisan election breaking a 60+ year old charter. He gets to be mayor for another year. His betrayal and not letting the citizens vote on it is the final act that brought about the No Confidence vote! Hoping more people will vote him out in 2026, but they have to come out and vote!
"So we have achieved a final result that the probability of a coin roughly the shape of a Canadian quarter, in Earth-like conditions, has a probability of landing on its edge of 00011113%."
A coin toss. That's how they decide things in the bible belt? *smdh*
If "it's all in God's hands," then why does God need flunkies to push their religion on everyone down here on earth?
Had the coin fell on the other side, he would have howled "persecution and cheating".
Nah, they’d use their special two-head coin for this rigged toss.
We know this because of his language when talking about it. He said he was "forced" to accept the coin toss.
Exactly.
Wait, another stolen election?
Because God's a busy Man. He's making bets with Satan on the outcome of the NBA and NHL playoffs. Ask any champion athlete...he's the "Big Bookie in the Sky."
God had the Celtics winning the Eastern Conference. He got pissed when they lost.
Yeah, He is often wrong on sporting event outcomes.
And election betting.
God was Trump's number 2 supporter right behind Elon Musk.
While sitting at a Blackjack table, I heard a voice tell me to take another card. I'm glad I didn't - it was a No Limit table.
Why doth god keep smiting my Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs?
OKC has more megachurches?
Don't you know that the NBA gods are polytheistic?

I think they draw lots. You know, they pick one of Lot's daughters. Maybe sons.
From the Interwebs (a series of tubes):
Of the 50 states, 28 allow for the determination of tied elections by drawing lots or similar random methods.
This practice, while seemingly archaic, is a recognized method for resolving election ties in many states. Other methods used by different states include:
• Considering a tie as a lack of winner, requiring a new election (12 states)

Not that small. I just Googled Monroe, NC. Current population of 37,797, and yet only 1940 people voted for mayor?
This is a goodly part of the reason why our democracy is in its current shape.
